Chapter 6 - The Empire He Was Willing to Burn

By sunrise, Lorenzo had not spoken more than twenty words.
Marco and Vincent were being held under guard while attorneys contacted federal authorities through carefully chosen channels.
Mia sat inside Lorenzo’s office at Moretti International with a bandage near her hairline.
Gabriel stood near the windows.
Three lawyers occupied the conference table.
Nobody wanted to say what everyone understood.
If Lorenzo released Elena’s evidence, Marco and Vincent could be destroyed.
But Moretti International might collapse with them.
The financial records stretched back decades.
Bribery.
Illegal transfers.
Shell companies.
Off-book payments.
Some had nothing to do with Lorenzo.
Others had passed through corporations he now controlled.
Even if prosecutors eventually accepted his innocence regarding older crimes, banks could freeze accounts.
Partners could leave.
Stock values could collapse.
More than eighteen thousand legitimate employees might lose jobs.
Marco had built his protection inside innocent people.
Mia finally broke the silence.
“What would your mother want?”
Every lawyer looked uncomfortable.
Lorenzo stared at the city.
“She wanted the truth.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
He turned.
Mia stood.
“What would she want you to do?”
“I don’t know.”
“Yes, you do.”
“Mia.”
“She didn’t save those records because she wanted you to become another man trapped by them.”
Lorenzo’s expression tightened.
“My decisions affect thousands of people.”
“Then protect them.”
“And Marco walks?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“What are you saying?”
“Separate the company from the crime.”
One attorney cleared his throat.
“That could take months.”
Mia looked at him.
“Then work faster.”
Gabriel turned away to hide a smile.
The attorney did not.
Mia faced Lorenzo again.
“You spent your entire life thinking power meant holding everything.”
She touched the handmade bracelet still around his wrist.
“Maybe power is knowing what to let go.”
That afternoon, Lorenzo made a decision no Moretti leader before him had made.
He opened the books.
All of them.
He hired an independent forensic firm.
He notified regulators voluntarily.
He established an employee protection fund using two hundred million dollars of his personal assets.
He suspended every executive linked to Marco or Vincent.
Then he called an emergency board meeting.
Marco had expected Lorenzo to hide.
Instead, Lorenzo walked into the boardroom with Mia beside him.
Directors whispered.
Some looked offended that a former server had entered.
Lorenzo noticed.
“Ms. Bennett stays.”
Nobody argued.
The meeting lasted four hours.
At 6:27 p.m., Lorenzo announced that Moretti International would cooperate fully with investigators and separate from every organization or subsidiary tied to hidden criminal activity.
One board member turned pale.
“You’ll destroy the Moretti name.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“No.”
He glanced at the bracelet.
“I’m finding out whether it deserves to survive.”
News exploded within an hour.
MORETTI CEO OPENS FAMILY BOOKS.
BILLIONAIRE EMPIRE FACES FEDERAL SCRUTINY.
MORETTI SHARES PLUNGE AFTER INTERNAL CORRUPTION DISCLOSURE.
Outside company headquarters, reporters filled the sidewalk.
Mia watched from an upper window.
“This is because of me.”
Lorenzo stood behind her.
“No.”
“If I hadn't made that bracelet—”
“Someone would have found another way to come after me.”
She looked at him.
“You don’t know that.”
“I know Marco.”
Mia turned.
“And do you know yourself?”
Lorenzo was silent.
She took a breath.
“You are blowing up your entire life.”
“Yes.”
“Does that scare you?”
“Yes.”
It was the first time she had heard Lorenzo Moretti admit fear without hiding it beneath anger.
Mia smiled sadly.
“Good.”
He lifted an eyebrow.
“Good?”
“It means you’re still human.”
He looked at her for a long moment.
Then stepped closer.
“Mia.”
Her heartbeat changed.
“You have to stop doing that.”
“Doing what?”
“Saying my name like that.”
“Like what?”
“Like you’re about to make my life complicated.”
His eyes dropped briefly to her mouth.
“It already is.”
Mia should have stepped back.
She did not.
Lorenzo touched her cheek carefully, avoiding the bandage.
“Tell me to stop.”
She whispered, “I haven’t yet.”
He kissed her.
Not like the man who had walked into the cannery prepared to destroy anyone who touched her.
Not like a mafia boss.
Not like a billionaire.
Like Lorenzo.
The man whose mother had once tied eight knots around his wrist and told him forever was something you could hold.
Mia kissed him back.
Then Gabriel burst through the office door.
They separated.
Gabriel stopped.
“Oh.”
Lorenzo stared at him.
“This better be important.”
“It is.”
Gabriel placed a laptop on the desk.
“We found a second financial archive.”
Lorenzo’s expression changed.
“What?”
“Vincent had insurance.”
The file contained video, audio, documents, and photographs.
Enough to implicate politicians, judges, executives, and organized-crime figures.
But one folder was labeled BENNETT.
Mia felt sick.
Gabriel opened it.
Photographs of Evelyn.
Surveillance.
Medical appointments.
Her house.
Mia.
Dozens of pictures.
Some were years old.
“They were watching us,” Mia whispered.
Gabriel nodded.
Then another file appeared.
A video.
Recorded six weeks earlier.
Evelyn Bennett sat in her kitchen.
Across from her was Vincent Romano.
Mia covered her mouth.
The video had no sound at first.
Then audio returned.
Vincent said, “Tell me where Elena’s copy is.”
Evelyn answered, “Go to hell.”
Mia began crying.
Vincent stood.
“You should think about your granddaughter.”
Evelyn’s face changed.
“Stay away from Mia.”
“Then give me the evidence.”
Evelyn looked directly toward the hidden camera.
“No.”
The video ended.
Mia wiped her face.
“He threatened her.”
Gabriel nodded.
“We believe Evelyn died naturally. But Vincent knew she had hidden something.”
Lorenzo looked toward the screen.
“Why save the video?”
“Leverage against Marco.”
Then Gabriel opened the final document.
A scheduled email.
Vincent had arranged for the archive to be released automatically if he was arrested.
To whom?
Every major newsroom in America.
Release time:
Midnight.
Lorenzo checked the clock.
10:48 p.m.
Gabriel said, “If this leaks without context, it will look like Lorenzo personally controlled everything.”
Mia stared.
“Can you stop it?”
“We’re trying.”
Lorenzo’s phone rang.
A private security channel.
He answered.
A guard shouted through static.
“Mr. Moretti, Marco escaped transport.”
Lorenzo’s face changed.
Then the lights inside the office went out.
The building alarm screamed.
Gabriel rushed to the window.
Smoke rose from the lower floors.
Mia’s phone lit up with an incoming video call.
UNKNOWN.
She answered before Lorenzo could stop her.
Marco appeared on-screen.
Behind him was fire.
He smiled.
“Happy birthday, nephew.”
Then the camera turned.
On the screen was Mia’s future bakery location—the small storefront she had signed a lease for months earlier.
Flames poured from the windows.
Mia screamed.
Marco’s voice returned.
“You chose the girl over the empire.”
Another explosion shook the video.
“So now…”
May you like
Marco smiled.
“…watch me take both.”
