Chapter 6 - THE POISONED DRIP

Christian didn't wait for the elevator. He sprinted down the executive corridor toward the private stairwell, his heart hammering against his ribs like a caged beast.

"Vance! Status at Blake Medical!" Christian yelled into his phone as he took the concrete stairs four at a time, his security team racing behind him.

Static crackled over the line, followed by the sound of erratic shouting and an emergency alarm blaring in the background.

"Sir, we have a breach on the tenth floor!" Vance’s voice was strained, breathless. "Code Black! A medical technician in scrubs bypassed the secondary checkpoint using an overridden security badge! We’re moving to secure Lily right now, but—"

A sharp gunshot echoed through the phone speaker, followed by the deafening sound of shattering glass.

"Vance! VANCE!" Christian roared, bursting out into the underground parking garage. The Maybach was already idling, tires screeching as the driver threw it in reverse to meet him. Christian threw himself into the backseat. "Blake Medical! Move, or I’ll shoot you myself!"

The three-mile drive across Midtown was a blur of blaring horns, skidding tires, and mounting terror.

When the car slammed to a stop outside Blake Medical Center, the street was already swarming with police vehicles. Christian pushed past the perimeter officers who tried to block the entrance, flashing his executive credentials with a savage shove that sent two guards stumbling aside.

He took the emergency service elevator straight to the tenth floor.

When the doors opened, the air smelled of ozone, burnt gunpowder, and chemical fire extinguisher foam. Two private security guards were on the ground, groaning as they clutched bleeding limb wounds. At the far end of the hallway, outside the pediatric recovery suite, Vance was on his knees, pressing a bloody towel against his shoulder, his service weapon lying on the floor beside him.

"Christian..." Vance coughed, his face pale. "In the ICU... he went for Elena's room..."

Christian didn't stop to help. He launched himself through the ICU double doors.

The scene inside the room made his blood run backward.

A man dressed in sterile blue scrubs, his face covered by a surgical mask, stood over Elena’s hospital bed. In his gloved right hand, he held a massive syringe filled with a milky white liquid, poised directly over the primary intravenous line feeding directly into Elena’s central catheter.

On the other side of the bed stood Lily.

The six-year-old child had somehow slipped past the guards during the initial commotion. She was clutching her pink backpack with both arms, tears streaming down her soot-smudged face, her small body trembling violently.

"Stop!" Lily screamed at the man, her tiny voice cracking with unimaginable panic. "Don't hurt Mommy! Take my money! Please, take the seventeen dollars!"

The man in scrubs turned his head slightly, his eyes cold, empty, and devoid of humanity. "Step back, kid. Or you get the needle too."

"Drop it!" Christian's voice boomed through the room like thunder.

The assassin reacted with terrifying speed. Instead of abandoning the syringe, he drove the plunger downward, attempting to inject the lethal neurotoxin straight into the IV port before he could be stopped.

Christian didn't think. He didn't calculate odds. He lunged across the bed, throwing his entire body weight over Elena’s chest and driving his forearm straight into the man's wrist.

The needle snapped off against the hard plastic casing of the valve, spraying the milky chemical harmlessly across the observation glass.

The man snarled, dropping the broken syringe and pulling a ceramic tactical knife from his waistband. He slashed upward in a vicious arc, the blade slicing through Christian’s sleeve and cutting a deep, burning furrow across his bicep. Christian grunted in pain, but his left hand locked around the man's throat, slamming him backward into a cart of surgical instruments.

Metal trays, scalpels, and glass vials crashed to the floor in a catastrophic clatter.

The assassin fought with trained, brutal efficiency, driving his elbow into Christian’s fractured ribs. Christian tasted copper in his mouth, the world spinning gray at the edges, but he held on. He looked at Elena’s motionless face on the bed, at Lily cowering by the nightstand, and something primordial took over.

Roaring with rage, Christian drove his knee into the man's groin, then slammed his forehead directly into the bridge of the assassin’s nose. The sickening crunch of bone echoed in the sterile room. The man staggered, and Christian followed with a devastating right hook that sent the attacker crashing into the corner, out cold.

Christian stood chest-heaving, blood dripping freely from his arm onto the white tiles.

The silence returned, broken only by the steady, rhythmic beep... beep... beep... of Elena's heart monitor.

From behind the nightstand, two small arms slowly wrapped around Christian’s bloody leg.

Christian looked down. Lily was burying her face into his trousers, her entire frame shaking with dry, hitching sobs. She had held it together on the subway, in the rain, on the cold marble floor of Blake Tower, and in the squalor of the basement. But now, the wall had broken.

Christian slowly sank to the floor, ignoring the burning pain in his arm and ribs, and gathered the little girl into his lap. He held her tight against his chest, shielding her from the sight of the unconscious man on the floor.

"It's over, Lily," Christian whispered, his voice cracking as he buried his face in her damp blonde curls. "You don't have to be brave anymore. I’m here. I’m your dad, and nobody is ever going to hurt you again."

As Lily sobbed into his shoulder, the heart monitor beside them suddenly spiked.

Christian froze, looking up at the bed.

Elena’s hand, covered in medical tape and IV lines, was moving. Her pale, slender fingers slowly reached out, trembling in the air, searching until they brushed against the top of Christian’s bloodstained hand.

May you like

Her eyes cracked open, completely clear of the fog for the very first time.

"Christian..." she whispered, a tear tracing a clean path down her hollow cheek. "You found us."
