Chapter 8 - Sins of the Syndicate

Inside the pitch-black bunker, nobody breathed. The only sound was the rhythmic drum of heavy rain against the concrete roof and Maya’s tiny, trembling breaths.
"What do we do?" Brody whispered into the dark, his voice steady despite the hopeless odds. "The power's cut. We can't broadcast without the antenna, and Mercer has the perimeter surrounded."
Cody felt his way through the dark to the master console, pulling a small tactical penlight from Arthur's sea-bag. The beam illuminated the circuit schematics painted on the interior wall.
"The antenna on the roof isn't the only transmitter," Cody said, tracing a thick yellow line on the diagram. "This bunker sits right above the primary fiber-optic trunk line that runs beneath the Florida Turnpike all the way to downtown Miami. Arthur designed a manual mechanical override—a hard-wired analog relay switch in the utility basement. If we flip that switch, the data doesn't go through the air. It bypasses the antenna entirely and fires directly through the subterranean glass cable!"
"Where's the utility basement?" Logan asked.
Cody pointed down at a heavy cast-iron trapdoor set into the concrete floor, secured by four massive wing-nuts. "Under our feet. But look at the warning label."
Logan read the stencil aloud under the penlight beam: DANGER: FLOOD CONTROL SUMP. AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY RELEASE HAZARD.
"If the levee exceeds flood stage, this basement automatically fills with water from the canal to equalize pressure," Brody said, his mechanic’s mind grasping the peril instantly. "And with this hurricane dumping rain outside, that basement is probably already flooding."
Suddenly, a massive concussive blast blew the exterior intercom off the wall outside. The heavy steel entrance door shuddered as Mercer’s men slapped a shaped breaching charge against the hinges. Sparks showered from the frame as the first layer of steel warped inward.
"They're blowing the door!" Logan screamed.
"Brody, take Maya down into the ventilation shaft behind the server racks—it leads to the levee spillway," Cody ordered, unscrewing the wing-nuts of the trapdoor with frantic speed. "If I don't make it back up, you get her to the highway. Find a state trooper. Tell them what happened."
"No way, Cody!" Brody argued, grabbing Cody's arm. "We started this together on the side of Griffin Road! We don't leave each other behind!"
"You have to protect Maya!" Cody yelled, his eyes burning into Brody's. "That was Arthur's dying wish! Now go!"
Brody swallowed the lump in his throat, nodded once with fierce resolution, grabbed Maya’s hand, and pulled her toward the ventilation grate with Logan.

With a final heave, Cody ripped the heavy iron trapdoor open. A wall of cold, foul-smelling swamp water and hydraulic fluid surged upward, splashing over his boots. Beneath him was a narrow steel ladder descending into a dark, flooded subterranean tomb.
Cody gripped the flashlight with his teeth, drew a deep breath, and plunged down into the freezing water.
