Chapter 10 - The Phoenix Throne

Six months later.

The Moretti family estate had been completely restored, transformed from an armed fortress into a sanctuary of architectural elegance. The iron gates stood open, surrounded by blooming white hydrangeas and lush green lawns overlooking the ocean cliffs.

In the grand ballroom—the very room where I had once been bound and beaten—the shattered marble had been replaced with deep emerald quartzite. The walls were adorned with Renaissance masterpieces, and the high ceilings glittered with crystal chandeliers that cast warm, golden light across two hundred guests.

This was not a gathering of arrogant sycophants. Tonight, the ballroom was filled with true leaders: diplomats, charity directors, family allies, and the loyal men and women who had stood by our family through the darkest nights.

I stood on the mezzanine terrace, looking down at the celebration.

I wore a floor-length gown of midnight blue, embroidered with silver threads in the pattern of a rising phoenix. The scars across my back were now adorned with delicate, shimmering silver body paint—a mark of honor, not shame.

A soft footstep sounded behind me.

I didn't need to turn around to know who it was. The subtle scent of sandalwood and rain always gave him away.

Kaelen Chen stepped onto the terrace, holding two glasses of vintage champagne. He had traded his tactical gear for a tailored tuxedo, looking every bit the sovereign lord he was.

"A penny for your thoughts, Empress," he murmured, handing me a glass.

"I was thinking about the girl who stood in this room six months ago," I said, looking out toward the dark horizon where the ocean met the stars. "She was terrified. She thought that if she hid her strength, she could buy peace. She let herself bleed to protect a man who was already sharpening the knife."

Kaelen leaned against the stone balustrade, his amber eyes reflecting the moonlight. "And what does the woman standing here tonight think?"

I turned to face him, clinking my glass against his. "She knows that peace without power is an illusion. And that she will never kneel again."

Kaelen smiled—a genuine, rare smile that transformed his sharp, dangerous features into something breathtakingly warm. "Good. Because I would hate to have to conquer the world for a woman who refuses to rule it."

From inside the ballroom, the sound of laughter broke out.

Leo and Gabriel were arguing over the dessert table, while Christian was passionately explaining market derivatives to an amused foreign ambassador. Dante stood by the French doors, ever watchful, while Dominic—the great titan of defense—was laughing warmly as he danced with an elderly diplomat’s wife.

My family was whole. We were free.

"Elena," Kaelen spoke softly, his tone shifting from playful to deeply earnest.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the ancient jade phoenix pendant he had brought to my hospital room months ago. He stepped behind me, his fingers brushing gently against the silver-painted scars on my skin, sending a pleasant shiver down my spine. With infinite care, he fastened the jade pendant around my throat.

The cool stone rested against my collarbone.

"Your mother gave this to my house as a promise of alliance," Kaelen whispered, stepping in front of me again, his hands resting gently on my waist. "For months, I told myself I came across the ocean to fulfill my father’s honor. But the moment I saw you break your chains in that ballroom, I knew honor had nothing to do with it."

My heart quickened, beating in rhythm with the ocean waves crashing against the cliffs below. "Lord Chen... are you confessing your feelings?"

"I am surrendering, Elena," Kaelen said softly, his golden eyes filled with an intensity that took my breath away. "To you. Only to you."

He didn't pull me into an aggressive embrace; he waited, giving me the choice that had been stolen from me for so many years.

I smiled, stepped forward, and closed the distance between us.

When my lips met his, the last lingering ghosts of the past dissolved into the night air. His kiss was warm, steady, and fierce—a promise of equal partnership, built not on dominance, but on absolute respect and unyielding devotion.

When we finally parted, breathless under the canopy of stars, Dominic’s voice boomed from the ballroom doors.

"Chen! If you keep my sister out in the cold any longer, I’m sending Leo to test your reflexes!"

Kaelen chuckled, interlacing his fingers with mine. "Your brothers are remarkably protective."

"They are," I laughed, squeezing his hand. "And you’ll have to get used to it."

May you like

Together, hand in hand, we walked back into the warmth of the ballroom.

I was no longer an orphan in the shadows. I was Elena Moretti—daughter of a legendary house, sister to kings, and ruler of my own destiny. The crown had been forged in fire and blood, and it would shine forever.
