Chapter 10 - The Proxy Showdown

The grand ballroom of the Reeves Tower in downtown Denver was packed with hundreds of institutional investors, major shareholders, industry journalists, and corporate board members. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, but the atmosphere inside the hall was suffocatingly tense.
Marcus Reeves stood at the central podium, radiating smug, triumphant arrogance.
“As you all know,” Marcus announced smoothly into the microphone, “under section 4B of the family charter, my nephew Jonathan’s failure to establish a lawful family trust by midnight today defaults the controlling fifty-one percent block to my management group. I now move for an immediate vote to ratify my appointment as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.”
“The motion is out of order,” a clear, resonant voice rang across the auditorium.
The heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.
Jonathan walked down the central aisle in a bespoke midnight-blue suit, his presence commanding absolute silence from the room.
And walking beside him, dressed in an elegant emerald-green silk gown, wearing the Reeves family emerald on my finger and carrying the black leather portfolio, was me.
Murmurs erupted across the room as cameras began flashing wildly.
Marcus gripped the sides of the podium, his face turning an ugly shade of mottled red. “Jonathan! This is an executive shareholder meeting. You cannot parade your hired escorts into a corporate proceeding!”
“This is Emily Carter Reeves,” Jonathan declared, taking the microphone at the secondary podium. “My lawful wife, legal co-trustee of the Reeves Family Trust, and the sole surviving heir of Thomas Carter.”
A collective gasp rippled through the older board members who recognized the name.
I stepped up to the microphone, opening the portfolio and placing the certified records onto the high-resolution digital projection console.
Immediately, the massive screens flanking the ballroom lit up with high-resolution scans of the original Cameron Parish safety logs, encrypted offshore transaction receipts bearing Marcus’s personal signature, and certified forensic voice recordings recovered from the Durango vault.
“Fifteen years ago, Marcus Reeves sabotaged the Cameron Parish rig to hide twelve million dollars in embezzlement, attempting to murder my father and Jonathan Reeves,” I spoke clearly into the microphone, my voice echoing across the hushed hall. “For fifteen years, he has illegally collected royalties on my father’s subsea safety patents. As co-trustees representing fifty-one percent of the voting shares, Jonathan and I vote to immediately remove Marcus Reeves from all corporate offices and refer this entire evidentiary dossier to the United States Department of Justice.”
Before Marcus could scream an objection, the side doors of the ballroom opened.
Six armed special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by representatives from the Department of the Interior, walked up the steps to the stage.
“Marcus Reeves,” the lead agent said, holding up an unsealed federal arrest warrant. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate sabotage, and conspiracy to commit murder. Place your hands behind your back.”
May you like
The ballroom descended into an uproar of flashing cameras and shouting journalists as Marcus was handcuffed and led off the stage, his empire crumbling to dust before the world.
