Chapter 6 - THE STOLEN MOTHER

The night air screamed as Lucas’s SUV tore across the Chicago skyway, hitting speeds of one hundred and ten miles per hour through the blinding rain. Inside the vehicle, the silence was suffocating, broken only by the rhythmic click of Marcus loading two additional magazines for his service weapon.
"Don't do anything reckless, boss," Marcus said quietly, his eyes fixed on the rain-slicked highway ahead. "If Richard has state marshals, shooting our way in will get you killed or locked in a federal penitentiary before you can save her."
"They are moving her while she has active pulmonary clots," Lucas said, his knuckles white against the dashboard. "Every second she's in that ambulance is a death sentence. Richard isn't taking her to St. Jude’s to treat her, Marcus. He's taking her there to induce labor in a controlled facility where no outside doctor can witness what happens."
When they arrived at Northwestern Memorial, the trauma bay entrance was a chaotic scene of flashing lights and shouting security guards. Lucas didn't wait for the vehicle to stop completely; he leaped out, his boots hitting the slush, and charged through the emergency room doors.
The fourth floor was completely sealed off by two uniformed state marshals standing before the double doors of the intensive care unit.
"Sir, this unit is under court-ordered quarantine!" one marshal barked, stepping forward with his hand raised.
Lucas didn't slow down. He lowered his shoulder and hit the marshal at full sprint, slamming the two-hundred-pound officer into the drywall with enough force to crack the plaster. Before the second marshal could draw his baton, Marcus Vance had him by the throat, pinning him against the nurses' station counter.
Lucas kicked the ICU doors open.
Trauma Room 1 was completely empty.
The monitors were unplugged, their cords trailing like severed veins across the linoleum. Emma’s bed was gone. On the floor lay a shattered glass vial of saline and a single, crumpled piece of yellow hospital paper stained with a drop of fresh blood.
Dr. Elena Ramos was being restrained in the corner by an administrator in a grey suit. When she saw Lucas, she tore herself free, her surgical mask hanging off one ear, her eyes wide with desperation.
"They took her through the freight elevator, Lucas!" she cried out. "Seven minutes ago! Richard Bennett brought in private EMTs with badges signed by the probate board! I tried to block the gurney, but the hospital counsel ordered us to stand down because of the amended warrant!"
"Where did they take her?" Lucas demanded, his chest heaving.
"Not St. Jude’s," Dr. Ramos said, pulling a crumpled dispatch slip from her pocket and shoving it into his hands. "I saw the transport driver's routing tablet when he signed the release. The destination wasn't St. Jude’s. It was the Bennett Family Estate in Lake Forest."
Lucas felt the floor drop beneath him.
Lake Forest. The ancestral family compound. A sprawling, fortress-like estate surrounded by ten-foot stone walls and dense pine woods, equipped with an underground medical suite built during his grandfather's final years of private hospice care. It was completely isolated, privately guarded, and cut off from any municipal oversight. If they got Emma behind those iron gates, no city cop or federal marshal could enter without a search warrant that would take twelve hours to obtain from a federal magistrate.
And in twelve hours, Emma would be dead, and the child would be an orphan under Margaret Bennett's legal care.
Lucas turned and sprinted back toward the elevators. "Marcus! Call every man we have in the northern suburbs! Block the Edens Expressway! Block Route 41! We run them down before they hit the Lake Forest gates!"
As they hit the ground floor, Lucas’s personal phone buzzed with an incoming video call from an unlisted number.
He answered it immediately, holding the screen before his face.
The screen flickered, revealing the interior of the Lake Forest estate's private medical room. The walls were lined with vintage dark mahogany, contrasting sharply with the cold surgical equipment installed around a central hospital bed.
Emma lay on the bed, her face pale as marble, an oxygen mask strapped over her nose and mouth. Standing beside her was Margaret Bennett, wearing surgical gloves and looking down at the camera with cold, triumphant calm.
"Hello, Lucas," Margaret said, her voice smooth and devoid of static. "I told you that you were being irrational. You forced Richard to accelerate the schedule."
"Margaret, if you hurt her, I will tear that house down stone by stone with you inside it!" Lucas screamed into the microphone, his voice echoing through the hospital lobby.
"You won't tear anything down, darling," Margaret replied chillingly. "Dr. Harris is already scrubbing in. Emma’s vitals are deteriorating rapidly due to the stress of your little public stunt at Northwestern. An emergency cesarean section is medically unavoidable to preserve the life of the child. Sadly... given Emma’s severe pre-existing vascular damage and sudden internal hemorrhaging, it is highly doubtful that the mother will survive the procedure."
"Margaret, don't do this!" Lucas pleaded, the terror in his heart finally breaking through his rage. "Take the company! Take the money! Take every single cent my father left me! Just let her go! Let me take my wife!"
Margaret offered a cold, pitying smile. "Oh, Lucas. You never understood power. Money isn't something you give away to buy mercy. Money is what remains after the weak have been discarded. When you arrive, you will be a grieving widower. And you will be an obedient son once more."

Behind Margaret, the video captured the silhouette of Richard Bennett walking into the frame, holding a surgical consent form and a pen.
The screen went black.
