Chapter 10 - THE FALL OF AN EMPIRE

Forty-eight hours after the siege at Willow Creek Manor, the collapse of the Wolfe dynasty dominated every national news broadcast across the country.

On the television mounted in the private rehabilitation suite, anchorwoman Sarah Jenkins delivered the final post-mortem on the crime syndicate:

"...In what federal prosecutors are calling the largest anti-corruption takedown in state history, former billionaire Victor Wolfe and six of his seven sons have been indicted on over one hundred and forty federal counts. Former Detective Miller and twelve municipal officials have been taken into custody for their complicity in the cover-up. Mason Wolfe, the youngest son, has been granted immunity after providing the critical digital evidence that dismantled the syndicate from the inside..."

I clicked the remote control and turned the screen off.

The morning sunlight was streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the private military recovery center in the mountains. The air smelled of fresh pine, clean rain, and the faint, sweet scent of the vanilla orchid lotion I had placed on the bedside table.

Tessa lay in the center of the room.

The heavy ventilators and invasive trauma lines were gone. Her facial swelling had receded dramatically over the past two days, revealing the high cheekbones, dark lashes, and fierce, beautiful features of the woman I loved more than life itself. Her thirty-one fractures had been set by the country’s finest orthopedic surgeons, and her vitals were strong and steady.

I sat in the chair beside her, holding her slender hand between both of mine, gently tracing the outline of her wedding ring which I had recovered from the hospital property bag and cleaned until it shone like new.

The room was quiet.

Then, I felt a faint, gentle pressure against my thumb.

My breath caught in my throat.

Tessa’s fingers twitched again, curling slightly around my palm. Her eyelids fluttered against the bright morning light, squeezing together before slowly, deliberately opening.

Her hazel eyes—clear, conscious, and filled with deep, unmistakable recognition—looked straight into mine.

A soft, ragged whisper escaped her lips.

"You... you came home."

Tears blurred my vision for the first time in ten years of brutal combat. I leaned forward, pressing my lips against her knuckles, feeling the warm, steady beat of her pulse.

"I promised you I would, baby," I choked out, my voice thick with emotion. "I will always come home to you."

Tessa tried to smile, though the healing bruises on her jaw made it tender. "Did you... did you get the video?"

"We got everything," I said, running my hand through her soft brown hair. "Victor, Dominic, the entire family. They're going away for the rest of their lives. The house is safe. The harbor is safe. No one is ever going to hurt you again."

She let out a long, peaceful sigh, her body relaxing completely into the soft pillows. "Mason?"

"He gave me the drive," I told her. "He's safe. He's starting a new life out west."

Tessa closed her eyes for a moment, letting the warmth of the morning sun wash over her face, before looking back at me with that fierce, unbreakable spark I had fallen in love with eight years ago.

"Take me home, Jack," she whispered. "Take me somewhere we can see the ocean."

I smiled, leaning down to gently kiss her forehead.

May you like

"Pack your bags, soldier," I said. "Our new life starts today."
