Chapter 6 - A RACE AGAINST THE FLATLINE

The DNA compatibility report was an absolute, undisputed 99.998% biological match: Maya Whitmore was his daughter. But it wasn't the paternity result that caused Adrian’s breath to seize in his throat.
Attached to the genetic readout was Eliza’s baseline blood panel drawn during intake, cross-referenced with the hospital's central pharmacy dispensing logs from the past six hours.
Eliza had not just contracted bacterial endocarditis from an untreated dental abscess as the charity ward chart claimed. Her blood contained trace levels of a specialized synthetic immunosuppressive compound—*ImmuDox-7*—a proprietary drug manufactured exclusively by Sterling BioTech, the pharmaceutical conglomerate owned by Evelyn Sterling’s family.
Someone had been slowly, systematically poisoning Eliza’s immune system over the past six months, ensuring that an ordinary infection would turn into a lethal, untreatable catastrophe.
“My God,” Adrian breathed, the horrific puzzle pieces clicking into place with sickening clarity.
Before he could process the full terror of the discovery, a piercing red Code Blue alert flashed across his executive terminal:
EMERGENCY INTRUDER / CARDIAC CRISIS — CTICU BED 1 (PATIENT: ELIZA MERRITT). CENTRAL LINE PRESSURE COLLAPSE.
Adrian sprinted from his office, leaping down the emergency staircase three steps at a time, descending onto the fourth-floor intensive care unit like a thunderbolt.
He kicked open the heavy double doors of the CTICU.
Inside Room 1, Dr. Richard Vance was standing over Eliza’s central venous catheter port, holding an empty 50cc syringe. Eliza’s monitor was screaming in wild distress—her heart rate skyrocketing to 190 beats per minute as ventricular tachycardia rippled across the digital display.
“What are you doing to her?!” Adrian roared.
Vance jumped backward, dropping the plastic syringe onto the floor. It rolled across the tile, leaving a trail of clear liquid. “Adrian! I was... I was simply administering a supplemental dose of anti-arrhythmic lidocaine! Her vitals became unstable!”
Adrian lunged forward, grabbing Vance by the throat and slamming him against the reinforced glass wall of the ICU room. The impact rattled the entire partition.
“That is not lidocaine!” Adrian snarled, his eyes blazing with murderous fury. He picked up the discarded syringe with his free hand and held it up to the light, reading the residue label on the plunger. “Potassium chloride concentrated bolus! You tried to stop her heart while she was recovering from bypass!”
“You’re insane! I’m the Chief Medical Officer!” Vance gagged, his face turning purple under Adrian’s iron grip.
“Code Team! Get in here now!” Adrian bellowed, tossing Vance to the floor like a sack of garbage. “Push twenty units of regular insulin and fifty milliliters of fifty-percent dextrose immediately! We have to drive that potassium back into the intracellular space before her myocardium arrests! Hook up emergent hemodialysis!”
The elite CTICU nursing staff swarmed into the room, their movements rapid and disciplined. Within ninety seconds, the insulin-glucose rescue protocol was infusing through Eliza’s femoral line, neutralizing the lethal potassium surge just as the monitor touched the critical threshold of ventricular fibrillation.
Slowly, miraculously, the erratic spikes on the monitor smoothed out into a stable, rhythmic wave.
Eliza’s chest rose and fell evenly under the mechanical ventilator.
Adrian turned slowly toward Vance, who was scrambling to his feet near the doorway. Standing just outside the glass partition was Evelyn Sterling, her face pale with horror as she realized their plan had utterly disintegrated.
“Security!” Adrian shouted through the intercom system. “Place Dr. Richard Vance and Evelyn Sterling under immediate citizen’s arrest for attempted capital murder and medical sabotage! Lock down all executive exits!”
“You can’t do this, Adrian!” Evelyn shrieked, backing away down the corridor as two armed hospital security officers moved in to block her path. “My family owns fifty percent of the Whitmore holding debt! If you arrest me, my father will call in every loan and bankrupt this entire hospital by midnight!”
“Let him try,” Adrian said, his voice cold as liquid nitrogen. “I will burn this entire empire to the ground before I let you touch my family again.”
As security pinned Vance to the ground and cuffed Evelyn’s wrists behind her back, the legal department and Boston Police sirens could already be heard wailing in the distance, speeding across the Charles River Bridge.
Adrian turned his back on the traitors and walked back into the ICU room.

He pulled a chair to Eliza’s bedside, sat down, and took her fragile, warm hand into both of his. For the next twelve hours, through the dark hours of the stormy night, Adrian never left her side for a single second. He personally monitored every drop of fluid, every microgram of medication, and every breath delivered by the ventilator.
At 6:15 AM, as the first rays of golden November sunlight broke through the clouds and illuminated the Charles River outside the window, Eliza’s eyelids fluttered.
