Chapter 5 - CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE

By dawn, Blackwood Estate was crawling with elite private security and federal forensic investigators. The mercenaries had vanished into the night, but they had left behind a crucial piece of encrypted hardware: a military-grade burner comms unit.
In the secure communications bunker beneath Blackwood Tower, Ronan's cybersecurity chief cracked the transceiver's encryption key.
"The payment was wired from an offshore shell called 'V-H Real Estate Holdings,'" the tech reported.
"Vivian," Ivy said, standing beside Ronan. "She’s reckless enough to put her own initials on an offshore transaction."
"Julian Hail is keeping her isolated, but she's using her personal trust fund to hire freelancers," Ronan analyzed coldly. "She believes if she eliminates the physical patents and silences Ivy, Blackwood Capital will withdraw the takeover bid."
"Mr. Blackwood," Malcolm entered, carrying a formal gold-embossed envelope. "An invitation just arrived by hand. The annual Metropol Financial Gala is tonight at the Grand Hyatt. Julian Hail is the keynote speaker, celebrating Hail Conglomerate's fiftieth anniversary."
"He thinks he’s untouchable because the entire business council will be in attendance," Ronan murmured, a calculating look forming in his eyes. He turned toward Ivy. "Are you ready to face them, Ivy? Not as an employee. Not in the background. But as the rightful owner of the Lancaster legacy, by my side?"
Ivy looked down at her hands—hands that had scrubbed floors to pay off debts, hands that had cared for the forgotten. She raised her chin, her green eyes blazing with quiet fire.
"I spent years hiding in the shadows because I thought poverty made my voice worthless," Ivy said. "I am ready."
That evening, the Grand Hyatt ballroom was a sea of black ties, haute couture, and blinding paparazzi flashbulbs. Julian Hail stood on the elevated stage, a silver-haired patriarch with an arrogant grin, while Vivian stood beside him in a glittering emerald gown, drinking champagne as if she had already won.
"Hail Conglomerate represents the gold standard of American innovation!" Julian boomed into the microphone.
The heavy mahogany doors at the back of the grand ballroom swung wide open.
A collective gasp rippled across the room of eight hundred elite guests.
Ronan Blackwood walked in, immaculate in a custom midnight-blue tuxedo. But all eyes were instantly drawn to the woman on his arm.
Ivy Lancaster looked breathtaking. She wore an elegant, sapphire-silk gown that draped like water over her graceful frame. Her hair was swept up, revealing her delicate neck, unadorned by ostentatious jewelry except for a simple, antique platinum locket that had belonged to her mother. She walked with an effortless, regal grace that silenced every whispered rumor in the hall.
Vivian’s champagne flute slipped from her fingers, shattering against the marble floor.
"What is the meaning of this?" Julian Hail roared through the microphone, his face flushing crimson. "Security! Escort this woman and her escort out!"

"Don't bother, Julian," Ronan's voice rang through the auditorium without amplification, carrying an authority that paralyzed the approaching security guards. "The Federal Securities and Trade Commission is already in the building."
