Chapter 10 - The Reckoning at Sawgrass Marina

Searchlights with the power of miniature suns pierced through the driving rain, blinding Cody as he hauled himself out of the canal onto the muddy banks of the levee spillway. High above, three massive Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Hostage Rescue Team hovered over the marsh, their rotor wash whipping the canal into a frothing frenzy.

Behind a stand of melaleuca trees, Brody and Logan were shielding Maya, their hands raised in compliance as a team of federal tactical agents in full combat gear secured their perimeter.

"Down on the ground! Drop your weapons!" an amplified voice boomed from the lead chopper.

Down the levee slope, Mercer and his two surviving mercenaries emerged from the burning bunker, their weapons drawn, completely oblivious that the entire Everglades had just been transformed into a federal containment zone. Mercer’s face was twisted in psychotic rage, his eyes locked onto Brody, Logan, and the little girl.

"I will burn this entire county to the ground before I let you walk out of here!" Mercer screamed, raising his assault rifle to execute the teenagers where they stood.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapon!" an agent screamed through a bullhorn.

Mercer didn't drop it. He tightened his finger on the trigger.

Cody, still soaked and bleeding from the culvert escape, lunged from the mud behind Mercer. With a ferocious, diving tackle, Cody hit Mercer’s knees from behind, taking the corrupt operative down into the jagged limestone gravel. The rifle fired harmlessly into the stormy sky as both bodies crashed into the mud.

Mercer rolled over, his face purple with rage, his massive hands locking around Cody’s throat, pressing his thumbs into Cody’s windpipe. "You stupid, meddling brat!" Mercer snarled, his spit hitting Cody’s face. "You ruined everything!"

Cody fought for air, his vision fading to black around the edges. But he refused to quit. With his right hand, Cody grabbed a fistful of sharp limestone gravel and drove it straight into Mercer’s eyes.

Mercer shrieked in pain, releasing his grip to clutch his blinded face.

Before Mercer could recover, four FBI assault agents swarmed over the embankment. Steel-toed boots pinned Mercer’s arms to the ground, heavy zip-ties ratcheted around his wrists, and the cold muzzles of three tactical carbines were pressed firmly against the back of his neck.

"Richard Mercer, you are under arrest for treason, environmental terrorism, conspiracy to commit murder, and the assassination of a federal witness," the lead agent barked, hauling the handcuffed criminal to his knees in the mud.

Mercer spat blood onto the gravel, glaring at Cody with pure, undiluted hatred. "You think you won, kid? The syndicate owns judges, senators, governors. We’ll be out before breakfast."

The lead agent leaned down, his voice colder than ice. "Not this time, Mercer. The evidence your young friend just blasted across the global wire includes your encrypted Swiss accounts, wiretaps of your boardroom hits, and the chemical forensics that match the poison found in Arthur Vance’s blood. You’re spending the rest of your natural life in ADX Florence. Move him out!"

Brody and Logan rushed down the slope, throwing their arms around Cody in a crushing, tear-filled embrace. Maya ran toward them, burying her face into Cody’s soaked, muddy jacket, weeping with profound relief.

"You did it, Cody," Brody sobbed, his voice breaking. "You saved her. We saved her."

Cody looked down at the little girl, gently stroking her soaked hair, the rain washing away the blood, sweat, and terror of the longest night of their lives. "We promised your grandpa," Cody whispered softly. "You’re safe now, Maya. You’re finally safe."
