Chapter 1 - THE BIRTHDAY GIFT MONEY COULDN’T BUY

Lorenzo Moretti had spent years becoming the kind of man no one dared disappoint.
To the public, he was the billionaire CEO of Moretti International, a polished empire of hotels, investments, real estate, shipping, and international businesses. Behind closed doors, however, Lorenzo was the head of the Moretti family—a name powerful enough to make politicians return phone calls, competitors reconsider threats, and enemies disappear from rooms when he entered.
Yet there was one night every year when none of that power mattered.
His birthday.
His late mother had once made every birthday personal. When Lorenzo was a child, she never bought him extravagant gifts. She made things with her own hands so he would understand that being remembered mattered more than being impressed.
After she died, his birthdays became corporate spectacles.
On his thirty-eighth birthday, hundreds of wealthy guests filled the Moretti mansion with watches, cars, jewelry, rare artwork, private-island vacations, and gifts worth more than most people earned in a lifetime.
Lorenzo thanked them all.
He felt nothing.
Then he met Mia Bennett.
Mia was a temporary server working the party because she was saving money to open a bakery using her grandmother Evelyn’s recipes. Unlike everyone else, Mia did not flatter Lorenzo. She simply noticed that he had barely touched his dinner.
“You haven't eaten,” she told him.
When Lorenzo claimed he was not hungry, Mia quietly replied that perhaps he simply was not enjoying his own birthday.
Nobody normally spoke to Lorenzo Moretti that way.
Later that evening, Mia found an old photograph near Lorenzo’s private office. It showed Lorenzo as a young boy standing beside his mother, wearing a handmade bracelet.
Mia recognized the pattern.
Her grandmother had taught her the same knotting technique.
So Mia made Lorenzo a bracelet.
When she handed him the tiny handmade box, Lorenzo expected nothing significant.
Then he opened it.
The simple bracelet looked almost identical to one his mother had once made for him.
Mia explained that everyone else had given Lorenzo expensive objects, but nobody had given him a memory.
The gift left him speechless.
Then the evening changed again.
One of Lorenzo’s advisors arrived with evidence that someone inside his organization had been stealing millions of dollars and secretly moving assets for months.
As Lorenzo began investigating, another revelation emerged.
Mia’s grandmother Evelyn Bennett had once worked inside the Moretti household.
More importantly, years earlier, Evelyn had helped protect Lorenzo during a dangerous period in his childhood.
Before leaving, she had promised Lorenzo’s mother that if Lorenzo ever became so consumed by power that he forgot he was human, someone should remind him.
Mia knew none of it.
When Lorenzo confronted her, she admitted she had made the bracelet only because he looked lonely.
“You looked like someone who needed to be remembered,” she told him.
For the first time in years, Lorenzo felt something on his birthday besides grief.
But while he stared at the bracelet around his wrist, one disturbing question began growing in his mind.
