Chapter 5 - THE RUNAWAY NURSE

The freezing rain over Gary, Indiana, turned the tarmac into a sheet of black ice. Lucas sat in the passenger seat of Marcus’s armored SUV as it blasted through the rusted perimeter gate of Hangar 4, the heavy steel grill shattering the chain-link fence without slowing down.
Inside the dimly lit hangar, the twin turboprops of a Gulfstream IV were already whining, spooling up to taxi toward the runway. A silver Mercedes sedan sat parked near the boarding stairs, its trunk wide open.
"Block the nose gear!" Lucas commanded.
Marcus swung the heavy vehicle around in a controlled slide, slamming the reinforced front bumper directly into the small steering wheel assembly of the jet's nose cone. Metal screeched against metal, hydraulic fluid sprayed across the concrete, and the plane shuddered to a violent halt. The engines died with an agonized whine as the pilot cut the fuel lines in panic.
Before the smoke had even cleared, Lucas kicked his door open and stepped out into the biting wind.
A woman in a thick fur-trimmed parka was frantically trying to hoist three heavy duffel bags up the mobile boarding staircase. When she saw Lucas advancing across the hangar floor, her face twisted in terror. She dropped the bags and scrambled up the steps, pounding on the locked cabin door of the jet.
"Open the door! Open it now, damn you!" she screamed.
Lucas took the metal stairs three at a time. He grabbed the hood of her parka and hauled her backward with one arm, spinning her around and slamming her against the aluminum fuselage of the aircraft.
Nurse Brenda Hollis gasped for air, her dyed blonde hair plastered across her face by the wind. Up close, without her soft nursing scrubs and gentle maternal smile, she looked hard-edged, bitter, and terrified.
"Mr. Bennett! Please! Don't hurt me!" she shrieked, clawing at his hands. "I was just doing what I was paid to do! I'm a professional—"
"A professional what?" Lucas roared, his voice echoing through the vast hangar like gunfire. "A professional torturer? You tied my wife to a bed! You injected her with contaminated sedatives! You let blood clots form in her legs while she begged for a doctor!"
"It wasn't my idea!" Brenda sobbed, her knees giving out, leaving her hanging from Lucas's iron grip on her jacket. "Margaret... Margaret said Emma had to be kept immobile! She said if Emma stayed active, the pregnancy would proceed normally, and you would never agree to sign the trust handover! Margaret wanted her bedridden so Richard could claim she had pre-eclampsia and postpartum psychosis before she even gave birth!"
"What did you give her?" Lucas shook her violently, his face inches from hers. "Tell me what you injected into her, or I swear to God I will leave you locked in a shipping container at the bottom of Lake Michigan!"
"Low-dose ketamine and haloperidol!" Brenda cried, tears and mascara streaming down her face. "Just enough to keep her confused! Just enough so she couldn't answer the phone or talk to you coherently! The bruises... the bruises were because she fought back! She fought me every single day, Lucas! She tried to crawl to the door when you were at work! I had to tie her ankles to the bed frame or she would have reached the elevator!"
A cold shudder tore through Lucas’s soul. He pictured Emma, his brave, sweet Emma who used to wake up at four in the morning to knead sourdough bread with a smile, crawling across their hardwood floors in agonizing pain, trying to reach him, only to be dragged back and tied like an animal by this monster.
"Where is the ledger?" Lucas whispered, his voice deadly calm now. "The one you stole from my study safe."
Brenda pointed a trembling, gloved hand toward the open duffel bag on the stairs. "In... in the bottom of the black bag. With the hard drives. Richard told me to wipe your personal server and bring the original trust ledgers from 2009. He said once he had those, your father’s old signatures couldn't be challenged."
Lucas shoved her down onto the metal steps, where Marcus immediately stepped forward, slapping a pair of heavy steel zip-ties around her wrists.
Lucas knelt by the duffel bag and pulled out a battered, leather-bound corporate record book. He opened it under the harsh hangar lights. Tucked inside the front cover were three folded documents bearing the official watermark of the Cook County Probate Registry, dated twelve years ago.
Lucas scanned the pages, and the blood drained from his face.
It wasn't just a corporate trust. It was an insurance policy.
Twelve years ago, before his father’s fatal car crash, Margaret and Richard had executed an irrevocable transfer of all family assets into a private blind trust. But there was an exclusionary clause written in bold, archaic legal script: In the event that the primary heir, Lucas Bennett, produces a legitimate biological male child, all control of the underlying real estate holdings, offshore accounts, and board voting rights shall immediately vest in the child upon his birth, bypassing all secondary executors.
Lucas stared at the page, the truth hitting him with the force of an avalanche.
His mother and Richard didn't just hate Emma because she was poor.
They hated her because her child was an existential threat. If Emma gave birth to Lucas's son, Margaret and Richard would be stripped of every single dollar, every boardroom seat, and every shred of authority they had spent fifteen years hoarding. They didn't just want the baby to steal him.
They wanted Emma dead during childbirth so they could claim sole legal guardianship of the infant heir, control the trust in his name, and leave Lucas with nothing.
"Boss," Marcus said, looking down at his ringing phone. "It's Dr. Ramos from Northwestern."
May you like
Lucas dropped the bag, grabbed the phone, and pressed it to his ear. "Dr. Ramos? Is she okay?"
"Lucas, you need to get back here right now," Dr. Ramos's voice was tight with unprecedented panic. "A team of state marshals arrived ten minutes ago with an amended emergency warrant signed directly by the appellate court. They’ve locked down the entire fourth floor. Richard Bennett is here in person with a transport team from St. Jude’s. They're cutting our security access. Lucas... they're taking her right now."
