Chapter 7 - THE PATERNITY TRUTH UNVEILED

A soft, ragged gasp slipped from Eliza’s throat as her consciousness slowly fought its way through the heavy fog of anesthesia.
Adrian was on his feet instantly. He gently leaned over the bed, his voice a soothing, tender melody. “Easy, my love. Don't fight the tube. You’re safe. You’re at Whitmore Medical Center, and you are completely safe.”
Eliza’s hazel eyes opened wide, swimming with confusion and panic. But as her gaze focused on Adrian’s face—the familiar lines around his eyes, the gentle curve of his lips, the raw love radiating from his expression—the tension melted from her body. Tears spilled from the corners of her eyes, soaking into the white pillowcase.
Adrian signaled to the respiratory therapist. “Let’s extubate her. Her arterial blood gas is perfect, and her spontaneous tidal volumes are well above baseline.”
With practiced efficiency, the therapist carefully removed the breathing tube. Eliza coughed softly, and Adrian immediately offered her a small sponge soaked in ice water to soothe her parched throat.
“Adrian...?” Eliza’s voice was barely a whisper, hoarse and trembling with disbelief. “Am I... in heaven?”
“No, sweetheart,” Adrian choked back a sob, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. “You’re right here with me. Where you should have been for the last ten years.”
Eliza’s eyes suddenly widened with sheer, primal terror. She tried to sit up, her hands clutching at Adrian’s white coat. “Maya! Where is my baby?! Where is Maya?! She was alone in the apartment—she didn't have any food—I couldn't get up to feed her—”
“Shhh, look over there,” Adrian whispered gently, turning Eliza’s chin toward the corner of the room.
Curled up in a large plush armchair, wrapped in a soft white hospital blanket, was Maya. She was fast asleep, clutching her pink coin purse and the golden locket tightly in her small hands, breathing peacefully in the warm morning light.
Eliza collapsed back against the pillows, weeping so intensely that the telemetry monitor registered a brief spike in her heart rate. “She found you... my brave little girl found you...”
“She saved your life, Eliza,” Adrian said, his tears finally breaking free and streaming down his face. “She walked into my lobby, stood before the entire board of directors, and refused to leave until I heard your name.”
Adrian paused, his voice trembling as he reached into his pocket and placed the two halves of the golden locket onto the palm of Eliza’s hand.
“Why didn't you tell me, Eliza?” he asked, his heart aching with ten years of lost time. “Why did you run away when you were carrying my child?”
Eliza closed her eyes as fresh tears traced the hollows of her cheeks. “Ten years ago, Evelyn’s father, Donald Sterling, came to my laboratory late at night. He had forged documents from the FDA alleging that my synthetic valve prototype had caused fatal embolisms in animal trials. He told me that if I didn't sign over the exclusive patent rights to Sterling BioTech and disappear from Boston, he would use his political influence to strip you of your surgical license and have you prosecuted as my co-conspirator.”
Adrian’s jaw clenched with terrifying fury. “I would have fought them, Eliza! I would have given up medicine, given up every cent of the Whitmore inheritance just to be with you!”
“You were born to heal people, Adrian,” Eliza whispered, lifting her weak hand to touch his cheek. “I couldn't let them destroy your gift. Two weeks after I fled to Chicago, I found out I was pregnant. I worked two jobs—cleaning offices at night, tutoring by day—just to give Maya a life. But six months ago, Donald Sterling found me again. He realized that my old research held the key to fixing the deadly flaws in their commercial valves. When I refused to help them cover up their defective products, someone started breaking into our apartment... and then I fell sick. No hospital in the public system would admit me. Every time I gave my real name, the system flagged me as ineligible.”
“Because they blacklisted you,” Adrian said, his voice deadly and cold. “They tried to murder you, Eliza. But it is over now. Richard Vance and Evelyn Sterling are in police custody. The Massachusetts State Police and the FBI have just raided Sterling BioTech headquarters.”
Just then, a tiny voice broke through the quiet room.
“Mama?”
Maya sat up in the armchair, rubbing her sleepy hazel eyes. When she saw Eliza sitting up, smiling through her tears, the little girl dropped her blanket and sprinted across the room, scrambling onto the side of the bed.
“Mama! You woke up!” Maya cried, burying her face into Eliza’s neck.
“My sweet, brave angel,” Eliza wept, wrapping her arms around her daughter. “You brought your father to me.”
Maya looked up at Adrian, who was standing beside the bed with his arms wrapped protectively around both of them. “Are we going to stay together now, Daddy?”
May you like
Adrian leaned down, kissing Maya’s forehead and then pressing his lips tenderly against Eliza’s trembling mouth.
“We are never, ever going to be apart again,” Adrian vowed.
