Chapter 6 - Blood on the Harbor

The alarm siren wailed like a dying beast. Strobe lights bathed the control room in violent blood-red flashes.
One minute, forty-five seconds.
Adrian shrieked, scrambling on all fours toward the reinforced exit doors, but the magnetic locks had engaged automatically upon the core breach warning. He threw his bruised body against the steel, clawing at the frame until his fingernails cracked and bled. "Let me out! Let me out!"
"Dante! Can you override the system remotely?" I yelled into my comms, stepping over Julian Thorne's writhing body to inspect the master console.
Dante's voice crackled through static and interference. "The terminal is hardwired to an internal mainframe in the basement! I can't bypass it from the van—someone has to pull the physical cooling rods within ninety seconds, or the thermal shock wave will level three square miles!"
"I know where the cooling room is," Adrian suddenly screamed, turning around with frantic, bulging eyes. "I worked the supply lines here during our engagement! I have the security keycard for the basement!"
He pulled a scuffed, bloody keycard from his torn jacket, clutching it to his chest like a lifeline. "Trade me! Let me take the helicopter! Give me immunity, and I’ll give you the card!"
Even facing imminent death, the coward was still bargaining.
Kaelen Chen didn't waste a single breath. Before Adrian could blink, Kaelen surged forward, seized Adrian’s wrist, and twisted it until the bone snapped with a sickening pop. Adrian howled, dropping the card. Kaelen caught it in mid-air and tossed it to me without looking down.
"Leo, blow the exterior glass!" Kaelen commanded into his radio.
CRACK-BOOM.
A rocket from Leo’s launcher outside shattered the reinforced bulletproof glass of the observation window, venting the suffocating smoke out into the cold harbor air.
"Elena, take the basement!" Kaelen shouted, unhooking two high-explosive charges from his tactical belt. "I’ll handle Thorne and clear your extraction route!"
I didn't hesitate. Trusting my brothers and Kaelen was second nature now. I sprinted down the emergency maintenance stairs, vaulting three flights at a time as the klaxon counted down.
Fifty seconds.
The heat in the lower sub-levels was suffocating. Steam hissed from ruptured valves, scalding my arms as I ran. The scars across my back burned with phantom agony, but my boots never slowed. I swiped the keycard at the heavy vault door of the reactor control room.
BEEP. Access Granted.
Inside, the cooling system was glowing bright orange. The manual override lever was jammed beneath a fallen steel support girder.
Thirty seconds.
I threw my weight against the girder, muscles screaming. It wouldn't budge. Blood began to seep through the fresh bandages along my spine.
"Need a hand, little sparrow?"
Dominic and Leo appeared through the steam. Without another word, my two brothers stepped beside me. Together, with a collective roar of primal effort, we shoved the multi-ton girder aside. I grabbed the emergency cooling lever and slammed it downward with everything I had left.
A deafening hiss of liquid nitrogen flooded the conduits. The pulsing red lights flickered, dimmed, and shifted to a steady, calm green.
System Stabilized. Meltdown Aborted.
I collapsed against the cool metal floor, chest heaving, sweat dripping from my jaw. Dominic knelt beside me, his large hand cupping the back of my head, pulling me against his shoulder. "Good work, Elena. It’s over."
Above us, a sudden explosion rattled the floorboards.
We raced back up the shattered stairwell to the main deck. The Thorne mercenaries had been completely neutralized by Gabriel and Christian’s arriving tactical units.
In the center of the loading dock, under the glaring floodlights, Kaelen stood holding Julian Thorne by the collar. Nearby, Adrian Vance was pinned to the concrete beneath the boots of two Chen operatives.
Julian Thorne spit blood onto Kaelen's polished shoes. "You think... you win? My offshore accounts... my allies in Washington... they will tear the Moretti family apart..."
Christian walked up, holding a glowing tablet. "What accounts, Julian? While you were playing terrorist, my algorithms seized your shell companies in the Caymans. As of sixty seconds ago, the Thorne empire has been liquidated. You are bankrupt. Your sons have been arrested at JFK attempting to flee. You have nothing."
Julian’s eyes lost their fire, turning hollow and lifeless. He slumped forward, broken beyond repair.
Adrian looked up at me as I approached. He began to crawl toward my boots, weeping, leaving a trail of grime and blood. "Elena... please... look at what we survived together! We can rebuild! I was blinded by Vanessa, I swear! I loved you! I’ll spend my life making it up to you!"
I stopped two inches from his reaching hands.
"You never loved me, Adrian," I said, my voice echoing clearly over the quiet harbor. "You loved the idea of an obedient shadow you could beat down to make yourself feel powerful. But shadows are born from light. And when the light burns bright enough, the shadow consumes everything."
I turned to Dominic. "Hand them both over to the federal authorities. Let the world watch the Vance and Thorne trials. Every crime, every embezzlement, every drop of blood they spilled—broadcast it on international television."
Adrian wailed as the federal marshals’ sirens approached in the distance.
As the police lights painted the harbor in flashing blue and red, Kaelen walked up beside me, removing his handkerchief to gently wipe a streak of soot from my cheek.
"You fight like an empress, Elena Moretti," he murmured, his amber eyes glittering in the dark.
Before I could answer, Dante jogged over, holding a secure satellite phone. "Elena... Dominic. We just decrypted Julian Thorne’s private communications. He wasn't the top of the chain."
May you like
Dominic’s eyes narrowed. "Who was backing him?"
Dante looked directly at me. "The Hart family. Vanessa Hart’s father is the Supreme Justice of the State Appellate Court. And he just signed a secret warrant to seize the Moretti estate and arrest all of us for treason."
