Chapter 7 - SHE VANISHED FROM HER OWN HOME

“No.”
Elena said the word before anyone else had finished reading the message.
“No one is sending Rose anywhere.”
Rose stared at the photograph.
“They’ll hurt Nora.”
Dante returned through the east hallway.
“We have vehicles moving.”
Elena handed him the phone.
“Trace it.”
“I already sent the number.”
Miriam frowned.
“We call police.”
Dominic laughed from behind them.
Everyone turned.
“You think whoever took Nora is going to sit in a warehouse waiting for detectives?”
Elena looked at him.
“You know where she is.”
“No.”
“You know who took her.”
“No.”
Grant appeared near the stairs.
“Elena.”
She turned.
His face looked different.
Defeated.
“You need to listen to him.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“To Dominic?”
“No. To me.”
Dominic shook his head.
“Grant.”
Grant ignored him.
“There’s an old property in Westchester.”
Dante stared.
“Which property?”
“An abandoned retreat house.”
Dominic moved.
“Shut your mouth.”
Dante seized his arm.
Dominic spun.
For a second the old Moretti violence flashed across both men.
Elena stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Grant continued.
“Northstar leased it two years ago.”
Miriam opened her phone.
“Address?”
Grant gave it.
Dominic laughed.
“You’re signing your own prison sentence.”
Grant looked at him.
“I think that happened yesterday.”
Rose stared at her father.
“Why are you helping?”
Grant’s face softened.
“Because none of this was supposed to happen to you.”
Rose almost laughed.
“You filed papers to take away my life.”
“I thought it would be temporary.”
“You paid for six months.”
Grant closed his eyes.
“I told myself once the company problems were fixed, I’d undo everything.”
Rose’s voice broke.
“You can’t undo three years.”
Grant looked as though the words physically struck him.
Elena did not comfort him.
“Dante.”
“Yes.”
“Go.”
Rose grabbed her arm.
“I’m coming.”
“No.”
“Nora disappeared because she helped me.”
“And I’m not losing you too.”
“Mom—”
“No.”
Rose stepped back.
Anger appeared.
Not fear.
Elena almost welcomed it.
“You left for three years because you decided protecting the company would eventually protect me.”
The words hit hard.
Rose continued.
“I know you didn’t know what Dad was doing. But you still decided for me.”
Elena said nothing.
“So please stop deciding that the only way to protect me is to lock me in another room.”
Silence.
Miriam looked away.
Elena stared at her daughter.
Rose was right.
It hurt because she was right.
“What do you want?”
“To help.”
“You are not walking into a kidnapping situation.”
“I didn’t say that.”
Rose took the phone.
“They want me.”
“Yes.”
“So use that.”
Dante frowned.
Elena already understood.
“No.”
“Mom.”
“No.”
“You don’t have to actually send me.”
Miriam looked interested.
“Keep talking.”
Elena glared at her.
Miriam shrugged.
“She’s an adult.”
Rose continued.
“We tell them I’m coming. Make them give us proof Nora is alive. Maybe they send a location.”
Dante nodded slowly.
“That could work.”
Elena looked at him.
“You’re supposed to disagree.”
“I protect people. I don’t ignore useful ideas.”
Rose almost smiled.
Elena sighed.
“Fine.”
They replied.
SHOW ME NORA LIVE.
Three minutes passed.
Then a video call arrived.
Dante connected it through a secure laptop.
A masked man appeared.
Nora sat behind him.
Alive.
Frightened.
“Rose Moretti comes alone.”
Elena stayed outside camera view.
Rose sat at the desk.
Her hands shook.
“What happens to Nora?”
“She walks away.”
“How do I know?”
“You don’t.”
Rose swallowed.
“Where?”
A location appeared.
Not Westchester.
Connecticut.
Dr. Chen looked at the address.
“That’s Northstar.”
Grant went pale.
“Which facility?”
Miriam checked.
“Fairfield County.”
Rose looked toward Elena.
Grant whispered, “That’s where they planned to place her.”
Elena understood.
The kidnappers were trying to turn Rose’s arrival into the same thing Grant had already prepared.
A voluntary admission.
If Rose walked into Northstar and paperwork already existed claiming she was unstable, they could attempt to hold her.
Miriam said, “We need law enforcement now.”
Dante nodded.
“I have state contacts.”
Elena looked at Grant.
“What else haven’t you told me?”
“Nothing.”
She stared.
He broke.
“There’s an intake order.”
“Of course there is.”
“Pierce signed it.”
“On what basis?”
Grant looked ashamed.
“Danger to self and others.”
Rose whispered, “I never hurt myself.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
“Because it gave the facility authority to restrict you temporarily.”
Elena walked away before she did something she would regret.
Miriam followed.
“Elena.”
“I chose legally.”
“I know.”
“I am reconsidering.”
“Don’t.”
Elena looked through the window toward the gray morning.
“My father would have ended this in twenty minutes.”
“And created twenty years of consequences.”
“He would have protected Rose.”
“Maybe.”
Elena turned.
Miriam’s voice softened.
“But Rose is not asking you to become your father.”
