Chapter 6 - SHADOWS AT THE PENTHOUSE

"Step away from the box, Mr. Vance," Victor Cole said, his voice level and devoid of emotion. His right hand rested casually inside his open overcoat, touching the grip of a concealed firearm.
Claire instantly stepped back against the wall of safety deposit boxes, her instinct to shield the space behind her even though the boys were safely upstairs with Thomas in the armored vehicle.
Adrian didn't flinch. He slowly closed the metal lid of Box 408 and tucked the leather ledger securely under his arm.
"You're trespassing in a private vault, Victor," Adrian said calmly. "The bank cameras are recording every move you make."
Victor offered a cold, thin smile. "The security feeds in this corridor experienced a scheduled maintenance glitch two minutes ago. Mrs. Vance anticipated you might visit your father's vault this morning. She asked me to ensure that whatever personal family mementos you retrieved were delivered directly to her office for safekeeping."
"Safekeeping?" Adrian took a deliberate step forward, his tall frame towering over the security chief. "Tell my mother that if she wants this ledger, she'll have to pry it from my cold hands in front of the entire board of directors."
Victor’s men stepped forward, closing the distance in the narrow vault aisle. The air in the room grew suffocatingly dense.
"Mr. Vance, your mother has already assumed interim control. You have no legal standing, your accounts are frozen, and the police have been notified that you are in possession of proprietary company records. Hand over the ledger, and we’ll allow Ms. Sterling to walk out of here unharmed."
The threat against Claire was subtle, but it shattered Adrian's remaining restraint.
In a split-second movement, Adrian swung the heavy leather ledger directly into the face of the closest security guard, shattering his nose with a wet crunch. Before the second guard could draw his weapon, Adrian drove his shoulder into Victor Cole’s chest, slamming the older man against the brass vault drawers.
"Claire, run!" Adrian shouted.
Claire didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy steel security stool from beside the viewing table and hurled it directly into the legs of the third guard, tripping him violently across the polished marble. She sprinted for the vault exit, pulling the heavy fire alarm lever beside the door.
A piercing siren echoed through the subterranean vaults. Halon fire doors began to slide shut automatically with a grinding pneumatic hiss.
Adrian kicked Victor’s fallen weapon across the floor, darted through the closing fire door just as it slammed down with a resounding boom, and grabbed Claire’s hand as they raced up the emergency stairs into the crowded financial district street.
Rain was pouring over Wall Street as they burst through the revolving doors. Thomas pulled the Maybach onto the curb, tires screeching against the asphalt.
"Get in! Get in!" Thomas yelled through the lowered window.
Adrian shoved Claire into the backseat, dove in behind her, and slammed the door just as Victor’s men emerged from the bank building.
Thomas slammed the gas, weaving the heavy sedan through the gridlocked morning traffic.
In the backseat, the four boys were wide awake. Matthew looked at his father’s bruised knuckles, his hazel eyes completely calm.
"Did you fight the bad guys, Dad?" Matthew asked quietly.
The word ‘Dad’ hit Adrian like a physical blow to the chest. It was the first time any of his sons had called him that.
Adrian reached out, pulling Matthew and little Leo into his lap, wrapping his arms tightly around them.
"I’m fighting for you," Adrian whispered, his throat tight with emotion. "And I promise you, we are going to win."
His phone buzzed. It was Dr. Kenneth Reed.
"Adrian," the doctor’s voice came through the car speakers, crystal clear and trembling with excitement. "The PCR results are in. 99.999% genetic match across all four boys. They are your biological sons, without a shadow of a doubt. The certified paternity packets are signed, sealed, and on their way to Park Avenue right now."
Adrian looked up at Claire. Her eyes were shining with tears, but her chin was held high.

"Thomas," Adrian ordered, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Take us to Vance Tower. The board meeting starts in fifteen minutes."
