Chapter 6 - THE FINAL ACCOUNTING

Ryan looked like an escaped lunatic. His designer clothes were filthy and torn, his face was bruised and gaunt, and his hair was matted with sweat and dirt. The stench of stale alcohol and sheer desperation rolled off him in waves.
"Maddie!" he screamed over the blaring siren, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. "Did you think you could steal my life?! Did you think you could give my baby to this bastard?!"
"Drop the weapon, Ryan," Damian said, his voice eerily calm, his gun leveled directly at Ryan’s forehead. He didn't flinch, standing as an unyielding human shield between the gunmen and where I stood pressed against the wall.
"You ruined me, Vance!" Ryan shrieked, waving his pistol erratically. The two hired mercenaries beside him kept their weapons trained on Damian, waiting for a clear command. "The syndicate gave me twelve hours to pay or they kill me! You bought my notes! You bought my life! But I checked the policy—if Maddie dies tonight, the payout covers my debt with twenty million left over! And if I take you out, nobody’s left to challenge it!"
"Ryan, look at yourself!" I cried out from behind Damian, my voice shaking with disgust and horror. "You're willing to kill your own unborn child for money?!"
Ryan’s eyes flickered with a brief, terrifying madness. "If it's not my heir on my terms, it shouldn't exist at all! You made me look like a fool in front of the entire world! You held that secret back just to destroy me!"
"You destroyed yourself, Sterling," Damian spoke, his voice cutting through the smoke like a diamond blade. "You hired Petrov's men with stolen credit. Did you really think an organization like that wouldn't clear their ledger with the man who actually owns the city?"
Ryan blinked, momentarily confused. "What... what are you talking about?"
Damian didn't lower his gun. Instead, he whistled once—sharp and piercing.
From the shattered doorway behind Ryan, three laser sights suddenly appeared, painting bright crimson dots over the chests of the two mercenaries flanking Ryan.
The mercenaries instantly stiffened. Without a single word of loyalty to Ryan, both hired guns slowly raised their hands, dropped their weapons to the floor, and backed into the corridor.
"What are you doing?!" Ryan shrieked, spinning around in terror. "I'm paying you! Shoot him!"
"They work for whoever signs the sovereign bond, Ryan," Damian said, taking a slow, menacing step forward. "I cleared Petrov's entire portfolio at four o'clock this afternoon. You didn't lead an assault team into my penthouse. You walked yourself into a federal execution chamber."
Panic finally overtook the madness in Ryan's eyes. Knowing he was cornered, he swung his pistol back toward Damian, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Then we all burn together!"
BANG!
A gunshot deafened the room.
I screamed, closing my eyes and wrapping both arms tightly around my stomach.
When I forced my eyes open, Damian was still standing, untouched, smoke curling from the barrel of his weapon.
Ryan was slumped on his knees on the marble floor, screaming in agony, clutching his right shoulder where a single, precisely placed bullet had shattered his collarbone. His gun had skittered across the floor, coming to rest at Damian's polished shoes.
Heavy footsteps swarmed the library as Damian's elite security team, backed by federal marshals in tactical vests, flooded the room, securing the perimeter and pinning Ryan to the floor.
"Ryan Sterling," a marshal announced, his knee pressed firmly between Ryan's shoulder blades as handcuffs clicked shut. "You are under arrest for attempted capital murder, corporate fraud, conspiracy to commit insurance homicide, and unlawful weapons trafficking."
Ryan sobbed into the carpet, his blood pooling beneath him. As they hauled him to his feet, he looked at me one last time—broken, ruined, stripped of his wealth, his name, and his freedom.
"Maddie..." he wept, a pathetic, broken shell of a man. "Please... I'm the father..."
"You are nothing to this child," I said, my voice steady, cold, and final. "And you will spend the rest of your life in a cage remembering that you traded your entire world for your own hollow ego."
They dragged him out into the darkness, his frantic cries fading down the concrete stairwell until the penthouse fell into absolute silence.
Damian immediately engaged the safety on his gun, holstered it, and turned to me. The terrifying predator vanished, replaced in an instant by a man trembling with frantic concern.
"Madeline," his hands were on my shoulders, gently checking me, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "Are you hurt? Did anything hit you? The baby—"
"We're okay," I breathed, looking up into his storm-gray eyes. "We're safe, Damian. You saved us."
His defenses shattered. Damian pulled me against his chest, wrapping his arms around me with a fierce, desperate tenderness. I buried my face into the crook of his neck, feeling the thunderous beat of his heart against my cheek. For the first time in eleven years, I felt an unshakable, total peace.

"I will spend the rest of my life making sure nothing ever hurts you again," he whispered against my hair.
And for the first time, I believed every word.
