Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF BEING PROTECTED

Bella did not speak for several seconds.

Eight million dollars.

Not a random transfer.

Not a coincidence.

The exact value of Victoria Rever’s lost stake.

“You knew,” Bella said finally.

Adriano looked exhausted.

“I found out six months ago.”

“How?”

“Victoria showed Bianca copies.”

Bella’s stomach turned.

“So Bianca introduced you.”

“Yes.”

“Before or after you started sleeping with her?”

Adriano’s silence answered.

Bella looked away.

Of course.

Even his attempt at restitution had grown from betrayal.

“When did the affair start?”

“Bella.”

“When?”

“After the second miscarriage.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Bella stared at him.

“You sat on that bathroom floor with me until sunrise.”

“I know.”

“You held me.”

“I know.”

“And then you went to her?”

“Not that night.”

She stepped backward.

As though the exact number of days might save him.

Adriano’s voice roughened.

“I was angry at everything. At myself. At God. At the doctors. I couldn’t come home and watch you be afraid every minute.”

“So you found someone who wasn’t grieving.”

His face tightened.

“Yes.”

The honesty was almost crueler than another lie.

Bella pressed her lips together until she trusted herself to speak.

“You escaped the room and left me inside it.”

“I know.”

“No. You know the sentence. You don’t know what it cost.”

Adriano closed his eyes briefly.

Bella returned to the ledger.

“Did Victoria demand eight million?”

He hesitated.

“That is complicated.”

She laughed bitterly.

“There’s that word again.”

“She wanted the truth corrected.”

“Money?”

“She wanted restitution too.”

“From whom?”

“My father.”

Bella looked at him.

“And instead you decided to pay her with protected money.”

“I intended to replace it.”

“With what?”

“I’m selling my stake in two commercial properties.”

“When?”

“After closing.”

“Which happens after Monday.”

“Yes.”

“So you were going to borrow from our son without permission and put it back before anyone noticed.”

“It wasn’t his entire inheritance.”

Bella stared at him.

Adriano immediately realized what he had said.

“Bella—”

“There.”

She pointed at him.

“That.”

“What?”

“That is exactly what’s wrong with you.”

Her voice lowered.

“You think stealing becomes borrowing if you plan to return it.”

“I was fixing something I caused.”

“With money that wasn’t yours.”

“I didn’t see another way.”

“Sell the apartment you bought Bianca.”

His face hardened.

“Sell your cars. Sell the house in Nantucket. Sell the watch your grandfather left you. Sell your pride.”

Bella stepped closer.

“You had plenty of things that belonged to you.”

Adriano said nothing.

“You chose the thing that belonged to somebody who could not stop you.”

She placed her hand on her stomach.

“Our son.”

That landed.

Adriano sat heavily on the nursery chair.

For the first time, Bella saw not the mafia boss people feared.

Not Matteo’s heir.

Just a man realizing that his private definition of justice had always required somebody else to pay.

Bella took the photocopied ledger.

“I’m showing this to Alina.”

Adriano stood.

“No.”

“You no longer get a vote.”

“If my father sees that page before I recover the originals, he will bury everything.”

“He already admitted enough.”

“No. There is more.”

Bella stopped.

Adriano continued.

“Victoria says my father altered the final trust report after Elena objected.”

“Your mother?”

“Yes.”

“What did she do?”

“She signed a dissent statement.”

Bella remembered the handwriting on the photograph.

Do not believe him.

“Where is it?”

“Missing.”

“Convenient.”

“That is why I agreed to pay Victoria.”

Bella turned slowly.

“You agreed to take money from the trust because she has your mother’s statement?”

“She has access to whoever has it.”

“Who?”

“She wouldn’t tell me.”

Bella looked at the ledger again.

She was beginning to understand why Adriano believed he was doing something noble.

That made it worse.

He was not stealing for yachts or another diamond.

He had convinced himself he was correcting an old injustice.

And because the reason felt righteous, he believed the rules should bend.

Bella left with the photocopies.

Alina spent two hours comparing them with archived reports.

At six thirty, she found the discrepancy.

The original 2008 year-end report showed Victoria voluntarily relinquishing her equity to cover a failed investment.

Adriano’s copy showed the loss being assigned to her without consent.

One version was false.

“We need the original ledger,” Alina said.

“Adriano says Victoria knows where it is.”

Matteo sat across the room.

He looked furious.

Not at Bella.

At the past.

“Victoria retained copies of everything,” he said.

Bella turned.

“You knew?”

“She was meticulous.”

“Did she voluntarily give up eight million dollars?”

Matteo did not answer.

Alina did.

“No.”

Bella looked at Matteo.

“What happened to Elena’s dissent statement?”

His eyes lifted slowly.

“I destroyed my copy.”

Alina went still.

Bella whispered, “Why?”

“Because my wife was prepared to testify against me.”

Silence.

Matteo looked at the photograph Bella had brought.

“She told me protecting Adriano would ruin him.”

His voice had lost its authority.

“I told her she was being dramatic.”

Bella thought about the yellow instruction sheet.

Alternative authorization.

Matteo continued.

“Elena said if I taught our son that love meant removing consequences, one day he would hurt everyone who loved him.”

Bella swallowed.

“And she was right.”

“Yes.”

It was the first completely honest thing Matteo had said.

Alina’s laptop chimed softly.

She opened a newly returned access log.

Then she frowned.

“What?”

Bella moved beside her.

Alina pointed.

The eight-million-dollar wire instructions had been edited at 2:14 in the morning four nights earlier.

Adriano’s credentials had created the initial transfer to escrow.

A second credential had changed the destination to Bianca’s company.

Bella read the name.

DAVID MORETTI — TRUSTEE ACCESS.

Matteo stood.

“No.”

Alina enlarged the record.

There was no mistake.

David had changed the wire.

Bella looked at Matteo.

“You said David would run the company if Adriano was removed.”

Matteo’s face went white with anger.

May you like

“Yes.”

“Then your backup heir just put my son’s money directly into the scandal that could make him your next boss.”
