Chapter 5 - GHOSTS IN THE SAFE DEPOSIT BOX

The cold morning light crept over the Hudson River, casting grey shadows across the glass walls of the penthouse.

Inside, the atmosphere was a battle zone. Claire had dressed the boys in the warmest clothes Thomas had managed to purchase from a 24-hour department store. Four oversized wool sweaters, warm socks, and sturdy winter boots. The boys were sitting around the kitchen island, eating pancakes with pure delight, oblivious to the storm gathering outside the heavy double doors.

"Mommy, is this hotel our new home?" Daniel asked, licking maple syrup from his fingers.

Claire forced a gentle smile, stroking his hair. "Just for a little bit, sweetie. Eat up."

Adrian stood by the foyer, buttoning a charcoal-grey suit. Beside him stood Dr. Kenneth Reed, a trusted private physician who had handled executive medical exams for Vance Infrastructure for two decades.

Dr. Reed finished sealing four sterile swab tubes into tamper-evident biohazard bags.

"I’m running this through my private lab on 68th Street, Adrian," Dr. Reed said quietly. "I’ll expedite the PCR markers myself. You’ll have the certified legal paternity report in exactly three hours."

"Thank you, Kenneth. I need three stamped copies delivered directly to the Vance Boardroom on Park Avenue," Adrian instructed.

As Dr. Reed left through the service elevator, Adrian turned to Claire. "Thomas is taking you and the boys to a private safe house in upstate New York. It belongs to my father’s oldest friend. Nobody knows the address."

Claire shook her head, her jaw set with fierce determination. "I’m not running anymore, Adrian. For six years I ran from shadows and private investigators. If your mother is trying to throw us out on the street again, I want to look her in the eye when she fails."

Adrian looked at her, seeing the fierce, unyielding woman he had fallen in love with in college. She wasn't the terrified girl from the clinic anymore. She was a mother fighting for her children’s future.

"All right," Adrian said, stepping closer, his voice softening. "Then you stay by my side. But before we face the board, we have one stop to make."

Twenty minutes later, Adrian’s Maybach pulled up before the granite facade of the Manhattan Safe Deposit & Trust on Wall Street.

Under the deep subterranean vaults, Adrian unlocked Box 408—a private box his father had left to him with instructions to open only “when the wolves inside the house show their teeth.”

Inside lay a single leather-bound ledger and a heavy bronze key.

Adrian flipped open the ledger. The handwriting inside belonged to his late father, Thomas Vance. Page after page detailed financial transfers made by Eleanor over fifteen years. Millions of dollars systematically siphoned from construction payrolls into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.

Taped to the final page was a handwritten letter from his father:

> “Adrian, if you are reading this, Eleanor has made her move. She never cared for the steel or the men who poured the concrete. She married me for the lineage, and she will consume you to preserve her illusion of power. The bronze key opens the secondary vault at the Zurich branch. Inside is the original founding charter of Vance Infrastructure. I placed sixty percent of the company’s voting shares into an irrevocable trust held exclusively for my bloodline—my grandchildren. No proxy can overturn it. No board can dissolve it.”

Adrian’s breath caught in his throat.

His father hadn't left the control of the company to Eleanor. He hadn't even left it entirely to Adrian. He had tied the ultimate authority of the Vance Empire directly to the continuation of the Vance bloodline.

If Adrian had no children, Eleanor held the proxy. But the moment legal Vance grandchildren existed, Eleanor’s proxy was automatically rendered null and void.

Adrian slammed the ledger shut, his eyes blazing with cold fire.

"She didn't pay you off just to keep us apart, Claire," Adrian whispered, looking at her with sudden, terrifying clarity. "She forced you to leave because she knew that if those four boys were born, her entire empire would turn to dust the second their birth certificates were filed."

Before Claire could respond, the heavy steel door of the vault room groaned open.

Standing in the doorway was not a bank guard.

It was Victor Cole—Eleanor Vance’s private head of security—accompanied by three armed men in dark overcoats.
