Chapter 9 - CROSSFIRE ON ALLIGATOR ALLEY

The water in the utility basement was chest-high, black as pitch, and rising at a terrifying rate. Cody waded through the swirling current, his boots dragging against submerged pipes and loose cables. The water smelled of diesel and decaying vegetation. Above him, the bunker shook violently as the second breaching charge detonated, blowing the reinforced steel door off its hinges with a deafening roar.

Cody ducked under a cluster of floating plastic conduits, shining his penlight across the submerged junction boxes. Finally, he spotted it: a bright red steel enclosure marked ANALOG SYSTEM OVERRIDE - PROJECT AEGIS.

He reached for the heavy cast-iron lever, but it was seized with decades of rust. Cody planted his feet against a concrete stanchion, locked both hands onto the cold iron handle, and pulled with every ounce of strength in his athletic frame. His muscles tore, his breath raged, but the lever refused to budge.

Above him, heavy combat boots stomped onto the concrete floor of the upper bunker. Mercer’s cold, authoritative voice echoed down through the open trapdoor.

"Check the server room! Find the drive! Kill anything that moves!"

Cody closed his eyes, picturing Arthur Vance’s desperate, pleading gaze on Griffin Road. He pictured Maya huddled in the dark locker with pruning shears. He pictured his best friends, risking their lives simply because they had decided not to drive past a stranger in need.

"Not today!" Cody roared through clenched teeth.

With a primal scream that echoed through the flooded vault, Cody threw his entire weight backward. The rusted cast-iron lever gave way with a sharp, resonant CLANG!

Deep within the server racks above, high-voltage relays snapped into place. Down in the basement, hundreds of fiber-optic cables illuminated with blinding, pulsing blue light, sending terabytes of unalterable, incriminating evidence screaming through the subterranean glass veins beneath the Florida Turnpike directly into the servers of the Department of Justice and the global press.

On the wall above, the automated alert siren began to howl—an emergency broadcast confirmation tone that shrieked through the bunker:

TRANSMISSION COMPLETE. PUBLIC ARCHIVE INITIALIZED.

"What was that?!" an operative shouted from above. "Boss, the data just hit the wire! It’s everywhere! My phone’s blowing up with national news alerts!"

"Find the boy!" Mercer roared, his voice cracking with unhinged fury. "Kill him now!"

A flashlight beam stabbed down through the open trapdoor, locking onto Cody’s face in the water. A mercenary leaned over the opening, raising an automatic shotgun.

Cody didn't hesitate. Raising the submerged Glock he had kept tucked in his belt, Cody broke the water’s surface and fired three rapid shots upward through the opening. The rounds slammed into the ceiling above, showering the mercenary with concrete dust and forcing him to dive backward.

Cody lunged for the emergency flood-exhaust pipe at the rear of the vault—a four-foot drainage tube that flushed excess water directly out through the levee face into the canal. He took a massive gulp of air and let the raging torrent of water suck him into the black pipe.

He shot through thirty feet of smooth concrete like a human torpedo, bursting out of the drainage culvert into the raging storm of the Florida Everglades, tumbling into the churning waters of the C-11 canal.

He broke the surface, gasping for oxygen, only to hear the unmistakable roar of an approaching helicopter cutting through the rain.
