Chapter 3 - THE GOLDEN REIGN

The luxury penthouse atop Vance Tower was an impenetrable fortress of Italian marble, floor-to-ceiling panoramic glass, and complete silence. For three days, I existed in a strange sanctuary. World-class obstetricians arrived with portable ultrasound equipment, checking the fragile little flicker of my baby's heartbeat. Every nutrient-dense meal was curated; every ounce of stress was rigorously guarded against by a small army of staff who treated me with an absolute deference I had never experienced in eleven years of marital servitude.
Damian Vance was rarely there during the daylight hours, but when he returned, his presence filled every corner of the immense penthouse. He didn't hover; he observed. He watched me with sharp, calculating eyes that seemed to strip away every defense I had spent a decade building.
On the afternoon before the Metropolitan Gala, three tailors and an internationally acclaimed stylist entered the suite, carrying garment bags that bore the insignia of Paris ateliers.
"He wants you in emerald," the lead stylist murmured, unzipping the main bag. "Mr. Vance insisted. He said your ex-husband always preferred you in modest, washed-out pastels so you would fade into the background."
I stood before the tri-fold mirror as they zipped me into the gown. It was an emerald silk masterpiece, cascading like liquid jewel down my figure. The fabric skimmed gently over my still-flat belly, while the cut across the collarbone exuded a regal, untouchable power. For eleven years, Ryan’s mother had chosen my clothes, insisting that high-society wives should look invisible, modest, and subservient.
Looking in the glass now, I didn't see the broken woman who had wept on a rain-slicked curb.
I looked like a queen preparing for war.
The double doors of the dressing suite clicked open, and the stylists scrambled back in reverent silence. Damian stood in the doorway, dressed in a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo that accentuated his broad shoulders and formidable frame. For a fraction of a second, his guarded expression cracked. His eyes darkened, drinking in every inch of me with a raw, predatory intensity that made my pulse spike.
"The jewelry," Damian instructed quietly, snapping his fingers.
An assistant stepped forward with a mahogany box. Inside lay a breathtaking necklace—a cascading constellation of flawless diamonds framing an immense, sixty-carat Colombian emerald that caught the light like trapped fire.
"That's the Carlisle Emerald," I gasped, stepping back. "It was sold at auction in Geneva three years ago for forty million dollars."
"I bought it," Damian replied casually, taking the heavy necklace from the velvet cushion. He walked toward me, his footsteps silent on the rug. "Turn around."
My breath hitched as his warm fingers brushed against the sensitive skin of the back of my neck, sweeping my hair to one side. The cold weight of the stones settled against my chest, but the heat radiating from Damian’s hands made the hair on my arms stand up. His fingers lingered for a second longer than strictly necessary near the nape of my neck before he stepped back.
"Ryan has spent the last forty-eight hours bragging to every major financial outlet that he has finalized the Sterling succession," Damian told my reflection in the mirror, standing towering behind me. "He brought Chloe to the gala tonight to introduce her as the future mother of his heir. He intends to announce their engagement the moment your divorce is processed."
"He doesn't know you took me in?"
"Ryan is an arrogant fool who cannot see beyond the hood of his own ego," Damian whispered, his eyes meeting mine in the glass. "He thinks you are hiding in an airport motel, crying your eyes out over signed paperwork. He has no idea who has been keeping you warm."
A thrilling, dangerous fire ignited deep inside my chest. "Let's make sure he finds out."
The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza was blinding with crystal chandeliers, flashing paparazzi bulbs, and the clinking of vintage champagne glasses when our motorcade pulled up. High society had turned out in full force.
When the double doors of the ballroom parted to announce the arrival of Damian Vance, an immediate hush rolled across the grand floor. The titan never attended social galas. He detested them.
He entered with his chin held high, radiating absolute dominance—and his arm was wrapped firmly around my waist.
Gasps rippled through the sea of socialites. Champagne glasses paused halfway to lips.
Across the ballroom, standing beside a lavish buffet table surrounded by admiring junior executives, Ryan Sterling was laughing with Chloe clinging tightly to his arm, looking visibly pregnant in a tight pink gown. Ryan’s mother, Eleanor Sterling, was nearby, basking in the attention of her bridge club.
Ryan glanced casually toward the entrance, the smirk still plastered on his handsome face.
Then he saw me.
The color drained entirely from Ryan's skin until he looked like a corpse. His champagne glass slipped from his fingers, hitting the polished parquet floor with a violent crash that shattered the ballroom's hushed silence.
Chloe gasped, clutching his arm. "Ryan? What is she doing here? Why is she with—"
"Madeline?" Eleanor's shrill voice cut through the stunned air as she pushed through the crowd, her face twisted in utter disbelief and rage. "What is the meaning of this obscene display? How dare you show your face here!"
Damian didn't break stride. He guided me smoothly down the marble stairs, leading me straight into the heart of the crowd until we were standing barely five feet from my husband.
Ryan was trembling, his eyes bulging as they locked onto the Carlisle Emerald blazoning around my neck, then onto Damian's hand, which rested possessively on the curve of my waist.
"Maddie..." Ryan choked out, his voice cracking with humiliation. "What... who gave you that dress? Why are you with Vance?"
"She is with me because you threw away the only valuable thing your pathetic bloodline ever possessed," Damian answered before I could speak, his voice cutting across the entire ballroom with chilling clarity. "And because unlike you, Sterling, I know how to treasure absolute perfection."
Eleanor shoved her way to the front, trembling with fury, pointing a jeweled finger at me. "You insolent little tramp! You think wearing a borrowed necklace changes what you are? You're a barren, worthless parasite who couldn't give my son a family! We threw you out like the garbage you are, and you run straight to our enemy!"
The ballroom held its breath.
Chloe sneered, stepping forward to press her baby bump against Ryan’s side. "It's pathetic, Madeline. Did you sleep with him just to get an invitation? You'll never be what I am to Ryan. I’m giving him what you couldn't in eleven miserable years."
I looked at the three of them—the man who had sworn to love me and discarded me like an old shoe, the mother-in-law who had tormented me for over a decade, and the woman who had stolen my life without an ounce of shame.
I felt no pain. I felt only pure, absolute disdain.
I reached up, calmly placed my hand over Damian's hand resting on my waist, and looked Ryan dead in the eyes.
"You're right, Chloe," I spoke clearly, my voice projecting through the dead silence of the hall. "I spent eleven years taking the blame for our empty nursery. But you see, I went to the doctor on the morning Ryan put my bags on the porch."
Ryan's eyes widened in sudden, creeping terror. "What are you talking about?"
"I'm eight weeks pregnant, Ryan," I said with a razor-sharp smile.
A collective gasp exploded across the room.
Ryan staggered back as if I had shot him in the chest. "You're... what? No. That's impossible! You're barren!"
"No, Ryan," I said coldly. "I'm carrying a healthy baby. The legal, rightful heir to the Sterling patriarch trust. But unfortunately for you... you signed the abandonment affidavit two days ago."
Before Ryan could scream, a server rushed through the crowd, pale-faced, and handed Damian a tablet. Damian glanced down at the screen, and the cold smirk on his face deepened into pure malice.

Damian looked up at Chloe, then back at Ryan.
"Oh, it gets much better, Sterling," Damian announced, turning the tablet toward Ryan. "Because while Madeline is indeed carrying your biological heir... the medical records my team just intercepted from the private clinic in Miami prove that the child Chloe is carrying belongs to your personal driver."
