Chapter 8 - THE BOARDROOM PURGE

The glass-and-steel monolith of Ashford Meridian’s global headquarters rose fifty stories above Market Street, gleaming under a sharp autumn sun. Protesters, paparazzi, and financial journalists clogged the sidewalks, screaming questions as a black town car pulled up to the private executive entrance.

I stepped out of the vehicle wearing a tailored midnight-blue suit, my hair swept up into an elegant, immaculate chignon, dark glasses concealing any lingering trace of fatigue. Flanking me were Gabriel, Sarah Lin, and a team of six federal forensic accountants.

When the private elevator doors opened on the fiftieth floor, the executive boardroom fell into dead, suffocating silence.

Twelve board members sat around the forty-foot marble table, their faces pale, their expressions panicked. At the head of the table sat Richard Ashford, Victor’s arrogant uncle, who had spent decades collecting dividends while looking the other way.

And sitting beside him, dressed in an impeccably tailored cream blazer, was Celeste Rowan.

She looked up as I entered, her jaw dropping, the color completely draining from her cheeks. She had clearly expected a traumatized, bedridden invalid weeping over a lost child, not an apex predator walking into the room with an army of federal prosecutors.

"Helena," Richard cleared his throat, standing up nervously. "We... we were told you were incapacitated at Children's Hospital. We express our deepest sympathies for the unfortunate situation regarding Victor, but this board must move forward with an emergency vote to appoint interim leadership."

"Sit down, Richard," I said, my voice quiet, clear, and commanding.

I walked to the head of the table. Richard hesitated, looked at the federal agents standing behind me, and slowly sank back into his leather chair.

I turned my gaze onto Celeste. She tried to maintain her signature poised, media-trained smile, but her trembling hands gave her away.

"You have no right to be here, Helena," Celeste spoke up, her voice quivering slightly despite her effort to sound haughty. "You may be Victor's estranged wife, but I am carrying his unborn child. Under the Delaware corporate code, until the criminal charges against Victor are resolved, his personal proxy reverts to his direct lineal descendants."

"You really should have read your employment contract before you tried to steal my family, Celeste," Sarah Lin interjected, stepping forward and dropping a heavy stack of documents onto the glass table directly in front of her.

"What is this?" Celeste gasped.

"That," I said coldly, "is a formal termination notice for gross moral turpitude, embezzlement, and corporate espionage, issued by the office of the Majority Trustee."

"You can't fire me!" Celeste shrieked, standing up so fast her chair knocked against the glass behind her. "My brand generates forty percent of your lifestyle division's revenue! My child is an Ashford!"

"Your child," I said, leaning over the table until my eyes were inches from hers, "has no legal claim to this company. Under the Ashford Family Covenant of 1978, only children born of a lawful marriage recognized by the commonwealth may claim trust assets. But more importantly, Celeste... your brand is finished."

I signaled to Gabriel, who activated the massive video display mounted on the boardroom wall.

Instantly, audio recordings from Victor’s private consultation with Dr. Kessler played through the room's surround-sound speakers.

“The transfer is scheduled for tonight... She thinks she’s taking him to a specialized pediatric clinic in Boston... Helena will never know our son took his first breath.”

Then came Celeste’s unmistakable voice: “Make sure that child is out of the country before the board convenes on Monday... my baby gets everything.”

The board members gasped, several covering their faces in sheer horror.

"Those recordings, along with the wire transfers showing you funneled two million dollars from corporate marketing funds to pay off Dr. Kessler's Zurich mortgage, were delivered to the Department of Justice thirty minutes ago," I continued, watching Celeste’s knees tremble. "There are four FBI agents waiting for you in the lobby, Celeste. They have an arrest warrant for wire fraud and interstate conspiracy."

Celeste sank into her chair, her breathing shallow, clutching her stomach as tears began to cut tracks through her expensive foundation.

"Please, Helena," she whispered, her voice cracking into a desperate whimper. "Think of the baby. He’s innocent."

"He is innocent," I replied, my voice devoid of mercy. "Which is why I have already petitioned the family court to place your child in protective custody the moment he is born. A woman facing twenty years in a federal penitentiary is hardly fit to raise an Ashford."
