Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT THE HOUSE CHOSE SIDES

Rose’s old music room had been sealed for almost two years.

Grant claimed a pipe had burst behind the walls.

Vanessa told guests the room was being renovated.

Neither explanation was true.

When Elena, Rose, Dante, Miriam, and Victor returned to the estate that evening, the hallway leading to the room smelled faintly of plaster.

Dante inspected the lock.

“Changed recently.”

Elena looked at Grant.

He had been allowed to return under attorney supervision while prosecutors reviewed his cooperation agreement.

“I never changed it.”

“You lived here.”

“I stopped using the east wing after Vanessa moved in.”

Rose looked at him.

“You let her close my room.”

Grant lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Dante forced the lock.

Inside, dusty sheets covered the piano.

Rose stopped.

Her childhood photographs remained on one wall.

Elena saw birthday parties.

School concerts.

A picture of Rose at eight sitting on Salvatore Moretti’s shoulders.

For the first time, she saw her daughter smile at something connected to the house.

Then Rose walked toward the piano.

“Grandpa used to hide things in here.”

Victor nodded.

“Your grandfather hid things everywhere.”

Rose pressed a small wooden ornament beneath the keyboard.

A panel opened.

Empty.

Victor frowned.

“He knew about this?”

“I showed him when I was little.”

Elena inspected the compartment.

Scratches covered the inside.

Something had been removed.

Recently.

Dante crouched.

“Dust pattern.”

Rose looked disappointed.

“It’s gone.”

“No,” Victor said.

Everyone turned.

He walked toward the music stand.

“Salvatore never used the same hiding place twice.”

Victor removed the stand.

Beneath it sat a brass screw.

He twisted it.

A second compartment opened.

Inside was a long black case.

Elena stopped breathing.

Victor whispered, “There you are.”

Miriam opened it.

The original ledger.

Handwritten ownership records.

Transfer certificates.

Notarized agreements.

Everything proving Dominic’s branch had held Rose’s shares only conditionally.

Rose stared.

“This is what they were looking for?”

“Yes.”

Dante immediately photographed it.

Miriam placed it into an evidence bag.

Then the fire alarm sounded.

Dante looked up.

“No.”

Smoke entered beneath the door.

Rose coughed.

Elena grabbed her.

“Move.”

They entered the hallway.

Smoke poured from the western stairs.

Dante radioed security.

No response.

“Fire department?”

Miriam called.

Elena saw orange light reflecting from below.

Someone had set the archive room on fire.

The same archive containing corporate originals recovered from the basement.

Not an accident.

“East stairs,” Dante ordered.

They moved.

Then a figure appeared through the smoke.

Dominic.

Rose froze.

He held no weapon.

Just a gasoline can.

Elena stared.

“You’re insane.”

Dominic laughed.

“No. I’m cleaning up.”

Dante stepped forward.

“Stay where you are.”

Dominic looked at Victor.

“Give me the ledger.”

“No.”

“Uncle.”

“No.”

Dominic smiled.

“You chose her family over your own brother’s son.”

Victor’s face hardened.

“You stopped being your father’s son when you drugged that girl.”

Dominic looked toward Rose.

“She was never supposed to get hurt.”

Rose laughed.

It was a terrible sound.

“You all keep saying that.”

Dominic’s expression changed.

“I mean it.”

“You stole my money.”

“It was never about your money.”

“You locked me in my room.”

“That was Grant.”

“You paid the doctor.”

Silence.

“You knew.”

Dominic stared.

Rose stepped forward despite Elena reaching for her.

“You knew the pills made me confused.”

Dominic said nothing.

“You knew Vanessa hit me.”

“No.”

“You knew Dad was trying to make me legally disappear.”

“Elena was destroying the family.”

Rose looked at him.

“That has nothing to do with me.”

“You were going to control everything.”

“I didn’t even know!”

“That was the problem!”

His shout echoed through the burning hallway.

Finally, the truth.

“You were going to turn twenty-five and inherit controlling shares without earning anything. Your mother would put you beside her. Together you’d sell what remained.”

Rose stared.

“So you decided I shouldn’t be allowed to make decisions.”

Dominic breathed heavily.

