Chapter 5 - THE DEVIL'S BARGAIN

The subterranean VIP lounge of the Golden Czar casino smelled of expensive Cuban cigars, aged vodka, and unvarnished fear. Heavy velvet curtains muffled the sound of the roulette wheels above, creating a soundproof tomb beneath the streets of Brighton Beach.
Nikolai Petrov sat across a massive mahogany card table, his silver hair slicked back, a broad grin exposing two gold teeth. Surrounding us were a dozen Russian mercenaries armed with Kalashnikov rifles, their fingers resting lightly on the triggers. Behind me stood Marco and two of my most trusted enforcers.
"Dominic Moretti," Petrov purred, swirling a glass of amber liquor. "To what do I owe the honor of a visit from the dying king? I heard you had a little heart flutter on Fifth Avenue."
"I didn't come to reminisce about my health, Nikolai," I said evenly, placing a steel briefcase onto the table and popping the latches. Inside were bearer bonds and diamond certificates worth fifty million dollars. "I need the counter-agent for Viper-9."
Petrov's grin instantly vanished. His eyes narrowed, reflecting a genuine bewilderment that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. "Viper-9? Are you insane, Dominic? I haven't manufactured that compound in over five years. The last batch was sold to an independent buyer right here in Manhattan."
"Don't play games with me, Petrov," I growled, leaning forward, my hands gripping the edge of the table. "My woman is dying. Give me the antidote, or I’ll burn every shipping yard you own from here to Vladivostok."
Petrov chuckled, a dark, rumbling sound, but he leaned in closer, dropping his voice to a whisper. "You really don't know, do you? You pride yourself on ruling the Five Boroughs with an iron fist, yet you're blind to the viper sleeping in your own bed."
"What are you talking about?"
"Six months ago, a broker came to me asking for a lethal dose of Viper-9 and the singular prototype vial of the antidote," Petrov explained, tapping his fingers on the table. "He paid double the market price in untraceable cryptocurrency. He told me he was going to use it to orchestrate a war between our syndicates, liquidate the Moretti assets, and take control of your empire."
A dreadful chill gripped my spine. "Who was the broker?"
Petrov pointed a weathered finger directly past my shoulder. "Why don't you ask the man standing right behind you?"
I began to turn, but before I could draw my weapon, the cold steel barrel of a Glock pressed hard against the base of my skull.
May you like
"Don't move a muscle, Dominic," Marco whispered in my ear.
