Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT LORENZO CHOSE MIA OVER THE MORETTI EMPIRE

Mia woke to the smell of rust and seawater.

Her wrists were tied behind a metal chair.

A single industrial lamp hung above her.

Beyond its circle of light stretched an abandoned processing floor filled with corroded machinery.

The cannery.

She tested the ropes.

Tight.

A voice came from the shadows.

“You look like Evelyn.”

Mia froze.

Marco Moretti stepped into the light.

He was sixty-seven, silver-haired, immaculately dressed, and calm enough to be terrifying.

Mia had seen him at Lorenzo’s birthday party.

He had kissed Lorenzo on both cheeks.

He had toasted Elena’s memory.

He had smiled while Mia carried champagne past his table.

“You knew my grandmother.”

Marco smiled.

“Very well.”

“Did you kill her?”

“No.”

“Did you kill Elena?”

His smile disappeared.

“Careful.”

“So that’s a yes.”

Marco pulled another chair across from her.

“You have your grandmother’s mouth too.”

“She lived to eighty-two. Maybe being annoying worked for her.”

Marco laughed.

“I understand why Lorenzo likes you.”

Mia said nothing.

“Do you know what makes men like Lorenzo dangerous?”

“The guns?”

“No. Guns are easy.”

Marco leaned closer.

“Love.”

Mia’s stomach tightened.

“When a man has nothing to lose, you cannot control him. When he has one thing to lose, you control everything.”

“You think Lorenzo loves me?”

“I think he is already making decisions he would not have made before you walked into his house.”

Mia thought about the bracelet.

The way Lorenzo had looked at her after hearing his mother’s voice.

The way he had held her after the vault attack.

“That doesn’t mean love.”

Marco smiled.

“It will.”

A door opened behind them.

Vincent Romano entered.

Mia recognized him from the birthday celebration.

The trusted advisor.

The man who had been standing beside Lorenzo hours before the theft was discovered.

Vincent looked irritated.

“You shouldn’t be talking to her.”

Marco spread his hands.

“We have time.”

“No, we don’t.”

Vincent placed a tablet on a crate.

A live video feed showed Lorenzo’s SUV approaching the waterfront.

Mia’s heart began pounding.

“He came.”

“Of course he came,” Marco said.

Vincent looked at Mia.

“He always comes for ghosts.”

Mia frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Marco stood.

“Lorenzo has spent his entire life chasing the people he could not save.”

Mia’s skin went cold.

His mother.

Maybe others.

Then Marco said something worse.

“Elena knew that too.”

Mia stared at him.

“You did kill her.”

Marco walked away.

Vincent remained.

Mia watched him.

“You gave her the medicine.”

Vincent’s face did not change.

That was answer enough.

“You stood at her funeral.”

“Yes.”

“You hugged her son.”

“Yes.”

“You’re disgusting.”

Vincent leaned close.

“Morality is a luxury purchased by people protected from consequences.”

Mia almost laughed.

“That is the stupidest rich-man sentence I have ever heard.”

His eyes hardened.

Good.

Anger made people careless.

While Vincent argued with Marco several yards away, Mia worked one wrist against a broken metal edge behind the chair.

The rope began to fray.

Outside, Lorenzo stopped his SUV near the loading dock.

Gabriel had begged him not to come alone.

So technically, Lorenzo had obeyed.

Gabriel and six security officers waited three blocks away.

Inside Lorenzo’s jacket was a fake roll of microfilm.

The real evidence had already been copied to three secure servers and delivered to attorneys.

For once, Lorenzo had chosen patience.

Not because he feared Marco.

Because Mia had told him not to waste what Evelyn had protected.

He entered the cannery.

Marco’s voice echoed through the darkness.

“Leave the weapon.”

Lorenzo placed it on the floor.

“Now the film.”

He held up a silver container.

Marco appeared on the catwalk.

Mia was beside him.

A gun against her head.

Lorenzo stopped breathing.

She looked terrified.

But alive.

“Give it to Vincent,” Marco ordered.

Vincent emerged from the lower level.

Lorenzo handed him the container.

Vincent inspected it.

Then Marco smiled.

“You always were sentimental.”

“Let her go.”

“First, we talk.”

“There is nothing to discuss.”

“Oh, there is.”

Marco descended the stairs slowly.

“Your mother almost destroyed this family.”

Lorenzo’s voice dropped.

“My mother discovered you were stealing.”

“Your mother discovered how the family survived.”

“You poisoned her.”

Marco looked at Vincent.

Vincent looked away.

That tiny movement gave Lorenzo his answer.

Something inside him nearly broke.

Mia saw it.

“Lorenzo.”

His eyes lifted to hers.

She shook her head.

Not here.

Not like this.

Marco noticed.

“Oh, beautiful.”

He smiled.

“She already knows how to control you.”

Lorenzo’s expression changed.

“No.”

Marco frowned.

“She reminds me what control is.”

Lorenzo looked at Mia.

For the first time in his adult life, he understood the difference between restraint and weakness.

His father had called restraint cowardice.

Marco called mercy vulnerability.

But his mother had known better.

Strength without control was merely another prison.

Lorenzo looked back at Marco.

“I copied everything.”

Vincent froze.

“What?”

“The film. The tapes. The accounts.”

Marco’s face darkened.

“Where?”

“Everywhere.”

Vincent tore open the silver container.

Empty.

“You idiot!” he shouted.

Marco grabbed Mia and pressed the gun harder against her temple.

“Then she dies.”

Mia’s rope snapped.

She dropped.

The gun fired.

Lorenzo moved.

The bullet struck the metal beam behind Mia.

She rolled behind a crate.

Lorenzo slammed Vincent into the wall.

Marco fired again.

Glass exploded.

Then Gabriel’s team entered from three directions.

“Drop the weapon!”

Marco grabbed Mia again.

But this time Mia was ready.

She drove the broken chair spindle into his hand.

Marco screamed.

The gun fell.

Lorenzo crossed the distance between them.

One punch dropped Marco to his knees.

Another would have shattered his face.

Lorenzo raised his fist.

Then stopped.

Mia stood beside him.

Blood on her cheek.

Eyes steady.

“Don’t become him.”

Lorenzo looked down at his uncle.

Thirty years of lies.

His mother’s death.

His childhood fear.

His stolen family.

Every instinct demanded revenge.

But Mia was right.

He lowered his hand.

Sirens sounded outside.

Marco began laughing.

“You think this ends because you spared me?”

Lorenzo looked at him.

“No.”

Marco’s smile widened.

“You still don’t know the worst part.”

Gabriel handcuffed Vincent.

“What worst part?”

Marco looked directly at Lorenzo.

“Ask your father.”

Lorenzo went still.

“My father is dead.”

“Yes.”

Marco’s voice became almost gentle.

“But before Carlo died, he learned exactly what Vincent and I had done to Elena.”

Lorenzo’s face went blank.

Marco leaned closer.

“And he protected us.”

The words hit harder than any bullet.

Mia stared at Lorenzo.

Marco laughed again.

“Your father chose the Moretti empire over justice for your mother.”

Lorenzo said nothing.

Then Marco delivered the final blow.

“And if you expose everything Evelyn saved, you won’t just destroy me.”

His eyes gleamed.

“You will destroy every legitimate company your father built.”

Hotels.

Thousands of employees.

Investments.

Families dependent on Moretti International.

Marco smiled.

“So decide, nephew.”

May you like

“Your mother…”

“Or your empire.”