“I decided the family needed someone capable.”

Rose’s expression became almost peaceful.

“You mean someone like you.”

“Yes.”

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Dante’s body camera captured everything.

Miriam held up her phone.

So did hers.

Dominic realized.

His face changed.

Sirens sounded outside.

He stepped backward.

Then he smiled.

“You still don’t have everything.”

Elena frowned.

“What?”

“The Sardinia driver.”

Grant appeared from the opposite hallway.

Everyone turned.

He was covered in soot.

“I found him.”

Dominic’s face collapsed.

Grant held a phone.

On speaker, a man spoke in Italian-accented English.

Police had apparently detained the driver at JFK trying to leave the country.

Grant looked at Elena.

“He confessed.”

Dominic ran.

Dante followed.

Elena grabbed Rose.

“Outside.”

They reached the east terrace as firefighters entered from the front.

Victor carried the ledger.

Miriam carried copied drives.

Grant stumbled out behind them.

Vanessa and Celeste emerged from another entrance.

Celeste ran toward Rose.

“You okay?”

Rose nodded.

Vanessa stood alone on the grass.

No diamonds.

No champagne.

No confidence.

She looked at Elena.

“I didn’t start the fire.”

“I know.”

“Dominic called me.”

Elena narrowed her eyes.

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

“What did he want?”

“The ledger.”

“Why would he call you?”

“Because he thought I had it.”

Elena stared.

Vanessa started crying.

“I swear I didn’t know anything about the accident in Sardinia.”

“You knew about Rose.”

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.”

“You hit her.”

Tears rolled down her face.

“Yes.”

Celeste turned.

Her face crumpled.

“Mom.”

Vanessa whispered, “I’m sorry.”

Rose stood very still.

Vanessa looked at her.

“I hated you because every time Grant looked at you, I knew this house would never really be mine.”

Rose said nothing.

“I told myself you were spoiled. Difficult. Sick.”

“You knew I wasn’t.”

Vanessa began crying harder.

“Yes.”

No excuses.

Rose looked at Elena.

Then back at Vanessa.

“I don’t forgive you.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Rose continued.

“But I’m glad you finally told the truth.”

Police crossed the lawn.

They placed Vanessa under arrest based on evidence connected to the fraudulent financial activity and Rose’s abuse allegations.

Celeste sobbed.

Rose reached for her hand.

It surprised everyone.

“You didn’t do what she did.”

Celeste looked at her.

“I wore your things.”

“You believed her.”

“I should’ve asked.”

“Yes.”

Celeste nodded.

“I’m sorry.”

This time Rose answered differently.

“I believe you.”

Across the property, police found Dominic near the old carriage house.

He had tried to leave through a service road.

Dante walked him back in handcuffs.

Dominic looked at Elena.

“You think you won.”

She stared.

“This was never a game.”

“You killed the family.”

“No.”

She looked at Rose.

“I ended what was killing it.”

Dominic was taken away.

Firefighters contained the archive fire.

Most records survived.

The ledger survived.

Nora survived.

Rose survived.

For the first time, Elena thought perhaps the worst was over.

Then Miriam received a call.

She listened silently.

Her expression changed.

“What?” Elena asked.

Miriam lowered the phone.

“Grant’s guardianship attorneys filed one final motion before withdrawing.”

Grant frowned.

“What motion?”

Miriam stared at him.

“Emergency protective custody.”

Rose went pale.

“Of me?”

Miriam nodded.

“They’re claiming Elena’s return has placed you under the influence of an organized-crime family and that your mother is coercing your testimony.”

Elena almost laughed.

“They’re using the Moretti history against me.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Hearing tomorrow morning.”

Rose closed her eyes.

Elena touched her shoulder.

“We beat it.”

Miriam did not answer.

Elena noticed.

“What?”

“There’s more.”

Miriam swallowed.

“The judge granted a temporary sealed order.”

“For what?”

“Rose is not allowed to leave New York State.”

Rose stared.

“And?”

Miriam hesitated.

“Until the hearing, Elena is prohibited from being alone with you.”

Silence fell across the lawn.

May you like

After three years apart, someone had found one final legal way to separate mother and daughter.

And this time, the order carried the authority of a court.
