Chapter 4 - SHADOWS IN THE BOARDROOM

Blake Medical Center had been placed on total lockdown. The entire tenth floor—the VIP surgical wing—was cleared of non-essential personnel. Private security guards clad in tactical gear stood every ten paces along the sterile, brightly lit corridor.

Christian Blake stood outside the double glass doors of the intensive care unit, watching through the observation window. Inside, three surgeons and a team of critical care nurses moved like a synchronized machine around Elena’s bed. Tubes snaked from her throat and arms, connecting her to banks of humming monitors that mapped the erratic dance of her failing heart.

Behind him, sitting in an oversized leather armchair in the private waiting suite, Lily had finally succumbed to exhaustion. She was fast asleep, bathed and dressed in clean oversized hospital scrubs, clutching a stuffed bear the nurses had brought her. Her small chest rose and fell in a steady, peaceful rhythm for the first time in God knows how long.

Dr. Marcus stepped through the ICU doors, pulling his surgical mask down to his neck. His face looked worn, the lines around his eyes etched deep with exhaustion.

"Talk to me, Marcus," Christian said without turning around.

"She’s alive, Christian. Barely." Marcus rubbed the bridge of his nose. "It’s advanced bacterial pneumonia compounded by severe malnutrition and untreated cardiac arrhythmia. If you had found her six hours later, septic shock would have ended it. We’ve placed her in an induced coma to allow the ventilator and high-dose antibiotics to do their work."

"Will she wake up?"

"Her vitals are stabilizing, but there’s something else," Marcus said, his tone dropping an octave. He pulled a manila folder from under his arm and handed it to Christian. "We did a full blood panel upon intake to screen for toxic agents. Her system is saturated with low doses of Phenobarbital."

Christian’s head snapped toward the doctor. "Sedatives?"

"Chronic, low-level administration over months. Just enough to keep someone weak, disoriented, unable to hold down a job or think clearly, but not enough to flag on a standard emergency room tox screen unless you specifically test for it. Someone wasn't just letting her die, Christian. Someone was systematically keeping her down."

A cold, venomous fury settled in Christian’s gut. The puzzle pieces were slamming together with sickening clarity. Seven years ago, his uncle Richard had been the one who handled the 'settlement' when Elena walked away. Richard had presented Christian with bank transfer slips showing a million dollars deposited into Elena's account, claiming she was nothing more than an opportunist who had taken the money to disappear.

It had all been a monstrous lie.

The heavy doors at the end of the private corridor swung open. Grace Chen hurried down the hall, her heels clicking rapidly against the linoleum. Her usually immaculate appearance was frayed, hair escaping its tight bun.

"Christian," she said out of breath. "We have a catastrophic problem."

"Richard?" Christian asked, his voice dead calm.

"He called an emergency shareholder assembly for three o’clock this afternoon," Grace whispered, checking the guards around them. "He’s invoking the Morality and Competency Clause in the company charter. He’s telling the board that you abandoned the London syndicate merger to run off with an unidentified child, that you’re suffering a psychological breakdown, and that you assaulted your security staff in the lobby."

"The board won't listen to him," Christian said dismissively. "I hold thirty-four percent of the voting shares."

"Richard secured the backing of the European consortium during the two hours you were unreachable," Grace said, her hands shaking as she held out a document. "They hold twenty percent. Together with his twelve percent and the institutional investors who panicked when the merger stalled, he has enough votes to suspend your executive powers by five o'clock."

Christian looked through the glass at Elena’s pale face, then looked down the hall at the sleeping child who had carried seventeen dollars in her backpack to save her mother’s life.

"Vance," Christian said quietly into the small microphone clipped to his lapel.

The security chief stepped out from the shadows near the elevator bank. "Sir?"

"Take Lily’s DNA sample from the glass she drank from this morning. Match it against mine. Rush protocol. I want the certified legal results on my desk in three hours."

"Right away, Mr. Blake."

"And Christian," Grace said, stepping in front of him, her eyes wide with alarm. "What are you going to do about the three o’clock meeting? If Richard takes control of Blake Enterprises, he controls the hospital trust. He can terminate the private security contracts here. He can evict her from this wing with the stroke of a pen."

May you like

Christian straightened his cuffs, the cold, merciless mask of the CEO slipping back over his features, harder and deadlier than it had ever been.

"I’m going to go to that meeting," Christian said. "And I’m going to remind my uncle what happens when you try to steal from an empire I built with my bare hands."
