Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW OF RETALIATION

The morning sun filtered through the floor-to-ceiling glass of the Blackwood Foundation’s downtown headquarters, casting geometric bands of gold across Ivy Lancaster’s walnut desk. Three months had passed since the gala that changed her life, but the quiet rhythm of work was suddenly shattered by the sharp click of leather heels outside her office door.
Malcolm Reeves, holding an embossed tablet, stepped in without his usual serene composure. His jaw was set, his silver hair immaculate, yet his eyes betrayed a storm.
"Miss Lancaster," Malcolm said, his voice dropping an octave. "You need to see the morning wire. The Hail Conglomerate just released a press statement."
Ivy took the tablet. Across the top of the city's most influential financial tabloid ran a screaming headline:
BLACKWOOD FOUNDATION ACCUSED OF EMBEZZLEMENT: DISGRACED MAID PROMOTED TO COVER MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR DEFICIT.
The article was written with vicious precision. It alleged that Ivy’s father, the late Thomas Lancaster, had not simply gone bankrupt five years ago—it claimed he had laundered stolen funds into offshore shell corporations, and that Ivy had deliberately infiltrated Blackwood Estate to siphon foundation grants into those hidden accounts. Attached was a forged bank statement bearing Ivy’s signature.
"This is impossible," Ivy murmured, her breath hitching. "My father spent his final days liquidating every piece of property we owned to pay our creditors. He died with empty hands and a clean soul."
"We know that, Ivy," a deep, resonant voice cut through the tension.
Ronan Blackwood walked into the office, his charcoal coat unbuttoned, exuding an aura of immovable authority. His dark eyes locked onto Ivy, instantly steadying the trembling in her hands.
"Julian Hail—Vivian’s father—is pulling the strings behind the financial press," Ronan said, stepping close enough that Ivy could catch the subtle scent of cedarwood and rain on his jacket. "Vivian hasn’t left her penthouse since the ballroom incident, but her father sits on the oversight board of the municipal charity committee. He’s calling an emergency audit of the Blackwood Foundation at noon."
"If they freeze the Foundation's assets, hundreds of families receiving medical aid will suffer," Ivy said, rising to her feet. "I will resign before I let them drag your family's philanthropy into the dirt."
Ronan stepped closer, placing a firm, warm hand over hers on the desk. The heat of his touch was electric, startling them both for a fraction of a second.
"You spent years taking blame for things you didn't do, Ivy," Ronan said softly, his voice vibrating with absolute conviction. "You will not do it under my roof. We don't run from bullies. We dismantle them."
Before Ivy could respond, the double glass doors of the executive suite were shoved open. Two uniformed municipal officers and an attorney in a pinstripe suit marched in, flashing an injunction stamp.
"Miss Ivy Lancaster? You are under investigation for corporate fraud and falsification of philanthropic records," the attorney announced smugly. "You are required to surrender all credentials and step away from this facility immediately."
Ivy’s heart hammered in her throat, but Ronan moved like a wall of granite, placing his broad frame directly between her and the officers.
"On whose authority?" Ronan demanded, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register that made the lead officer hesitate.

"Court order signed by Judge Harrison, Mr. Blackwood," the attorney smirked, holding up a red-sealed document. "Procured this morning by Hail Legal Partners. And unless you intend to obstruct municipal law, your director is coming with us."
