Chapter 3 - BLOOD ON THE CRYSTAL GLASS

Eleanor Vance looked as though she had stepped out of an oil portrait painted for a dynasty. Her silver-streaked hair was sculpted to perfection, her emerald necklace glimmering against her alabaster skin. But the moment her cold eyes landed on the four identical faces clinging to Claire’s apron, her aristocratic composure cracked for a fraction of a second.

"Adrian," Eleanor said, her voice dripping with ice. "The board members are waiting. Claudia’s father has already called the press into the main dining room. What on earth are you doing lingering in the servants' quarters?"

She didn't look at Claire. She looked past her, treating the woman and the four boys as though they were stains on expensive wallpaper.

Adrian stood up slowly. The forged document crinkled inside his fist. The sound of his own pulse roared in his ears, deafening and furious.

"You knew," Adrian said, his voice deadly quiet. "You knew she was carrying quadruplets."

Eleanor didn't flinch. Her lips tightened into a thin, merciless line. "I know that a young man of your standing cannot afford to have his life derailed by an opportunistic kitchen maid who tried to trap an empire with an unverified pregnancy. I did what was necessary to protect your inheritance. Now give her whatever cash you have in your wallet and come upstairs. You have a merger to close."

"A merger," Adrian repeated, feeling a surge of pure disgust rise in his throat. "You didn't just pay her off, Mother. You forged my name on a parental surrender document while my children were fighting for their lives in an incubator."

"Adrian, lower your voice!" Eleanor hissed, stepping forward, her manicured nails digging into the sleeve of his jacket. "You are thirty minutes away from securing a one-hundred-and-eighty-million-dollar credit line from Claudia’s family. Without it, Vance Infrastructure goes into bankruptcy by Friday morning. Do you understand what is at stake here? Our family name! Everything your father built!"

"My father built a company, Mother," Adrian snarled, ripping his arm out of her grasp. "He didn't build a machine to discard his own flesh and blood."

Without waiting for her reply, Adrian turned toward Claire. The boys were staring at him in terrified silence. Matthew had his arms wrapped protectively around Noah and Daniel, while Leo was silently crying against Claire’s hip.

Adrian knelt down once more. He reached out and gently smoothed Leo’s tangled dark hair.

"Claire," Adrian said, his tone shifting into something warm, steady, and resolute. "My driver, Thomas, is waiting at the side entrance in the black Maybach. Take the boys to the penthouse. Thomas will order food, get warm clothes, and make sure nobody bothers you. I swear on my life, you are safe."

Claire looked from Adrian’s burning eyes to Eleanor’s furious glare. She realized Adrian was not the same boy who had let his mother dictate his life six years ago. She nodded once, a quick, silent agreement, took Leo into her arms, and guided the other three boys down the rear exit stairs.

Eleanor watched them vanish, her chest heaving beneath her emeralds. "If you do not propose to Claudia tonight, Adrian, I will convene an emergency board meeting before midnight and have you stripped of your CEO title. I hold the voting proxy for your late father’s shares."

"Then you better start dialing, Mother," Adrian said coldly.

He turned on his heel and strode up the private staircase toward the grand dining hall.

The dining room was a sea of crystal chandeliers, white orchids, and high-society chatter. Flashbulbs went off as Adrian entered. Claudia Vance—radiant in a custom ivory gown, clutching a glass of vintage Dom Pérignon—smiled as he approached the head table where her father, Arthur Sterling-Hayes, sat beside the top executives of the city's financial elite.

"There he is!" Arthur boomed, raising his glass. "The man of the hour! Let’s get this toast underway before the champagne goes warm!"

Adrian took the microphone from the podium. The room fell into an eager, expectant silence. Photographers raised their cameras, ready to capture the official union of two corporate empires.

Adrian looked across the room at his mother, who was stepping through the double doors, her eyes burning with a silent, lethal warning.

Adrian looked down at the velvet box in his pocket, then looked Claudia straight in the eye.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Adrian’s voice echoed through the microphone, steady, crisp, and resonant. "Tonight was meant to celebrate an engagement. But I cannot offer my hand in marriage when my heart and my duty belong elsewhere."

Gasps rippled across the room. Claudia’s smile froze into a mask of horror.

"The engagement between myself and Claudia is officially terminated. And as of this moment, Vance Infrastructure will decline the investment package."

Adrian placed the microphone on the silver tray, reached into his jacket, pulled out the forged legal document, and tossed it into the center of the head table. The papers knocked over a crystal champagne flute, sending dark red wine spilling across the crisp white tablecloth like fresh blood.

"Find another puppet, Mother," Adrian said into the stunned silence.

He turned his back on the cameras and walked out into the cold Manhattan rain, heading straight for the penthouse where his four sons were waiting.
