Chapter 8 - THE TRAP AT WILLOW CREEK

"You're bluffing, Victor," I said, my voice dangerously steady, forcing my racing mind to calculate the tactical variables.

"Am I?" Victor sneered over the comms. "Check the facial recognition on the guard outside Room 104 at your mountain facility. That's Sergeant Bradley. Former private security for Wolfe Logistics. He owes me five million dollars in cartel gambling debts. His family lives on my estate. He does what I say, or his children disappear."

I switched my encrypted satellite channel to Ray’s direct line without breaking the radio connection to Victor.

"Ray. Status on Tessa’s room. Code Red. Bradley is compromised," I whispered in sub-audible throat-mic frequency.

A brief pause followed on the line. Then Ray’s calm, battle-hardened voice came back. "Copy that, Jack. We picked up anomalous biometric signatures on Bradley two minutes ago. He didn't know we upgraded the ICU perimeter to biometric retinal scanners. Bradley has been neutralized silently with a tranquilizer dart. The detonator is in our possession. Tessa is one hundred percent secure and breathing on her own."

A wave of intense relief washed over me, but I kept my tone frozen, letting Victor believe he still held the upper hand.

"What do you want, Victor?" I asked into the Wolfe radio channel.

"Come to the central courtyard of the main mansion. Alone. Unarmed," Victor ordered. "You sign a full confession taking responsibility for the assault on Dominic, Julian, and my property, and I let Tessa live. If I see a single federal agent or tactical weapon in your hands, I trigger the bomb."

"I'm coming," I said.

I dropped my heavy rifle and plate carrier on the armory floor, appearing to disarm for the estate’s overhead security cameras. But beneath my tactical field jacket, I concealed two micro-ceramic blades, a high-frequency pulse scrambler, and a single customized .45 caliber 1911 pistol tucked inside my small-of-the-back holster.

I stepped out of the burning armory into the open courtyard.

The storm had peaked. Lightning tore across the black clouds, casting jagged white light over the stone columns and marble fountains of the Wolfe estate.

Standing on the elevated terrace of the grand mansion was Victor Wolfe. He had discarded his charcoal suit for a heavy tactical trench coat. In his right hand, he held a sleek black detonator with a glowing red LED light. Flanking him on either side were his last four elite personal bodyguards—hardened international mercenaries armed with automatic carbines.

"Down on your knees, soldier!" Victor shouted over the thunder. "On your knees before the man who owns this city!"

I walked slowly across the gravel courtyard, stopping fifteen feet below the terrace steps. The rain soaked through my hair and dripped from my chin, but my eyes remained locked on Victor’s face.

"Your sons are broken, Victor," I said, each word cutting through the storm. "Your supply lines at Pier 14 are seized. The federal warrants have bypassed your corrupt judges. By dawn, the Wolfe name will be an obituary in federal court."

"The Wolfe family will survive long after you and that stubborn bitch are rotting in unmarked graves!" Victor screamed, his face contorting in manic rage. "She thought she could challenge me? She thought she could take my harbor? I should have let Dominic crush her skull completely on that living room floor!"

"Thank you," I said softly.

Victor blinked, confused. "What?"

I reached into my lapel and tapped the small, blinking blue LED pinned to my collar.

"Every word you just spoke was transmitted live to the Federal Joint Terrorism Task Force, the State Attorney General, and the regional media broadcast networks," I said. "You just confessed to treason, premeditated murder, and domestic terrorism on an open federal channel."

Victor’s eyes widened in horror. He looked down at the detonator in his hand.

"Then you die with me!" Victor shrieked, pressing the red trigger button.

Nothing happened.

The high-frequency pulse scrambler in my pocket had already neutralized the local radio frequencies within a fifty-foot radius.

"Kill him! Kill him now!" Victor roared to his bodyguards.

May you like

Before the mercenaries could raise their carbines, the sky above the mansion erupted in a blinding cascade of light and thunder.
