Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Kept the Receipts

Nora Delgado had been keeping secrets in a Queens storage unit for eighteen months.

Not family gossip.

Not photographs.

Records.

Invoices.

Wire instructions.

Corporate transfers.

Copies of medication purchases.

Security contracts.

Payments made to Dr. Malcolm Pierce.

Every time Grant or Dominic ordered her to process something unusual, Nora had copied it.

“At first I thought Grant was hiding an affair,” she explained.

Vanessa looked away.

Nora continued.

“Then the transactions got stranger.”

Elena sat across from her.

“How strange?”

Nora opened the first file.

“Payments from Hale Consulting to Northstar Behavioral.”

Grant said, “Business expenses.”

Nora ignored him.

“Then payments from Northstar to Pierce Medical Advisory.”

Miriam leaned closer.

“How much?”

“Four hundred eighty thousand over two years.”

Dr. Chen swore under her breath.

Nora opened another folder.

“Then invoices for private residential placement.”

Rose became still.

Elena squeezed her hand.

“For Rose?”

Nora nodded.

“Six months prepaid.”

Rose whispered, “Six months?”

Nora’s eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena looked at Grant.

“You paid to imprison her before the court had even ruled.”

“It wasn’t prison.”

Rose turned.

“What was it?”

Grant looked at her.

“A treatment center.”

“Could I leave?”

He said nothing.

“Could I call Mom?”

“Elena—”

“Could I?”

Grant’s silence answered.

Rose stood.

“I want him away from me.”

Dante stepped between them.

Grant nodded slowly.

For once, he obeyed.

He left the library.

Vanessa followed him.

Celeste remained.

Nora watched them disappear.

“I tried to stop it.”

Elena looked at her.

“How?”

“I confronted Dominic.”

“Why him?”

“Because Grant didn’t scare me.”

Dominic laughed darkly from across the room.

“You should have been more afraid.”

Dante moved.

Elena raised a hand.

“No threats.”

Dominic looked at her.

“You still think behaving like some corporate saint will save this family?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“It might save Rose.”

He said nothing.

Nora continued.

“When I confronted Dominic, he told me the family was restructuring and I was too old to understand.”

Victor snorted.

“That sounds like his father.”

Dominic ignored him.

Nora looked at Elena.

“Two days later, I was fired.”

“You disappeared.”

“I was followed.”

Dante nodded.

“I moved her.”

Elena looked at him.

“So this was your work.”

“She needed protection.”

Nora reached across the table.

“You needed evidence.”

Miriam opened the final file.

Her expression grew serious.

“What is this?”

Nora took a breath.

“The inheritance projections.”

Elena read the header.

PROJECT CROWN.

Beneath it was a spreadsheet containing expected asset values after Elena’s presumed death and Rose’s incapacity order.

Property.

Voting rights.

Company distributions.

Trust income.

Even jewelry.

Vanessa had apparently selected specific pieces.

Rose stared at the list.

“They divided everything.”

Elena read one line.

MORETTI EAST ESTATE — RESIDENTIAL CONTROL: G. HALE / V. SINCLAIR.

Another.

R. MORETTI PERSONAL TRUST — PROXY CONTROL: G. HALE.

Another.

NORTHSTAR CAPITAL EXPANSION — D. MORETTI.

They had mapped her family’s future like spoils.

Miriam photographed every page.

“This changes everything.”

Elena looked toward Dominic.

He remained calm.

“Does it?”

Miriam stared.

“Yes.”

“It’s a spreadsheet.”

“With your initials.”

“My initials are DM. Half the men in Brooklyn could be DM.”

Victor laughed.

“You never were clever enough to be arrogant.”

Dominic’s eyes flashed.

Elena looked at Nora.

“Anything connecting this to Sardinia?”

Nora hesitated.

“That’s the one thing I couldn’t prove.”

Grant’s voice came from the hallway.

“Because Dominic used cash.”

Everyone turned.

He had returned alone.

