Chapter 7 - THE CRUMBLING EMPIRE

By 6:00 AM, St. Catherine’s Medical Center was surrounded by twenty-two news vans, satellite dishes, and a swarm of federal agents carrying cardboard boxes out of the executive administrative offices.
The story had exploded across global media like a detonation.
BILLIONAIRE VICTOR ASHFORD ARRESTED IN MEDICAL MUTILATION AND INFANT KIDNAPPING SCHEME.
ASHFORD MERIDIAN BOARD CONVENES EMERGENCY SESSION AS SEC FREEZES ALL CORPORATE ACCOUNTS.
I sat in a secure, private room in the pediatric intensive care unit at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where my son—whom I officially named Arthur Vance Ashford, after the grandfather who had tried to protect us—was being monitored. The doctors confirmed he was entirely healthy, suffering only from mild jaundice that would clear within forty-eight hours.
Gabriel sat in the armchair beside me, scrolling through a torrent of live news feeds on his tablet.
"Victor is being held without bail at the Federal Detention Center on Arch Street," Gabriel reported, taking a sip of black coffee. "The Department of Justice hit him with eight federal counts: kidnapping, conspiracy to commit interstate human trafficking, healthcare fraud, and witness tampering. The state prosecutor is preparing attempted murder charges based on the hallway shooting."
"And Dr. Kessler?" I asked, looking down at Arthur sleeping peacefully in my arms. The warmth of his tiny body against my chest seemed to stitch back together the pieces of my shattered soul.
"Kessler turned state's evidence within an hour of his arrest," Gabriel smirked. "He sang like a canary. He handed over three years of private correspondence with Victor, including audio recordings where Victor explicitly instructed him to sterilize you and falsify the cancer diagnosis to eliminate your legal standing."
The door opened, and Sarah Lin walked in, carrying a leather briefcase and an official court order bearing the gold seal of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
"It's done, Helena," Sarah said, sitting on the edge of the sofa. "The probate court just granted our emergency motion to enforce Arthur Ashford Senior's testamentary trust. As the legal guardian of the firstborn legitimate male heir, you have been appointed the sole trustee of the Ashford family's fifty-one percent controlling interest in Ashford Meridian, effective immediately."
I looked up at Sarah. "What about Celeste Rowan?"
Sarah’s eyes darkened with cold amusement. "She’s currently holed up in her penthouse in Rittenhouse Square, surrounded by reporters and process servers. When Victor was arrested, she attempted to liquidate fourteen million dollars from Ashford Meridian's media subsidiary and wire it to a dummy corporation in Belize. The Treasury Department flagged the transaction. She was served with a federal subpoena two hours ago."
"She thinks she can hide behind her pregnancy," I said quietly, gently smoothing the blanket over my son's shoulders. "She thinks that child makes her untouchable."
"She’s about to find out how wrong she is," Sarah handed me a manila folder. "The Ashford Meridian board of directors has called an emergency shareholder summit for tomorrow morning at nine o'clock at the corporate headquarters. They intend to vote on an emergency restructuring plan. As majority trustee, your presence is required."

I closed my eyes for a brief second, feeling the dull ache in my abdomen remind me of what had been stolen from me. Victor and Celeste had taken my body, my ability to ever bear another child, and four days of my son's life.
Tomorrow, I would take everything they had left.
