Chapter 7 - THE SIGNATURE THAT WASN’T HERS

“Open it.”
Alina entered the trustee credentials.
The file loaded.
Bella stopped breathing.
Her name appeared beneath three paragraphs authorizing temporary use of future-beneficiary reserves.
Underneath was a signature.
Bella Moretti.
It looked like hers.
Not perfectly.
But close enough that someone who saw her signature only occasionally might accept it.
Matteo swore under his breath.
Bella stared.
“That isn’t mine.”
“We know,” Alina said.
“No. Look at the B.”
She pointed.
“I stopped signing it that way after college.”
Alina enlarged the image.
“Where would someone find an older signature?”
Bella thought.
Old contracts.
Wedding papers.
House documents.
Then something colder occurred to her.
“Baby shower.”
Matteo frowned.
Bella turned toward Alina.
“Three months ago, the family foundation paid the deposit for the shower venue. I signed the vendor confirmation because Adriano was traveling.”
“Who processed it?”
“I don’t know.”
Alina immediately began searching administrative records.
The answer appeared minutes later.
David’s office.
Matteo’s face hardened.
“That proves access, not forgery.”
Bella looked at him.
“I know.”
She had learned enough to distrust convenient conclusions.
The next morning, Bella asked Bianca to meet her again.
Not because she trusted her.
Because Bianca was the only person who stood between every side of the story.
This time Bianca arrived without the camel coat.
Without makeup.
And without the diamond ring.
She placed the ring on the café table before sitting.
“What is that?”
“I’m giving it back.”
“To me?”
“To Adriano. I assumed you would see him before I do.”
Bella did not touch it.
“I am not his courier.”
Bianca flinched.
“Fair.”
Bella studied her.
“Did you know your company had been added to the eight-million-dollar transfer?”
“No.”
“Did David know you?”
Bianca hesitated.
Bella caught it.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“My aunt.”
There it was.
“Explain.”
Bianca wrapped both hands around her coffee.
“David contacted Victoria about six weeks ago.”
“Why?”
“He said Adriano was doing exactly what Matteo had always allowed him to do—using family assets as though they belonged personally to him.”
Bella remained silent.
“He wanted Victoria to help prove it.”
“By putting eight million dollars through your company?”
“No.”
Bianca looked genuinely angry now.
“That wasn’t the plan.”
“What was?”
“To make Adriano commit in writing that he knew the reserves were protected.”
Bella thought of Adriano’s signed clause.
He had.
“Victoria believed if Matteo saw Adriano repeat the same behavior from 2008, he would finally stop protecting him.”
“And you?”
Bianca looked down.
“I wanted Adriano free.”
The honesty surprised Bella.
“You wanted my marriage destroyed.”
“It was already destroyed.”
Bella leaned forward.
“You slept with my husband while I was recovering from losing a child.”
Bianca’s face went pale.
“He told me you had emotionally separated.”
“You believed that?”
“I wanted to.”
At least she had the decency not to pretend.
Bella sat back.
“Did you love him?”
Bianca looked toward the window.
“Yes.”
That answer hurt in a different way.
Not because Bella feared competition.
Because affairs were easier to dismiss when everyone involved was shallow.
Sometimes people did enormous damage while feeling something real.
Bianca continued.
“He became someone else when he talked about you.”
Bella looked at her sharply.
“I don’t need details.”
“That isn’t what I mean.”
Bianca’s eyes filled.
“He talked about being afraid to come home because you were always scared something would happen to the baby. I thought he meant you were difficult.”
Bella felt her jaw tighten.
Bianca swallowed.
“I understand now that he meant he was a coward.”
Silence settled between them.
Bella did not forgive her.
But hatred became less simple.
“Show me David’s messages.”
Bianca unlocked her phone.
The thread was businesslike.
David never mentioned Bella directly.
He discussed escrow routing, trustee review, and a “demonstration of unauthorized intent.”
Then, four nights earlier, his language changed.
USE BIANCA EVENTS AS INTERMEDIATE ENTITY.
Victoria responded twenty minutes later.
NO. THAT MAKES HER COMPLICIT.
David replied:
ONLY ON PAPER. FUNDS WILL BE FROZEN BEFORE RELEASE.
Bella’s skin went cold.
David intended to manufacture a more damaging trail.
“He wanted it to look worse,” Bella said.
Bianca nodded.
“My aunt argued with him.”
“Did she stop him?”
“No.”
That mattered.
Victoria may not have designed the alteration.
But she knew.
“And you?”
“I didn’t see these messages until yesterday. My aunt showed me after you confronted me.”
Bella scrolled farther.
One message appeared Sunday at 2:18 a.m.
Authorization attached.
Bianca opened the attachment.
The forged signature.
Bella’s face went cold.
“Who sent that?”
“David.”
There was the evidence.
But Bianca kept scrolling.
“There’s something else.”
A message from Victoria.
WHERE DID YOU GET HER SIGNATURE?
David’s answer:
FROM A DOCUMENT SHE WILL NEVER REMEMBER SIGNING.
Bella stared at it.
Baby shower paperwork.
Used to manufacture consent to take her unborn child’s money.
She felt something inside her harden permanently.
“Send this entire thread to Alina.”
Bianca nodded.
Then she reached into her bag.
“I have one more thing.”
She removed another photograph.
This one showed Elena Moretti and Victoria standing together at a company Christmas party.
Between them stood David, perhaps thirty years old.
Elena was fastening the gold watch around his wrist.
On the back, Elena had written:
When Adriano is protected from himself, you must protect everyone else from him.
Bella read it twice.
David had not invented his resentment.
Elena had given him a responsibility.
And he had twisted it.
That afternoon the trustees issued an emergency freeze.
The Monday transfer could not move.
For the first time in weeks, Bella breathed fully.
Then Alina delivered the next problem.
“David is demanding a full trustee hearing tomorrow night.”
“Why?”
“He says the freeze proves he was right.”
Bella stared at her.
“He forged my signature.”
“He claims he never intended the transfer to complete. He says the false authorization was part of an internal integrity test designed to force Matteo to act.”
“That is insane.”
“It may also be partly true.”
Matteo entered behind Alina.
His expression was grim.
“David has already sent copies of Adriano’s original signed withdrawal request to every trustee.”
Bella understood immediately.
Even if David fell, Adriano could still fall with him.
Good.
If consequences were real, they could not apply only to the person Bella hated more.
“What does he want?” she asked.
Matteo answered.
“My removal as chairman.”
Bella blinked.
“And Adriano’s removal as managing director.”
Alina added quietly, “He wants control transferred to himself.”
Bella looked from one to the other.
There it was.
Duty.
Resentment.
Ambition.
All living inside the same man.
Before leaving, Bella noticed Bianca’s diamond ring still inside her purse.
She had forgotten to return it.
She took it out.
Inside the band was an engraving.
A + B.
Then a date.
Bella stared.
The date was seven months earlier.
She counted backward automatically.
May you like
Her second miscarriage had happened eight months ago.
Adriano had ordered Bianca’s ring less than five weeks after holding Bella through that night.
