Chapter 5 - THE RAT AT THE BANQUET

The total blackout hit the ground floor like a physical blow.
In the pitch-black corridors of the mansion, night-vision goggles became a fatal liability. With the breaker tripped, Evelyn hurled three high-intensity infrared flare canisters down the grand staircase. The intense infrared radiation instantly blinded the mercenaries' thermal and night-vision tubes with searing whiteouts, forcing them to rip the goggles from their faces in agonizing disorientation.
In the darkness, the mansion belonged entirely to Grace.
"First hallway, on your left," Grace whispered over the comms link. "One hostile reloading."
I stepped through the doorway, leveling my weapon by Grace's directional guidance, and fired twice. A body crumpled against the wainscoting.
"Right corner, duck!" Grace commanded.
Evelyn dropped flat as a spray of 9mm rounds chewed through the drywall above her head. Grace tapped my shoulder: "He's firing from behind the marble bust. Three paces forward, shoot through the plaster at chest height."
I fired four rounds blindly into the wall. A heavy thud followed, followed by the clatter of an assault rifle falling onto hardwood.
We cleared the east wing in under ninety seconds, moving with the terrifying efficiency of a three-person strike team guided by a blind child's supreme acoustic mapping. Every creak of the floorboards, every ragged breath, every click of a rifle safety became a death sentence for Mateo’s hit squad.
We reached the grand foyer just as Mateo Rossi was scrambling toward the front double doors, his tailored Italian suit spattered with mud and dust.
"Mateo!" I called out.
The consigliere froze, spinning around with his chrome-plated revolver raised. But in the dim moonlight filtering through the shattered skylight, he saw the three of us stepping out of the shadows. Evelyn covered the perimeter, while Grace stood flanking my right side, her baton held steady at her hip.
"Julian..." Mateo stammered, his eyes wide with frantic desperation. "You don't understand... Moretti threatened my family. They gave me no choice!"
"You had a choice when Helena died twelve years ago," Evelyn said coldly, keeping her weapon trained on his chest. "You sold the route of her convoy to the Moretti family for five million dollars and a seat on the High Council."
Mateo's face drained of whatever color was left. "You... you were the operative in the van."
"She was," I said, taking two slow steps toward my oldest friend. "And the girl you called a blind liability just dismantled your entire mercenary strike team in complete darkness."
"Julian, please!" Mateo pleaded, dropping to his knees. "I can give you Moretti! I know where his central vault is! I know where his private command bunker is located!"
"I already know where it is," Grace interrupted, her voice ringing clear and devoid of mercy. "You said it on your radio two minutes ago. The old grain silo complex at the Calumet River. Dock 14."
Mateo stared at my twelve-year-old daughter as if looking at an avenging ghost.
I raised my Kimber .45. "You violated the only rule that mattered in this house, Mateo. You brought the war to my child."

A single gunshot echoed through the ruined grand foyer, silencing the traitor forever.
