Chapter 5 - BLOOD AND VOTING SHARES

The thirty-fourth floor of Blake Tower was encased in soundproof glass, looking out over the grey Manhattan skyline like an eagle’s aerie. Inside the grand boardroom, the tension was thick enough to choke on. Twenty-two board members sat around the forty-foot Brazilian walnut conference table, whispering in hurried, anxious undertones while financial news networks muted on wall-mounted screens displayed a plummeting Blake Enterprises stock ticker.

At the head of the table stood Richard Blake. Fifty-two years old, silver-haired, impeccably tailored, and radiating the smarmy confidence of a man who believed his coronation was fifteen minutes overdue.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Richard said, raising his hands to command the room. "We all respect what my nephew Christian has built over the last decade. But leadership requires stability. What occurred in our lobby this morning—a bizarre, public spectacle involving an unidentified vagrant child, followed by Christian abandoning the multi-billion-dollar London merger—is clear evidence of an acute mental health crisis."

Several older board members nodded in grave agreement. Sterling, the representative for the European fund, leaned forward. "Richard, if we move forward with the vote of no confidence, do we have a guarantee that the syndicate will return to the table?"

"The syndicate is in my private office right now, waiting for my signature," Richard declared with a triumphant smile. "All we require is the execution of Article 14. A simple majority to appoint me as interim Chief Executive Officer until Christian can undergo comprehensive psychiatric evaluation."

The double doors at the rear of the boardroom burst open with a resounding crack that echoed off the glass walls.

Every head at the table turned.

Christian Blake walked into the room. He had changed into a fresh midnight-blue suit, but he wore no tie. His dark hair was combed back, his posture rigid, his eyes burning with an icy intensity that caused the board members nearest the door to visibly shrink back into their chairs.

Behind him walked David Vance and two armed private security operators carrying heavy leather briefcases.

"You're late, Christian," Richard said, his smile tightening, though a flicker of unease crossed his eyes. "We are in the middle of a formal governance vote."

"Sit down, Richard," Christian said, walking slowly down the length of the table. He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer cold authority in it made the room drop to sub-zero temperatures.

"You don't command this room anymore, nephew," Richard sneered, resting his palms on the table. "You forfeited your authority the moment you turned our corporate headquarters into an orphanage. The board is voting on your suspension."

"The board can vote on whatever fairy tale you’ve sold them," Christian said, reaching the head of the table. He placed both hands on the back of the empty leather chair opposite his uncle. "But before they sign their names to your coup, they might want to review the supplemental materials."

Vance stepped forward, opening the briefcases and sliding a stack of thick, bound dossiers down both sides of the long table. The documents slapped against the polished wood in rhythmic succession.

"What is this nonsense?" Richard scoffed.

"Page three, gentlemen," Christian instructed the room, his eyes never leaving Richard’s face. "Those are bank records detailing seven years of unauthorized wire transfers originating from Blake International’s offshore shell accounts in the Caymans. Totalling forty-eight million dollars."

The room erupted into sudden murmurs. Sterling snatched up the folder, his eyes darting frantically across the printed transaction logs.

"That forty-eight million was laundered through three intermediate holding companies," Christian continued, his voice cutting through the rising chatter like a scalpel. "The final recipient was a series of private medical facilities and real estate slumlords on the Lower East Side. Specifically designed to keep a young woman named Elena Morgan destitute, isolated, and poisoned with controlled pharmaceuticals."

Richard’s face lost every shred of its smug color, turning the shade of spoiled milk. "This is an outrageous fabrication! You're hallucinating! He’s fabricating evidence to cover his dereliction of duty!"

"Page twelve," Christian said, ignoring the outburst. "An affidavit signed thirty minutes ago by Dr. Aris Thorne—the physician you paid fifty thousand dollars a year to prescribe off-label sedatives to keep Elena too sick to ever walk through the doors of this building."

Christian leaned across the table, closing the distance between his face and his uncle's until Richard could see the lethal fury reflected in his nephew's pale blue eyes.

"You told me she took a million dollars and left me, Richard," Christian whispered, loud enough for every terrified board member to hear. "You forged her signature on the non-disclosure agreement. You had your goons threaten her life and the life of her unborn child if she ever contacted me. You stole seven years of my daughter's life."

"Daughter?" Sterling gasped from down the table.

Christian pulled an official, embossed document from his inner jacket pocket and slapped it flat onto the wood in front of Richard.

"Certified DNA paternity match. Ninety-nine point nine percent probability," Christian said. "Her name is Lily Blake. And as of twelve o'clock today, all of my shares, voting proxies, and corporate trusts have been irrevocably restructured to include her as primary beneficiary."

Richard lunged forward, his composure shattering into manic rage. "You ruined this family! My brother gave you everything, and you threw it all away on a gutter girl! You think you can destroy me with a few papers? I will take this company down with me! I will—"

Before Richard could finish, the boardroom doors opened once more.

Four agents in dark suits bearing federal badges stepped into the room, led by a stern-faced woman with an arrest warrant clutched in her hand.

"Richard Blake?" the lead agent announced. "Federal Bureau of Investigation. You are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit aggravated bodily harm. Put your hands behind your back."

As the agents moved in, slapping cold steel handcuffs around Richard’s wrists, Richard twisted violently in their grip, screaming at Christian, his face red and contorted with hate:

"You think you won, Christian?! You think you saved her?! Check the hospital! You were so busy playing CEO down here... you left your precious girl completely unprotected!"
