Chapter 7 - THE POISONED INHERITANCE

By four in the morning, the storm had begun to recede into a thick, creeping coastal fog.
Using an old wooden dory hidden in the smugglers’ cave, Vincent, Adrian, and Camila navigated the rocky shallows beneath the cover of the mist, landing on the mainland coast near the Corrado family’s private boatyard.
Vincent immediately accessed the boatyard’s secure underground communications station, bypassing the compromised mansion network. Within minutes, his encrypted line connected directly to Marco Rossi, the commander of the Corrado family’s most loyal enforcement division.
“Boss?” Marco’s voice cracked over the speaker, thick with disbelief. “Donatello told the entire syndicate council that you were assassinated by Moretti hitmen in the east wing. He’s called an emergency conclave of the Five Families at St. Michael’s Cathedral for nine this morning to claim the Don’s seat!”
“I am very much alive, Marco,” Vincent said, his voice cutting through the speaker like a chilled blade. “And Donatello is about to learn the price of treason. How many men do you have that are completely loyal to my father’s name?”
“Eighty soldiers ready to spill blood on your command, Vincent. Just give the order.”
“Assemble them at the cathedral perimeter in plainclothes. Do not engage until I enter the nave,” Vincent commanded. “And Marco... prepare a secure medical team at the safehouse. I have someone who needs care.”
Vincent ended the call and turned to Camila. She was sitting on a sofa in the boatyard office, drying Mia’s hair with a warm towel while the little girl slept peacefully, clutching her stuffed otter and the silver compass.
“Camila,” Vincent said softly, stepping closer and kneeling before her so they were at eye level. “Marco’s men will escort you and Mia to a fortified safehouse outside Boston. You’ll have a private doctor, full security, and whatever your mother needs for her treatments.”
Camila shook her head firmly, her dark eyes flashing with fierce resolution. “No.”
Vincent frowned. “Camila, this conclave will be a bloodbath. Donatello is backed into a corner.”
“I’m not a fragile thing you need to hide away in a closet, Vincent,” Camila said, her voice steady and resolute. “I worked in your mansion for eight months. I know Donatello’s private security detail—they use the service entrances, they switch shifts at the quarter-hour, and his personal bodyguard, Santos, owes his mother’s medical care to my family’s old clinic. I know how to get your men past their outer checkpoint without firing a single warning shot.”
Adrian let out a low whistle, a grin spreading across his face. “She has more fire than half your capos, brother.”
Vincent stared at Camila, a mixture of awe and profound respect blooming in his chest. He reached out, gently tucking a strand of dark hair behind her ear. “You never cease to amaze me, Camila Duarte.”
“Just promise me one thing,” Camila whispered, leaning in until her forehead rested against his. “You bring my daughter’s father back in one piece.”
Vincent leaned in, sealing the promise with a deep, passionate kiss that silenced the chaos of the night. “I swear on my life.”
The plan was audacious. Adrian, wearing an identical charcoal bespoke suit tailored for Vincent, would enter the cathedral’s front doors as a decoy, drawing Donatello’s attention and forcing the traitor to publicly state his claims before the Five Families. Meanwhile, Vincent and his loyal strike team, guided by Camila’s intimate knowledge of the cathedral’s service corridors, would infiltrate the upper balconies and secure the exits.
At eight-thirty, they moved into position.
Camila and Mia were placed in an armored SUV parked two blocks away under the watchful protection of four elite Corrado guards. Vincent kissed Mia’s forehead as she stirred awake.
“Take care of Mama for me, little bird,” Vincent said gently.
“I will, Papa,” Mia whispered, holding up the compass. “The needle says you’re gonna win.”
Vincent smiled, stepping out of the vehicle and vanishing into the morning fog with Adrian.
Inside the SUV, Camila watched the fog roll over the street. Minutes ticked by in agonizing silence. Suddenly, a strange scratching sound came from beneath the vehicle’s chassis.
Before the guards in the front seat could draw their weapons, the SUV’s windows shattered inward under the impact of concussion grenades. Thick gray smoke filled the cabin, blinding and choking everyone inside.

Camila screamed, wrapping her body over Mia, but strong hands wrenched the door open and dragged them out into the mist.
