Chapter 9 - SIEGE OF THE STEEL TOWER

Midnight at the Calumet River was colder than death.

The monolithic concrete silos loomed against the smog-choked Chicago skyline like giant tombstones. Rain poured down in freezing sheets as Evelyn, Grace, and I infiltrated the lower drainage pipes beneath Dock 14.

Vance’s mercenaries were positioned on the catwalks four stories above the silo floor, their laser sights cutting through the misty air like red spiderwebs.

"I count forty-two armed hostiles," Grace whispered through the bone-conduction comms. "Twelve on the ground floor, twenty on the middle gantry, ten on the sniper nests near the roof."

"Evelyn, take the high gantry," I instructed quietly. "Grace and I will enter through the primary blast doors. Once the lights go out, trigger the acoustic resonance generators."

"Understood," Evelyn vanished into the shadows, scaling the exterior maintenance ladder with feline agility.

I took a deep breath, looked down at Grace, and squeezed her shoulder. "Ready, sweetheart?"

"I was born ready, Dad," Grace whispered, her grip on her tactical baton firm and unwavering.

I kicked open the heavy iron blast doors and stepped directly into the center of the main silo arena. The spotlights instantly flared, blindingly bright, pinning me in a cage of white light.

Marcus Vance stood on the elevated command platform fifty feet above, surrounded by his elite bodyguards.

"Julian Caruso!" Vance's voice echoed through the massive chamber over the loudspeaker. "The great lion of Lake Forest, finally brought to his knees! Where is the little blind girl? Did you leave her in the car to die alone?"

"I'm right here," Grace's clear, steady voice rang out as she stepped out from behind my coat, walking calmly into the center of the spotlight.

Vance laughed hysterically. "A blind child with a stick! This is the great Caruso dynasty!"

"Now, Evelyn!" I shouted.

High above, Evelyn shot out the main transformer cluster with a high-caliber armor-piercing round. The entire silo complex instantly plunged into pitch-black darkness, and simultaneously, Evelyn activated three acoustic flash-devices attached to the metal support beams.

The high-frequency sound wave tore through the silo like an acoustic hurricane. To normal ears, the piercing frequency caused instant disorientation, severe vertigo, and agonizing inner-ear pain. Vance's mercenaries dropped their weapons, screaming and clutching their bleeding ears in absolute agony.

But Grace had tuned her bone-conduction filters to cancel the exact harmonic frequency.

To her, the silo became a crystal-clear map of helpless, stumbling targets.

"Move!" Grace commanded.

We tore through the ground floor like reapers. I fired with surgical precision into the disoriented mercenaries, clearing the path while Grace moved with fluid, lethal grace. A mercenary lunged at her blindly; Grace ducked under his wild swing, swept his feet with her baton, and delivered a devastating palm strike to his solar plexus that sent him crashing unconscious to the concrete floor.

Evelyn rained suppressed fire down from the catwalks, systematically neutralizing the sniper nests one by one.

Within four minutes, the ground floor was silent.
