Chapter 1 - THE MONEY BEHIND THE BETRAYAL
Bella Moretti had trusted Adriano because she loved him.
For years, that trust had seemed deserved. After their second miscarriage, Adriano had sat beside her on the bathroom floor until sunrise, holding her while she cried. When her third pregnancy survived the dangerous early months, he had wept against her stomach and promised that nothing mattered more than Bella and their child.
Then Bella found the second phone.
Perfume on his coat followed.
Then restaurant charges, drivers, jewelry stores, private flights, and boutiques Bella had never visited.
She did not confront him.
While Adriano believed his pregnant wife was comparing nursery colors, Bella spent a month comparing bank statements to his calendar.
The truth was worse than adultery.
Adriano had bought Bianca an apartment, a car, expensive trips, and a diamond ring. But several purchases had not come from his personal accounts.
They came from the Moretti Legacy Trust.
That trust belonged to future generations.
Including Bella’s unborn son.
And eight million dollars was scheduled to leave it Monday morning through Bianca’s company before reaching Victoria Rever, one of the Moretti family’s oldest rivals.
Bella had gone looking for proof of an affair.
She had found someone digging an escape tunnel through her child’s inheritance.
Instead of confronting Adriano, Bella secretly met Don Matteo Moretti, Adriano’s seventy-one-year-old father, and Alina Viscari, independent counsel to the trust.
Matteo initially warned Bella that he would not punish his son merely for cheating.
Bella calmly pushed the financial records across the table.
“I didn’t come about his mistress.”
Everything changed.
Alina confirmed Adriano managed the Moretti empire but did not own its protected assets. Bella’s medically confirmed unborn son was already a beneficiary.
If Adriano knowingly misused protected funds, the trustees could remove him.
There was one complication.
They needed proof of intent.
Bella also learned something Adriano did not know she knew: after an earlier incident involving a trust-owned warehouse, emergency documents had already named Bella temporary representative if Adriano endangered protected assets again.
Matteo had once believed that warning had changed his son.
Bella no longer believed warnings changed men who never suffered consequences.
She refused any claim to Adriano’s position.
She wanted only to protect her child.
“What do you need from me?” she asked.
“Proof Adriano knows the money is protected,” Alina answered, “and intends to move it anyway.”
