Chapter 10 - ASHES OF THE FALLEN

Six months later, the autumn leaves in Chicago turned a brilliant canopy of gold and crimson.

On the southern outskirts of the city, in a rundown industrial district far removed from the glittering penthouses of the Gold Coast, stood a decaying municipal rehabilitation center. In the damp basement laundry room, the air was thick with the stench of industrial bleach and soiled linens.

Camila Ashford stood over an enormous iron press, her face gaunt, her skin sallow and stripped of the expensive creams she had once taken for granted. Her hands, once adorned with diamond rings and flawlessly manicured nails, were red, chapped, and blistered from harsh detergents. She wore a stained, ill-fitting gray service smock.

A supervisor threw a heavy basket of dirty towels at her feet. “Move it, Ashford! You’ve got five more bins before your shift ends, and if they aren't folded by five, you don't get your meal voucher.”

Camila gritted her teeth, tears of bitter humiliation stinging her eyes as she dropped to her knees to gather the heavy, wet laundry.

On the small, static-filled television mounted in the corner of the breakroom, the evening news broadcast began. Camila looked up, wiping sweat from her forehead with the back of a bruised wrist.

The glamorous anchor’s voice echoed through the damp basement: “In local news, the prestigious Chicago Medical Society tonight formally reinstated former trauma nurse Adeline Croft with full honors, issuing a formal city apology for the wrongful revocation of her license four years ago. Furthermore, Miss Croft has been appointed Chief of Trauma Services at the newly dedicated Marquetti-Croft Medical Pavilion, funded entirely by a forty-million-dollar philanthropic endowment.”

The screen cut to footage outside the sparkling new medical center.

Stepping out into the camera flashes was nineteen-year-old Josie Croft, radiant, glowing with health, carrying a bouquet of white lilies and breathing the crisp autumn air without any tubes or assistance.

Beside her stood Adeline Croft, looking breathtakingly regal in an emerald velvet evening gown, her hair swept up, her eyes shining with quiet, unconquerable dignity.

And standing beside Adeline, his hand resting possessively, tenderly at the small of her back, was Enzo Marquetti. The most feared man in Chicago looked down at the former maid not with cold dominance, but with a look of profound, unshakeable adoration that silenced every critic in the city.

Camila stared at the screen, a strangled gasp escaping her throat. She looked down at her own ruined hands, at the gray maid’s smock clinging to her body, and finally realized the inescapable, crushing irony of her fate.

She had tried to put Adeline on her knees with a whip. And in the end, it was Camila who was doomed to spend the rest of her life scrubbing floors in the dark.
