Chapter 10 - THE RESCUE AT HARBOR POINT

Raphael didn’t hesitate for a microsecond.

Before Valenti could level his revolver at Josephine's skull, Raphael fired a single, pinpoint slug from his shotgun. The round struck Valenti's gun hand, obliterating the weapon and severing two fingers in a spray of bone and blood.

Valenti shrieked, collapsing to his knees and clutching his mangled wrist.

At the same moment, the Orsini strike team opened fire with suppressed precision. Every single Valenti mercenary in the warehouse was eliminated within four seconds, falling silently to the concrete floor before they could raise their rifles.

Raphael sprinted across the warehouse floor, dropping his shotgun and dropping to his knees before Josephine. With a swift flick of his combat knife, he severed the heavy ropes binding her wrists and ankles.

The moment she was free, Josephine threw her arms around his neck, sobbing uncontrollably into the crook of his shoulder.

"Leo... the van..." she gasped.

"Gideon is already with him," Raphael said softly, wrapping his strong arms around her trembling frame and pulling her tight against his chest. "The medical team has taken over the transport. He's safe. It's over, Josephine."

Suddenly, a ragged cough sounded from the shadows near the broken pallets.

Marco Morello dragged himself up from the rubble, his face covered in blood, brandishing a concealed snub-nosed revolver. His eyes were wild with desperate, suicidal madness.

"If I go down... you go with me, Orsini!" Marco screamed, pulling the trigger.

BANG!

Raphael spun instantly, shielding Josephine’s entire body with his back.

A heavy .38-caliber bullet tore into Raphael’s right shoulder blade. He grunted, a sharp hiss of pain escaping his teeth, but he didn't fall. He pulled his secondary sidearm from his hip holster, leveled it over Josephine's shoulder without looking away from Marco, and pulled the trigger three times.

Marco’s body jerked backward, collapsing lifelessly among the shattered crates.

"Raphael!" Josephine screamed, feeling hot blood soaking through his tactical vest onto her hands. "You're shot! Oh God, you're bleeding!"

Raphael swayed slightly, but his left hand rose to cup her tear-streaked face. He looked into her eyes, his breathing heavy and ragged, but his lips curved into the faintest, gentlest smile she had ever seen on him.

"Two years..." he murmured, his voice laced with exhaustion and fierce devotion. "Two years I watched you clean my rooms, thinking I was protecting you by staying away. I was a fool."

"Don't speak, please, Raphael, you need a doctor—"

"I told you once... guilt turns ordinary decisions into crimes," Raphael whispered, his thumb brushing away her tears. "Loving you is the only decision in my life that has ever felt innocent."

His eyes closed, and his heavy frame slumped forward into her arms as Gideon and the emergency medics rushed through the smoke.
