Chapter 4 - The Housekeeper's Vow

The cold air of the subterranean tunnel smelled of damp earth, salt brine, and centuries of decaying granite.

Camila scrambled down the last rungs of the iron ladder, her sneakers hitting the packed sand floor of the smuggler passage. Above them, the muffled rhythm of gunfire abruptly cut off into a chilling, absolute silence.

“Vincent!” Camila cried out, taking a step back toward the ladder, her heart seizing with violent terror.

Adrian caught her arm with his good hand, his grip firm yet remarkably gentle. “He’s holding them off, Camila. If we go back up there, we throw away the time he bought us.”

“We can’t just abandon him!” Tears welled in Camila’s eyes, hot and bitter against the freezing draft. “He’s your brother!”

“And he is the head of the Corrado family,” Adrian answered, his voice steady despite the blood soaking through his sleeve. “I have watched Vincent for twenty years from the tower. I know how he fights. He is not a man who dies easily. Look at Mia.”

Camila looked down. Mia was clinging to her mother’s collar, but she wasn’t trembling. She was staring down the dark tunnel, pointing with the rejoined compass. The tiny needle, guided by the internal mechanism unlocked by the key, spun past north and pointed directly east toward the sound of crashing waves.

“The light is calling, Mama,” Mia whispered softly. “The water man is waiting.”

“The tunnel leads directly beneath the tide pools to the lighthouse basement,” Adrian explained, pulling an emergency flashlight from a wall recess. “Donatello will have men patrolling the coastal road, but he doesn’t know about the submerged waterline passage. Our mother had it sealed before Silvio took the estate.”

They moved rapidly through the darkness. The stone ceiling dripped icy sea water onto their shoulders, the roar of the Atlantic growing louder with every step. Camila held Mia tight, her mind replaying the touch of Vincent’s hand against her face. She had started this job as an invisible maid, sweeping floors to pay for her mother’s life-saving dialysis treatments. She had never expected the feared Vincent Corrado to notice her, let alone stand between her child and a firing squad.

Halfway through the cavern, a sharp scraping sound echoed from the darkness behind them.

Adrian instantly pushed Camila behind an outcropping of jagged limestone, bringing his revolver up, his thumb pulling back the hammer. Click.

Out of the shadows emerged a towering figure, his tailored shirt torn and stained with dark crimson, a bloody tactical blade gripped in his left hand.

“Vincent!” Camila gasped, breaking cover and throwing herself into his arms before her rational mind could stop her.

Vincent caught her, pulling her flush against his chest. His heart was hammering like a war drum against her cheek. For several seconds, he simply held her, inhaling the sweet scent of lavender and vanilla that clung to her hair despite the gunpowder smoke. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, letting the raw reality of her warmth wash over his battered senses.

“I told you I would come back,” Vincent murmured, his deep voice ragged with exhaustion and fierce possession.

He pulled back just enough to inspect her, his hands checking her arms, her shoulders, before reaching down to Mia. “Is she hurt?”

“I’m okay, Papa Vincent,” Mia chirped, reaching out her tiny fingers to touch the cut on his cheekbone. “You got dirty.”

Vincent froze. The word Papa struck him harder than any bullet ever had. The formidable mafia boss, a man who had commanded thousands without flinching, felt a profound, aching tenderness crack his ribcage open. He gently took the little girl’s hand and kissed her palm.

“I’ll wash it off soon, little bird,” he said softly.

Adrian stepped forward, his eyes softening as he watched his brother. “How many did you leave alive up there?”

“None,” Vincent said, his voice hardening back into pure steel. “Donatello wasn’t in the mansion. He’s coordinating the siege from the cliffs. He brought three dozen men from the Moretti syndicate. They’ve locked down the harbor.”

“Then we have to get to the lighthouse vault immediately,” Adrian said, gesturing toward the tunnel’s exit. “If Donatello retrieves the ledger first, he will burn it, and the other four families will recognize him as the legitimate Don.”

They reached the end of the smuggler passage where a rusted iron grate opened out onto the storm-swept rocks at the base of the lighthouse. The Atlantic was in full fury. Giant black waves crashed against the jagged shore, throwing plumes of white foam thirty feet into the gale-force wind.

Above them, the old lighthouse stood like a lonely obsidian spear against the storm clouds.

Suddenly, a red laser sight danced across the wet rocks near Camila’s feet.

“Sniper! Down!” Adrian shouted, lunging forward to shove Camila and Mia into a shallow crevice in the cliffside just as a high-caliber round shattered the stone where she had stood.
