Chapter 6 - COUNCIL OF BLOOD AND LIES

The Great Hall of the Chicago Underworld lay beneath the historic LaSalle Street tunnels—a subterranean fortress of reinforced concrete, vaulted arches, and iron chandeliers that had mediated disputes between the city's criminal elite for over a century.
Tonight, the long mahogany council table was surrounded by armed guards from the five ruling families. At the far end sat Don Victor Ashford, an arrogant patriarch with slicked-back silver hair and the cold, predatory eyes of a shark. Next to him sat his disgraced son, Dr. Julian Ashford, sweating profusely, and Camila, her eyes red-rimmed but venomous.
At the other end sat Enzo Marquetti, completely alone except for Lucian standing stoically behind his chair.
“You violate the sacred charter, Marquetti!” Don Victor roared, slamming his heavy fist onto the ancient timber. “You break a marriage contract negotiated in good faith! You throw my daughter onto the street like a common whore, and you raid my family’s medical facilities to harbor a disgraced, thieving former nurse!”
The other council lords murmured among themselves, casting wary glances at Enzo. In the underworld, contracts and face were everything. To break a betrothal on the eve of a wedding was an act of open war.
Enzo did not flinch. He leaned back in his leather chair, casually twirling an unlit cigar between his fingers.
“Are you finished, Victor?” Enzo asked mildly.
“No, I am not!” Victor sneered. “That girl, Adeline Croft, is legally indebted to the Ashford Corporation for medical fraud and property damages. You will surrender her to us tonight, along with fifty percent of the downtown port revenues as restitution for breaking the engagement, or the Ashford syndicate will declare total war on the Marquetti name!”
A tense, suffocating quiet descended over the chamber. Guns clicked off safety behind the shadows of the stone pillars.
Enzo smiled. It was a cold, terrible smile that made Julian Ashford physically shrink into his seat.
“You speak of debts, Victor,” Enzo said, rising slowly to his feet. He reached into his coat and produced a thick, leather-bound dossier, throwing it into the center of the table. It slid across the polished wood, stopping directly in front of the council’s senior arbitrator, Don Moretti. “Let us discuss the debt of the Ashford family to the High Council.”
Moretti opened the dossier, his bushy white eyebrows knitting together as he scanned the first few pages. His expression shifted from mild curiosity to dark, thundering fury.
“What is this?” Moretti demanded, glaring at Victor.
“That,” Enzo announced, his voice ringing across the vaulted stone ceiling, “is the forensic accounting of the Ashford Medical Foundation. For six years, Victor Ashford has been skimming thirty percent from the council’s joint pension and medical trust—money meant to treat our own wounded soldiers and their families.”
Murmurs of shock and outrage erupted among the assembled mob bosses.
“He didn't just steal from the poor,” Enzo continued, pointing a lethal finger at Julian Ashford. “He used that stolen blood money to cover up the malpractice of his pathetic son. Julian killed City Alderman Davis four years ago by administering four times the lethal dose of potassium, drunk on cocaine while on duty. And to protect his heir, Victor Ashford framed a brilliant triage nurse named Adeline Croft, threatening to murder her dying sister if she didn't take the blame!”
“Lies! It’s all fabrication!” Victor bellowed, his face turning an apoplectic purple. “Shoot him!”
Before Victor’s men could even draw their weapons, the heavy iron double doors of the council chamber were kicked open.
A dozen tactical operatives wearing Marquetti crests flooded the room, assault rifles raised, instantly neutralizing the Ashford guards. But it wasn't the soldiers that silenced the room.
Walking between them, dressed in a sharp, elegant navy suit with her head held high, was Adeline Croft.
She walked into the viper’s nest without a trace of fear. Her posture was commanding, her eyes blazing with four years of righteous fury. In her hands, she carried a sealed steel medical transport box.
“It isn't a fabrication, Don Moretti,” Adeline said clearly, her voice cutting through the panic. She placed the box on the table and flipped the latch. Inside lay the original encrypted hard drives from County General’s internal server room—retrieved an hour ago by Enzo’s elite cyber unit. “These contain the raw telemetry, the original doctor’s notes with Julian Ashford’s digital signature, and the audio recording of Don Victor threatening my sister’s life in the hospital stairwell.”
Julian Ashford broke. He buried his face in his hands and began to sob uncontrollably. “I’m sorry, Dad! I told you we should have gotten rid of her back then! I told you she’d come back!”

With those words, the entire council erupted into chaos. Victor drew a concealed pistol from his coat, his eyes locked on Adeline in a murderous frenzy. “You miserable bitch!”
He pulled the trigger.
