Chapter 6 - THE CONFESSION IN THE DARK

"Step away from the child, Helena," Victor commanded, his voice echoing off the concrete walls with chilling authority. "All of you, hands where my men can see them."

The two armed guards behind him raised their weapons, training red laser sights onto Gabriel and Marcus. Sarah Lin immediately stepped back against the wall, her phone held high, recording every second of the standoff.

"Victor, put the gun down," Gabriel said calmly, shifting his body slightly to cover me. "There are security cameras on this entire wing. If you pull that trigger, there isn't enough money in the Ashford empire to keep you out of a maximum-security prison."

"Those cameras were disabled forty-five minutes ago, Vance," Victor sneered, stepping closer, his polished Italian leather shoes clicking arrogantly on the floor. "Nobody knows Helena is here. As far as the authorities are concerned, my emotionally unstable wife wandered out of our home in a grief-induced psychosis and died in a tragic confrontation with an unidentified armed intruder in an abandoned hospital wing."

He looked directly at me, his eyes dead, void of any trace of the man who had held my hands at the altar four years ago.

"You should have stayed in bed, Helena. You should have taken the pills. I was going to let you live a comfortable, quiet life in Europe. You would have had a villa in Tuscany, a generous allowance, everything you could ever want."

"Everything except my son," I said, holding the incubator tightly against my side, ignoring the agony tearing through my stitched abdomen. "Everything except my dignity, my body, and my child. You told Dr. Kessler to carve out my uterus because you couldn't stand the thought of an heir you didn't fully control."

Victor chuckled, a dry, mocking sound. "Old Arthur’s trust covenant was an archaic piece of garbage. He wanted to give control of Ashford Meridian to a child? To your son? You come from a family of broke journalists and civil servants, Helena! You don't have the stomach for this business. Celeste understands power. Her child will be born in a legitimate marriage after our divorce, and her bloodline will carry the company into the next century."

"Your father's trust doesn't belong to Celeste, Victor," Dr. Kessler suddenly whimpered from the floor, clutching his trembling knees. "The legal succession was triggered the moment that boy drew breath. It was logged in the emergency delivery report before I could alter the file."

Victor swung his pistol toward Kessler, his jaw clenching. "Shut your mouth, Owen, or I'll bury you in the foundation of the new surgical wing."

"He's right, Victor," I said, taking a bold, deliberate step forward, putting myself between the gun and my baby. "You're already too late. Dr. Kessler’s personal journal, the forged pathology reports, your wire transfers to Zurich and the Caymans—they're already in the hands of the United States Attorney’s Office and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Sarah Lin hit 'send' on that encrypted dossier the second we entered this hallway."

Victor’s eyes widened slightly, a sudden crack appearing in his mask of supreme confidence. He glanced at Sarah Lin, who gave him a sharp, cold nod.

"You're bluffing," Victor hissed. "You had no access to my safe."

"0-8-1-4-2-2-0-9," I recited coldly. "The day you thought you buried your son. You aren't as brilliant as you think you are, Victor. You're just a cowardly, arrogant thief who thinks a family name makes him untouchable."

A violent rage flared across Victor’s face. His finger tightened on the trigger. "If I go down, you don't walk out of here alive, Helena."

A sudden deafening pop shattered the silence.

Victor stumbled back, a scream ripping from his throat as his pistol clattered to the concrete floor. Blood blossomed through the shoulder of his tailored charcoal coat.

Behind him, standing in the open doorway of the stairwell, stood five tactical officers from the Philadelphia Police Department's Major Crimes Division, their rifles raised and aimed directly at Victor’s security detail.

"Drop your weapons! On the ground! Right now!" the lead officer barked.

Victor's guards instantly dropped their guns and raised their hands, dropping to their knees. Victor fell against the wall, clutching his bleeding shoulder, staring in sheer disbelief as handcuffs were snapped around his wrists.

"Helena Ashford?" a female officer approached me, her face softening as she looked at the tiny bundle in the incubator. "We received the emergency warrant from Judge Callahan twenty minutes ago based on your counsel's filing. Paramedics are upstairs waiting for the infant."

I fell to my knees, not from pain, but from sheer, overwhelming relief. I reached into the incubator, my trembling finger gently brushing against my son’s soft, warm cheek.

May you like

He stirred, his tiny hand opening and closing around my pinky finger, holding on with an instinctive, ferocious grip.

"You're safe now, baby," I sobbed, pressing my forehead against the cool acrylic. "Mommy's got you."
