Chapter 6 - The Lion’s Den

The fragile peace of the estate was shattered at ten o'clock the following morning.

I was sitting in the sunny breakfast nook watching Sofia happily paint with watercolors while Noah assembled a wooden train set on the rug. The sound of heavy tires crunching on the gravel driveway announced an uninvited guest.

A sleek silver Bentley Continental pulled up in front of the main portico. A tall, silver-haired man in his late fifties stepped out, accompanied by two stern men in dark suits carrying leather briefcases.

“Marcus,” Jonathan muttered, stepping out from his study in a tailored navy suit. His jaw was set, his posture radiating lethal calm.

Marcus Reeves strolled into the grand foyer unannounced, his smile polished and venomous. He possessed the aristocratic features of the Reeves lineage, but his dark eyes were cold, predatory, and restless.

“Jonathan, my dear nephew,” Marcus said, his voice dripping with condescending charm. “I heard a rumor that you brought guests into the family compound. With the board convening in forty-eight hours, I assumed you would be preparing your concession speech rather than entertaining strays.”

Jonathan stepped directly in front of the archway leading to the breakfast room. “You are trespassing on private residential property, Marcus. State your business and leave.”

Marcus’s eyes shifted past Jonathan’s shoulder, locking onto me as I stood up from the breakfast table. His smile froze for a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine shock crossing his features before he regained his composure.

“Well, well,” Marcus sneered, pulling a pair of gold-rimmed reading glasses from his pocket. “Emily Carter. It seems my investigators were looking in the wrong motels along the Kansas border.”

“Emily is my wife, Marcus,” Jonathan stated with thunderous clarity. “We were legally wed yesterday evening. The certificate has been registered with the Secretary of State, and the co-trustee filings are already lodged with probate court.”

Marcus’s face darkened, the aristocratic veneer cracking to reveal raw fury. “A sham marriage to a penniless runaway! Do you honestly believe the board will accept this farce? I will have my attorneys challenge this fraudulent union before noon!”

I walked forward, stopping squarely at Jonathan’s side. I looked Marcus directly in his cold, cruel eyes without flinching.

“My father sent his regards, Mr. Reeves,” I said, my voice steady as steel. “And he kept all the inspection logs from Cameron Parish.”

Marcus turned pale. His hands twitched slightly at his sides before he let out a harsh, bitter laugh. “You’re playing a dangerous game, little girl. Both of you.”

He turned on his heel and stormed out of the mansion, the heavy oak doors slamming behind him like a gunshot.
