Chapter 10 - ELIZA OPENS HER EYES

Three days later, the storm had completely passed over Massachusetts. The morning sky over the Charles River was an expanse of crystal blue, with crisp golden autumn leaves dancing across the hospital’s private garden promenade.
In the penthouse recovery suite, the atmosphere was filled with warmth, laughter, and the sweet scent of fresh lavender and honeysuckle.
Eliza was sitting up in a comfortable armchair by the panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, dressed in a soft cream cashmere sweater. Her cheeks had regained their natural, healthy rose color, and her hazel eyes sparkled with the brilliant intellect and warmth that had first captured Adrian’s soul a decade ago.
The door clicked open, and Adrian walked into the room.
He had completely discarded his stiff administrative suits, wearing comfortable dark denim and a soft navy sweater. In his hands, he carried a silver tray with three cups of steaming hot chocolate, topped with generous mounds of whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
“Room service for the two most important ladies in the universe,” Adrian announced with a broad, boyish grin.
Maya, who was sitting on the rug drawing a colorful picture of a big white house with a garden, jumped up and clapped her hands. “With extra marshmallows?!”
“Is there any other way to drink hot chocolate?” Adrian laughed, setting the tray down and scooping Maya up into his arms, spinning her around until she giggled with pure joy.
Eliza watched them, her heart overflowing with a peace so profound it brought sweet tears to her eyes. “You’re spoiling her, Dr. Whitmore.”
“I have seven years of birthdays, Christmases, and bedtime stories to make up for,” Adrian replied softly, setting Maya gently back on her feet. “Spoiling her is now my full-time specialty.”
He walked over to Eliza’s chair, pulling up an ottoman and sitting directly in front of her. He took her soft, warm hands into his own, gently kissing each of her knuckles where the old IV bruises were already fading away.
“How does your new heart feel today, Dr. Merritt?” he asked softly.
Eliza placed Adrian’s hand directly over her chest. Beneath his palm, her reconstructed valve beat with a powerful, flawless, rhythmic resonance: Thump-thump... thump-thump... thump-thump.
“It beats for you, Adrian,” she whispered, gazing deep into his hazel eyes. “Just like it did the very first day I met you in the anatomy lab twelve years ago.”
“We’re going home tomorrow, Eliza,” Adrian said, his voice thick with emotion. “I had the old seaside estate in Marblehead completely renovated. There’s a state-of-the-art biological research laboratory built into the east wing for you, overlooking the ocean cliffs. And in the west wing... there’s a bedroom with a balcony and a sky-lit ceiling for Maya.”
Maya dropped her crayons and ran over, leaning her elbows on Adrian’s knee. “Can I have a puppy, Daddy? A golden one with floppy ears?”
Adrian chuckled, ruffling her soft blond hair. “A golden puppy is already waiting for you at the house, sweetheart. His name is Barnaby.”
Maya squealed with delight, throwing her arms around both of their necks, pulling their three heads together in a tight, unbreakable circle of love.

As the morning sun bathed the room in radiant golden light, Eliza looked at Adrian, her eyes shining with absolute trust. “Thank you for never giving up on our promise, Adrian.”
“Our promise was written in stone, Eliza,” Adrian whispered, leaning forward to press his forehead against hers. “And our story is just getting started.”
