Chapter 2 - The Wrath of Five Kings

The mahogany double doors did not merely swing open; they exploded inward under hydraulic breaching rams, sending splinters of gilded wood raining down upon the polished Italian marble. The ballroom erupted in screams as women in couture gowns dove beneath banquet tables and men spilled champagne across their tailored lapels.
Through the haze of dust and gunsmoke strode five towering figures, silhouettes carved from midnight and sheer authority.
At the center stood Dominic Moretti, the undisputed head of Moretti Global Defense. His bespoke charcoal coat flowed around his broad shoulders like a shroud of death, his eyes cold steel behind tinted wire-rim glasses. Flanking his right was Christian, the ruthless financial titan whose trading desk could collapse sovereign currencies before lunch, and Dante, the notorious ghost of international intelligence. To Dominic's left walked Gabriel, the black-market supply kingpin, and Leo, the youngest—a prodigy of subterranean warfare whose knuckles were already wrapped in scarred leather.
Fifty heavily armed operatives in unmarked black tactical gear flooded the perimeter, locking down every doorway, service corridor, and balcony within ten seconds flat.
Adrian Vance froze, the whip still dangling from his limp fingers. His father, Arthur Vance, rose shakily from the VIP dais, his face pale as chalk. "What is the meaning of this intrusion? Do you know who I am? Security! Call the commissioner!"
Dominic didn't even glance at Arthur. His eyes tracked across the room until they found me. He saw the crimson ribbons soaking through the torn fabric of my dress, the blood dripping from my wrists onto the white floor.
The temperature in the ballroom plunged to subzero.
"Little sparrow," Dominic’s voice rumbled across the vast hall, low, gravelly, and terrifyingly gentle. "Who touched you?"
Leo didn't wait for my answer. He broke into a dead sprint. Before Adrian could raise his hands, Leo’s combat boot connected violently with Adrian’s sternum. The impact sounded like a car crash; Adrian flew backward through the air, crashing into the four-tiered crystal champagne tower. Crystal shivered, shattering into thousands of shards as vintage Dom Pérignon washed over Adrian’s bloodied face.
Vanessa Hart let out an ear-piercing shriek, clutching her diamond necklace. "You barbarian! Security, shoot them!"
A tactical operative stepped forward, planting the cold muzzle of a silenced rifle directly against Vanessa’s temple. Her scream choked into a pathetic whimper, her bladder failing as a puddle spread across her designer hem.
Dominic walked toward me, unbuttoning his cashmere overcoat. He draped it tenderly over my bare, bleeding shoulders, pulling the collar tight around my throat. "You hid your name for three years because you wanted a normal life, Elena. Look what their 'normal' gave you."
"I know, Dominic," I whispered, resting my head against his chest for just a fraction of a second before stepping back, eyes burning with ice. "Now strip them of everything."
Dominic turned toward Arthur and Adrian Vance. He pulled a gold-plated fountain pen from his breast pocket and tossed it onto the glass-littered floor before Arthur.
"You have five minutes to sign over Vance Industries' primary energy patents," Dominic said calmly. "Or my brother Christian liquidates your holding company before the midnight bell."
Arthur laughed nervously, trying to regain his composure. "You're bluffing! We have federal protection! You're just street trash!"
Christian stepped forward, holding up a sleek tablet. On the screen, a red digital counter was dropping rapidly. "Arthur, three minutes ago, I shorted your family’s stock across Frankfurt, London, and Tokyo. Your board members just received proof of your offshore laundering schemes. The SEC is already at your penthouse."
Arthur’s phone buzzed violently. Then his wife’s phone. Then every Vance executive’s device in the room began chiming with emergency notifications.
Arthur answered with trembling hands. When he heard his CFO’s panicked sobbing on the other end, his knees buckled, sending him crashing onto the glass shards beside his groaning son.
"Elena..." Adrian gasped from the floor, coughing up blood, looking up at me in sheer horror. "Elena, please... we’re married... you love me..."

I looked down at him, my expression devoid of warmth. "The girl who loved you died at the thirtieth strike, Adrian. Take him to the cellar."
Two tactical guards dragged Adrian away by his collar. But just as Dominic guided me toward the grand exit, a sharp red laser dot locked squarely onto my forehead.
