Chapter 11 - A CROWN FOR THE MAID

Six months later.

The summer sun reflected brilliantly off the blue waters of Narragansett Bay, bathing the sprawling lawns of the Orsini estate in warm, golden light. White roses decorated the stone balustrades, and a gentle ocean breeze carried the laughter of children across the gardens.

On the manicured grass, ten-year-old Leo Hartley was kicking a soccer ball, his cheeks flushed with healthy pink, running with all the boundless energy of a boy whose heart was beating strong and true. Beside him, Gideon Marsh was playfully attempting to block his shots, laughing heartily as the boy scored into a makeshift net.

On the wide stone terrace overlooking the lawn, Raphael stood holding a glass of iced lemonade. His right shoulder bore a faint stiffness beneath his crisp white linen shirt, but his posture was straight, commanding, and serene.

The glass french doors clicked open behind him.

Josephine stepped onto the terrace. She wore a simple, elegant ivory sundress, her long hair cascading over her shoulders, her skin glowing in the afternoon sun. On her left ring finger rested a magnificent emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the sunlight like a prism.

Raphael turned to her, his dark eyes instantly softening with an warmth he reserved for only two people in the world.

"How is he doing?" she asked, leaning against his side and looking down at her brother.

"Dr. Vance cleared him for regular school in the fall," Raphael replied, wrapping his uninjured arm around her waist and pulling her gently against his chest. "He wants to join the junior soccer league. I told Gideon to sponsor the entire regional division."

Josephine smiled, resting her head against his chest, listening to the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat beneath his shirt.

"You're spoiling him, Don Orsini."

"I am securing our future, Donna Orsini," Raphael corrected smoothly, planting a tender kiss on top of her head.

The Syndicate war was over. The Valenti family had been dismantled, the Commission reorganized under Raphael’s uncontested leadership, and the underworld had learned that the Orsini empire was untouchable because its Don was no longer fighting for power or pride—he was fighting for his family.

Mrs. Roz stepped onto the terrace carrying a tray of freshly baked pastries. She looked at the two of them standing together against the balustrade, then looked down at Leo laughing in the garden, and wiped a happy tear from her eye.

"Lunch is served in the grand dining room, Mr. and Mrs. Orsini," Mrs. Roz announced with a radiant grin.

Raphael looked down at Josephine. "Shall we?"

"Only if you promise never to let me polish that chandelier again," she teased, looking up at him with eyes full of love and mischievous light.

Raphael laughed—a rich, genuine sound that echoed across the gardens and banished the final shadows of his past forever.

"My love," he said softly, capturing her lips in a deep, passionate kiss beneath the bright New England sun, "from now on, you only illuminate this house."