Dominic stood.

“Keep talking and you’ll regret it.”

Grant smiled bitterly.

“What are you going to do? Ruin my life?”

He looked around.

“That seems handled.”

Elena said, “Grant.”

He met her eyes.

“I didn’t order your accident.”

“Who did?”

“Dominic.”

Dominic moved toward him.

Dante intercepted.

Grant continued.

“He said nobody had to die.”

Elena’s stomach turned.

“What does that mean?”

“He wanted you frightened.”

“By forcing my car toward a cliff?”

“He said the driver would scare you into leaving Europe.”

“You believed that?”

Grant rubbed his face.

“I was desperate.”

“Sixty million dollars desperate?”

“Yes.”

Rose whispered, “You tried to hurt Mom for money?”

Grant turned.

“No.”

“You helped him.”

“I gave information.”

“That’s helping.”

He stared at her.

Rose did not look away.

Something had changed in the last twenty-four hours.

The frightened girl was still there.

But each confirmed lie returned a piece of her certainty.

Grant saw it too.

“I loved you.”

Rose’s eyes filled.

“You loved controlling me.”

“That’s not true.”

“You loved me when I believed you.”

Grant had no answer.

Elena felt a painful pride.

Nora opened another envelope.

“This came yesterday.”

“What?”

“A courier left it at my apartment.”

Dante frowned.

“How did anyone know your apartment?”

“That’s why I came here.”

She handed it to Elena.

Inside was a photograph.

Rose leaving Columbia three years earlier.

Another showed Elena in Milan.

Another showed Nora entering the Queens storage facility.

Someone had been watching all of them.

On the back of Nora’s photograph were six handwritten words.

RETURN WHAT YOU STOLE OR SHE DISAPPEARS.

Elena’s blood chilled.

“Who is she?”

Nora shook her head.

“I assumed me.”

Rose’s phone buzzed.

Everyone turned.

She stared at it.

Elena frowned.

“I thought you didn’t have one.”

“Celeste gave me hers.”

Rose opened the message.

Her face went pale.

“What?”

She handed Elena the phone.

A text from an unknown number.

YOUR MOTHER’S LAWYER FOUND THE ORIGINAL LETTERS. COME TO THE EAST GATE ALONE. SHE SAID NO SECURITY.

Elena stared.

“I didn’t send this.”

Miriam shook her head.

“Neither did I.”

Dante immediately moved toward the windows.

“When did it arrive?”

“Just now.”

He radioed the gate.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Dante swore.

“Stay here.”

He ran.

Elena grabbed Rose.

“You don’t leave my sight.”

Rose nodded.

Then the lights went out.

The entire mansion dropped into darkness.

Someone screamed upstairs.

Emergency lights flickered red along the hall.

Dante’s voice came through the radio.

“East gate is open.”

Elena pulled Rose closer.

“Everybody stays together.”

A crash sounded from the kitchen.

Then another.

Miriam turned on her phone flashlight.

“Nora?”

No answer.

“Nora?”

The chair beside Elena was empty.

The back door stood open.

Cold air poured into the room.

Dante’s voice exploded from the radio.

“Elena!”

“What?”

“Someone just drove through the east gate.”

Her heart stopped.

Rose clung to her.

“I’m here.”

Elena looked beside her.

Rose was there.

Miriam was there.

Victor.

Celeste.

But Nora was gone.

Dante continued.

“Black SUV. No plates.”

Elena ran toward the back entrance.

On the floor lay Nora’s accounting file.

Open.

Empty.

Every original document she had brought was gone.

Except one page.

Elena picked it up.

Across the bottom, Nora had written a note in red ink.

IF I DISAPPEAR, CHECK ROSE’S OLD MUSIC ROOM.

Then Elena heard Rose behind her.

“Mom?”

She turned.

Rose was staring down at Celeste’s phone.

Another text had appeared.

This one contained a photograph.

Nora sat bound in the back of a vehicle.
