Chapter 9 - SEVENTEEN DOLLARS RETURNED

Two weeks later, the morning sun rose over the Atlantic Ocean, painting the waves breaking outside the Blake family estate in shades of pink, gold, and sapphire. The massive stone manor, set upon thirty acres of private coastal cliffs, was completely silent save for the cry of gulls and the gentle rustle of salt grass in the breeze.

On the wrap-around veranda overlooking the beach, Elena sat in a deep wicker armchair, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket. Her cheeks were full again, the hollows beneath her eyes erased by proper nutrition, high-tier medical care, and the deep, restorative sleep that only comes when terror is permanently removed from the room.

Beside her on the grass, Lily was chasing a golden retriever puppy that Christian had bought her three days ago. The child’s laughter was loud, clear, and ringing—the sound of a girl who had finally been allowed to put down the weight of the world and simply be seven years old.

The glass doors of the patio slid open.

Christian walked out, carrying two porcelain mugs of steaming coffee. He wore a simple linen shirt, sleeves rolled to his elbows, and faded jeans—looking less like a feared billionaire CEO and more like a man who had finally found the ground beneath his feet.

He handed a mug to Elena, then sat down on the wooden steps beside her chair, resting his arm against her knee.

"She hasn't mentioned the basement once," Elena said softly, watching Lily tumble across the lawn as the puppy licked her face. "Dr. Marcus said children are resilient if they feel safe. But sometimes... I see her checking the locks on the doors before she goes to bed."

"She won't have to check them forever," Christian said gently. "In time, she’ll forget how heavy that door was."

Lily suddenly spotted Christian. She scooped the puppy into her arms with an exaggerated grunt of effort and jogged over to the patio steps, her sneakers squeaking against the wood.

"Daddy!" she announced proudly.

The word still sent a jolt of pure, electrifying warmth straight through Christian’s spine every time she said it.

"Yes, peanut?"

"Barnaby learned how to sit," she said, nodding toward the squirming golden puppy. "Well... he sat because I dropped a piece of cheese. But it counts."

"That definitely counts," Christian laughed, reaching out to ruffle her hair.

Elena smiled down at them, but her expression shifted, turning soft and contemplative. She reached into the pocket of her cardigan and pulled out a small, heavy velvet pouch tied with a gold ribbon.

"What's that?" Lily asked, cocking her head.

Christian took the pouch from Elena. He loosened the ribbon and tipped the contents into his open palm.

Seventeen dollars and forty-two cents.

The quarters, dimes, nickels, and crumpled dollar bills that a little girl had poured onto the cold marble floor of Blake Tower had been meticulously cleaned, polished, and preserved.

Christian held the coins out toward Lily.

"Do you remember these?" he asked.

Lily looked down at the money, her blue eyes widening slightly. "My savings."

"You came into my office two weeks ago," Christian said softly, taking her small hand and closing her fingers gently over the coins. "And you asked if you had enough money to buy a father."

Lily looked down at her feet, a brief shadow of embarrassment crossing her face. "The lady at the desk said it wasn't a store."

"She was wrong," Christian said, lifting her chin so she was looking straight into his eyes. "It was the most important transaction that building will ever see. But here's the thing about fathers, Lily."

"What?"

"You don't buy them," Christian whispered, his thumb gently wiping away a trace of grass from her cheek. "They belong to you. Forever. Free of charge. There isn't enough money in the entire world to buy what you gave back to me when you walked through those doors."

Lily stared at the coins in her hand, then looked up at Elena, who was smiling through quiet tears, and back at Christian.

"So... can I use this to buy Barnaby a squeaky toy instead?" Lily asked innocently.

May you like

Christian burst into laughter, scooping Lily up into his arms and pulling Elena into the circle with them, holding both of them tight against the ocean wind.

"Every single cent, peanut," Christian said against her hair. "Every single cent."
