Chapter 8 - The Crucible

By dawn, we reached the Gary steel mills—a sprawling, rusted labyrinth of abandoned industrial blast furnaces and corrugated metal hangars right on the edge of Lake Michigan.

Deep inside the subterranean maintenance basement, Helena's hidden bunker remained untouched. Wall-to-wall tactical monitors, weapon lockers, and encrypted communication servers hummed to life as Evelyn entered the master override codes.

For the first time in twenty-four hours, we were safe—if only for a brief moment.

I sat on an ammo crate, letting Evelyn stitch the laceration on my forehead while Grace explored the room with her fingertips, cataloging every piece of equipment.

"You should have told me about Helena's network," I said quietly, looking at Evelyn in the harsh halogen light.

"Helena forbade it," Evelyn replied, tightening the stitch with surgical precision. "She knew that if you knew the truth, your instinct would be to go to war immediately and burn down every family in the Five Syndicates. You would have gotten yourself killed before Grace was old enough to hold her own."

"She's twelve, Evelyn," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "She shouldn't have to hold her own."

"Look at her, Julian," Evelyn murmured, nodding toward Grace.

Across the room, Grace had dismantled a standard Beretta 92FS field pistol down to its component pins, springs, and slide using only her sense of touch—and was now reassembling it in under twenty seconds. When the slide locked into place with a crisp, metallic click, she racked the chamber smoothly and engaged the safety.

"She is not a victim, Julian," Evelyn said. "She is the sharpest weapon this family has ever produced. And she is the only one who can navigate the Calumet Silo complex without getting us all killed."

Suddenly, the red emergency monitor on the central console flashed to life. A live video feed from an anonymous proxy hacked directly into our bunker's secure receiver.

The screen displayed the cold, scarred face of Marcus Vance—the ruthless warlord who controlled the Moretti cartel and the puppet master behind Mateo's betrayal.

"Good morning, Julian," Vance said, his voice laced with venomous amusement. "I must congratulate you on surviving Lake Forest. But while you were hiding in your hole in Indiana, my men took over the Chicago Board of Trade and seized every asset under your name. You are a king with no kingdom."

I stepped in front of the camera, my eyes burning with lethal intent. "I don't care about the kingdom, Vance. I'm coming for your head."

"Then come to Dock 14 at the Calumet Silos," Vance sneered. "Come alone, or I will order my men to start executing every loyalist soldier and family associated with the Caruso name across all four corners of this city."

The feed cut to black.

"It's an obvious trap," Evelyn said, checking the battery levels on her tactical gear. "He has fifty men waiting inside those silos."

"I know," I replied, racking the bolt of a tactical shotgun. "Which is why we aren't going to play by his rules."

Grace walked over to the center table, resting her hands on the blueprints of the Calumet Silos. "The silos are giant acoustic echo chambers. If we control the sound, we control the entire battlefield."
