Chapter 8 - THE STOLEN EMPIRE

The appearance of federal badges turned the boardroom into complete pandemonium.
"What is the meaning of this?" Arthur Sterling-Hayes demanded, standing up so abruptly his leather chair tipped over backward. "I am the managing partner of Sterling-Hayes Capital! You have no authority to disrupt an executive meeting!"
"Arthur Sterling-Hayes," Special Agent Marcus Vance (no relation) announced, flashing his gold shield. "We have an arrest warrant for you and Eleanor Vance for conspiracy to commit bank fraud, wire fraud, and illegal securities manipulation through offshore shell corporations."
Eleanor didn't move. She stood as rigid as a marble statue, her cold eyes locked onto Adrian with pure, unadulterated hatred.
"You called the feds on your own mother?" she whispered, the venom in her voice sending chills through the room. "I gave you everything, Adrian. I gave you this name! I gave you this empire!"
"You tried to destroy my sons before they were even born," Adrian replied, his voice completely devoid of pity. "You stole forty-two million dollars from the employee pension fund over twelve years to fund Apex Horizon, and then you tried to bankrupt this firm so you could buy back the construction assets debt-free. Did you really think my father didn't keep records?"
Adrian gestured toward the ledger on the table.
"My father documented every fraudulent wire transfer you made between 2012 and 2019. He knew you were planning to liquidate the company. That’s why he created the bloodline trust. He knew the only thing powerful enough to stop you was the one thing you couldn't control: an heir born of love, not corporate convenience."
Claire stood by the window, holding Leo’s hand. Matthew, Noah, and Daniel stood shoulder-to-shoulder in front of their mother, watching the chaotic scene with solemn understanding. They were young, but they understood that this terrifying woman in green jewels had tried to hurt their mother.
"You have no proof of wire fraud," Eleanor spat, looking desperately at the board members. "Julian! Tell them! This is an internal corporate dispute!"
Julian Mercer stood up, buttoning his jacket, looking at Eleanor with undisguised contempt. "The SEC server already has the forensic accounting logs, Eleanor. I handed them over at six o'clock this morning. Your offshore accounts in Grand Cayman have already been frozen by international court order."
Federal agents moved in, unclipping pairs of steel handcuffs.
"Eleanor Vance, you have the right to remain silent," Agent Marcus said, taking her slender wrists and pulling them behind her back.
Click.
The metallic snap of the handcuffs echoed through the silent boardroom.
For the first time in her life, Eleanor Vance looked small. The emerald necklace seemed heavy, dragging down her fragile shoulders. As she was escorted past Claire and the four boys, she stopped for a single heartbeat.
Her gaze met Matthew’s hazel eyes.
Matthew didn't flinch. He looked at his grandmother with the calm, unwavering authority of a true Vance.
"You shouldn't have made my Mommy cry," Matthew said softly.
Eleanor opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. The agents pulled her through the heavy double doors and out toward the service elevators where press cameras were already waiting on the ground floor.
Arthur Sterling-Hayes was escorted out right behind her, his face buried in his hands to avoid the flashbulbs waiting down the hall.
Adrian turned toward the stunned board members.
"The merger with Sterling-Hayes Capital is officially canceled," Adrian announced, his voice carrying the full weight of the fifty-one percent majority. "We will restructure our debt through the Thomas Vance Descendants Trust. Vance Infrastructure will remain independent, private, and family-owned. Meeting adjourned."
The board members, realizing that Adrian held absolute power, stood up one by one and began to applaud.
Adrian didn't stay to bask in the victory. He turned his back on the applause, walked straight over to Claire, and lifted Leo into his arms.

"Come on," Adrian said, a genuine smile breaking across his face for the first time in six years. "Let’s take our boys home."
