Chapter 8 - The Hidden Safe in Durango

Early Wednesday morning, twenty-four hours before the decisive shareholder vote, Jonathan’s chief investigator received a secure encrypted transmission.

The final piece of physical evidence—the original, unedited digital storage core containing the Cameron Parish control-room telemetry and Thomas Carter’s handwritten field notes—was stored in a commercial safety deposit box inside an old mining bank in Durango, Colorado.

“Marcus’s hackers have been trying to breach the bank’s digital logs since dawn,” Jonathan told me as we prepared to leave. “We need to retrieve the physical drive before his legal team files an emergency injunction to seize the vault.”

We left Noah and Sofia at the estate under the direct, armed protection of Jonathan’s most trusted security team and Mrs. Gable. I kissed both children goodbye, promising Noah that when we returned that evening, the shadows would be gone forever.

We flew to Durango on Jonathan’s private turboprop aircraft, landing at a remote airfield nestled in the San Juan Mountains. Within forty-five minutes, we were inside the stone-pillared vault of the historic First National Bank of Durango.

The bank manager, an elderly gentleman who had known my father under his alias, led us to safety box 414.

Jonathan inserted the brass key Thomas had given him two years prior. With a heavy metallic click, the lock turned.

Inside the steel box lay a waterproof Pelican case. When Jonathan opened it, my breath caught.

There was a heavy military-grade external hard drive, five micro-cassette tapes labeled with dates from fifteen years ago, and a thick leather-bound journal. On the front of the journal, in my father’s unmistakable block lettering, was written:

For my daughter Emily. For the truth.

I held the journal to my chest, weeping quietly in the cold vault. The ghost that had haunted our lives for fifteen years was finally speaking.

“We have everything,” Jonathan said, his eyes flashing with grim satisfaction as he secured the drive inside his briefcase. “This is the complete forensic trail. Marcus Reeves is finished.”