Elena looked back at her daughter.
Rose sat beside Dr. Chen.
Still pale.
Still bruised.
But participating.
Thinking.
Choosing.
Miriam continued.
“She’s asking you to become the mother she needs now.”
Elena exhaled.
“Call the state police.”
Within forty minutes, a plan was formed.
Rose would send confirmation she was traveling alone.
A decoy vehicle would approach the Northstar facility.
Police would remain outside the visible perimeter.
Dante’s people would coordinate only as civilian security.
Miriam obtained an emergency order preventing Northstar from admitting or transporting Rose without independent judicial review.
Then the first problem appeared.
Nora was no longer at Northstar.
Security cameras showed a black SUV leaving twelve minutes before police arrived.
The second problem appeared thirty seconds later.
Rose disappeared.
Elena entered the library and found the chair empty.
“Rose?”
Nothing.
Celeste came running downstairs.
“Have you seen her?”
Elena’s stomach dropped.
Dante checked doors.
The front entrance was secure.
West hall secure.
East hall—
Open.
On the floor lay a note.
MOM, I’M SORRY. THEY CALLED ME DIRECTLY. THEY SAID NORA DIES IF POLICE COME. I HAVE TO TRY.
Elena stopped breathing.
Dante cursed.
Grant went white.
“No.”
Elena turned on him.
“How would they have called her?”
“I don’t know.”
“She had Celeste’s phone.”
Celeste checked her pocket.
“No.”
Her phone was on the library table.
Rose had taken another device.
Grant suddenly ran upstairs.
Elena followed.
He entered his office and tore open a drawer.
Empty.
“My old phone.”
Elena stared.
“What?”
“She knows the code.”
“Can it be tracked?”
“Yes.”
Grant opened his laptop.
His hands shook so badly he mistyped the password twice.
Finally, a map appeared.
A blinking dot moved north.
“She’s on Interstate 684.”
Dante was already calling police.
Elena grabbed her coat.
Grant stood.
“I’m coming.”
“No.”
“She’s my daughter.”
Elena stared at him.
“You stopped earning that sentence a long time ago.”
His face collapsed.
But Rose was moving.
There was no time.
Two vehicles left the estate.
Dante drove the first.
Elena sat beside him.
State police tracked from a distance.
Twenty-three minutes later, Rose’s signal stopped.
The final location was not Northstar.
It was an abandoned stone estate outside Bedford.
Grant had lied.
Or the kidnappers had changed the destination.
Elena recognized the property the moment they approached.
Her uncle had owned it decades earlier.
Moretti land.
Dante killed the headlights.
Police surrounded the outer road.
Elena stared at the dark building.
“I know this place.”
“Then you know the service entrance.”
“Yes.”
Miriam’s voice came through Elena’s earpiece.
“Do not enter until police clear it.”
Elena ignored her.
Dante looked at her.
“She’s right.”
“My daughter is inside.”
“Give them two minutes.”
They never got two minutes.
A gunshot cracked through the night.
Elena was out of the vehicle before Dante could stop her.
“Rose!”
Police surged toward the building.
Another gunshot.
Glass shattered on the second floor.
Elena reached the side entrance.
Dante caught her.
“Behind me.”
They entered with officers.
The hallway smelled of dust and damp wood.
A man ran from the rear room.
Police took him down.
Elena heard crying upstairs.
“Nora?”
Then Rose screamed.
“Mom!”
Elena ran.
Second floor.
End room.
She opened the door.
Rose stood against the wall.
Nora was beside her.
Both alive.
A man held a pistol.
Not at them.
At himself.
Elena recognized him.
Dr. Malcolm Pierce.
His face was covered in sweat.
“You ruined everything.”
Dante raised his weapon.
“Put it down.”
Pierce laughed wildly.
“You think this was Grant?”
Elena stepped forward.
“Put the gun down.”
“You have no idea.”
“Then tell me.”
Pierce stared at her.
“Grant was useful.”
Rose grabbed Nora.
Pierce continued.
“Dominic was greedy.”
Elena’s heart pounded.
“Who were you working for?”
Pierce smiled.
“The same person who knew where you’d be in Sardinia.”
Dante shouted, “Weapon down!”
Pierce looked toward the window.
Then at Elena.
“You still don’t understand why your father created that secret trust.”
Elena froze.
“What?”
“He wasn’t protecting Rose from Grant.”
Pierce smiled.
“He was protecting her from another Moretti.”
A shadow moved behind him.
Police shouted.
Pierce turned.
The weapon fell.
Officers tackled him before he could reach it.
Elena rushed to Rose.
Her daughter collapsed against her.
Nora was crying.
Elena held both women.
Safe.
Alive.
Dante knelt beside Pierce.
“Who?”
Pierce laughed into the floor.
Elena looked at him.
“Who was my father protecting Rose from?”
Pierce turned his head.
Blood trickled from his lip.
“Ask Victor.”
May you like
And for the first time since Uncle Victor had walked into the estate, Elena wondered whether the oldest man in the family had returned to protect Rose—
or to make sure nobody discovered what Salvatore Moretti had hidden from him.
